Aerial view of what rip currents look like. We are entering the season of double red flag 🚩 🚩days. It means the water is closed bc of dangerous rip currents that will sweep you out to sea. Unnecessary drownings occur each year by tourists who either do not know or do not follow the flags. Standing on the shoreline it may not look dangerous.
If double red flags 🚩🚩are flying, do not get in the water.

If you ever caught in a rip current, do not PANIC. Swim parallel to the shore until you are out of it. Never try to swim straight back to shore as you will tire out and likely drown. As you see in the photo, going towards the waves with the white caps will get you back to shore. Stay safe!!

Once again, the iconic Pensacola Beach sign is soon going to assist us in finding our way to the world’s most beautiful beaches with white sand.

Thank you to Kevin Statham for sharing a sneak peek as the lights were being tested earlier this evening.

Designed by Plastic Arts Sign Company, the sign is being replaced after Hurricane Sally damage.

: The first leatherback nest in Escambia County in over 20 years hatched last night! πŸŽ‰

πŸŒ™ Approximately 60 leatherback hatchlings made their way to the Gulf late last night. The hatchlings were aided by a full moon and were able to make their way to the Gulf unassisted, which is a rare victory on our developed coastline. This is the only leatherback nest in northwest Florida this season and the first to successfully hatch since 2000. It proved to be a long wait for our Sea Turtle Volunteers, who have been keeping an eye on the nest over the entirety of its 78-day incubation. We cannot thank them enough for their patience and dedication to monitoring this nest.

Though sometimes seen offshore, leatherbacks are considered rare visitors to our beaches, preferring to nest along the southeastern coast of Florida. These tiny hatchlings have a long journey ahead of them, but the ones that survive to adulthood will grow to over six feet long and up to 1500 pounds, making them the largest living sea turtle.

πŸ‘£This is just the beginning of our hatching season in Escambia County. Help every hatchling make to the Gulf safely by remembering and to when visiting our beaches.

We don’t know much yet. Our very kind neighbor went over yesterday evening and took a couple of videos - these are a couple of shots I was able to pull out. The water in the back yard has receded and it’s amazing the chimenea is upright! Inside there is water. It’s hard to tell how much during the worst of the flooding. We think we see a slight water line inside of about an inch?

We will know more later.
