Istanbul, the city which spans two continents, was the final stop on our Aegean adventures. The old city center was bustling during the holiday weekend. We experienced a vibrant atmosphere while we visited the amazing sites, including the Basilica Cisterns, Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, and we finished up with some last-minute shopping before the sun set on our incredible voyage. Our day in Cannakale was truly mind boggling…. More than 5,000 years of history have been uncovered at the ancient city of Troy. Its strategic location to gain control of the Dardanelles Strait has appealed to at least 9 civilizations, which are found in the “layers” at the site. The fabled city of the Trojan Wars featured in the works of Homer are thought to be layer 6. The names of the illustrious who lived, fought and passed through this city are impressive. We also visited the Troy Museum, which opened in 2018, and houses many of the treasures from the ongoing excavations.

The picture-perfect village of Alaçatı with its stone houses and windmills made for a leisurely morning of strolling and shopping. We tasted a sweet delicacy… cookies, made with mastica (a tree resin) and of course, we had to find out if the famous Kumru sandwiches on the special local bread lived up to the hype, (which they did), followed by some traditional Turkish tea. In the quiet village of Barbaros, we admired a wide array of quirky scarecrows.

We explored Rhodes from the varied architecture and shopping of the Old Town to the Acropolis and beautiful beaches all along the way to charming Lindos. It was a full day, but we kept energized with a seaside lunch and a local sweet treat made of sesame seeds, almonds and honey!

We ventured out from Marmaris in search of tombs, turtles and ancient tales…
Our local guide led us down the Dalyan River by boat to the ancient city of Kaunos, past its impressive tombs carved into the cliffs. We hiked through the excavated city and then met our boat on the other side for the remainder of the journey to where the river meets the Mediterranean Sea. This is where the sea turtles come to nest and then frolic between the river and the sea, much to our delight. We stopped along the way back up river for a delicious local lunch and then visited a honey producer, tasting more varieties than we could count! It was such a full day that we were the last ones back onboard!

Ephesus by day and night…. Our first experience at this fantastic site was for Azamara’s Azamazing evening, which included an after-hours private concert in the ancient Odeon. WOW! We then explored the site by day with our expert local guide, as well as a visit to the House of the Virgin Mary in the hills above, and a stop to view the remnants of the Temple of Artemis. We also learned about the art of making Turkish carpets and pottery and enjoyed a farm to table lunch. It was another unforgettable day!

It could not have been a more spectacular day spent exploring the villages on foot and sailing around Santorini on a private catamaran, admiring her from every angle!

It’s the village life for us! Our second Cretan port was filled with local experiences… We bought the famous fresh bananas in Malia, visited an olive mill, meandered through a small mountain village with a stop for Greek coffee and made some new friends, visited a monastery and chatted with a monk, and then had the most fantastic feast of Cretan delicacies at our guide’s cousin’s restaurant. The day ended with a freddo cappuccino and boat ride to the island of Spinalonga, whose complicated history includes the Venetians, Ottomans and finally ended as a l***r colony. It was an incredible day!

The first of our two Cretan ports was Chania. We explored the mountains, valleys and spectacular beaches, visited a monastery, bought some local honey and olive oil, and enjoyed a beachside seafood lunch!

Our small group boarded the beautiful Azamara Quest and set sail for charming Monemvasia on the Peloponnese coast. It’s easy to see why this small village on a giant rock was fought over many times. It was a great place to begin our Aegean adventures and for a refreshing swim in the crystal clear waters.

Our Greece and Türkiye adventures began in Athens…. We shook off the jet lag with a local food tour and then immersed ourselves in history with a visit to the Acropolis and it’s fantastic museum with our expert guide. We even found time to stimulate the economy with some retail therapy. More fun times ahead for this awesome group!
