Eastport, Maine News & Information

From Eastport Windjammers- Eastport:

Well today turned out to be a really great day. We had both boats out for the afternoon whale watch. Captain Butch spent some time with Stumpy the Minke on the Ocean Obsession, while Captain Rob spent time with Rudolph and another Minke whale on the Pier Pressure. Tons and tons of harbor porpoise this afternoon and some harbor seals. Captain Butch and Captain Rob took a nice family out on a private whale watch this evening on the Pier Pressure and spent time with a Finback whale off East Quoddy Lighthouse and then found Rudolph and Stumpy closer to Eastport. The evening sail had even more harbor porpoise than the afternoon trip! Also found some harbor seals and bald eagles along the way.

Great local hiking trail.

SHACKFORD HEAD STATE PARK - EASTPORT, MAINE

Shackford Head State Park is a state-operated, public recreation area on Moose Island in the city of Eastport, Washington County, Maine. The 87-acre (35 ha) state park occupies a peninsula that separates Cobscook Bay and Broad Cove. The land is named for John Shackford, an American Revolutionary War soldier who once owned the headlands

The park has both inland and coastal hiking trails, including the Cony Beach Trail, Shackford Head Trail, and Schooner Trail.[4] A plaque on Cony Beach marks the spot where five Civil War–era ships were burned for salvage during the early 1900s
Trailhead

From North or South: Take US Route 1 to ME Route 190 in Perry. Travel 7 miles, passing the Passamaquoddy Indian Reservation and a causeway (part of an unfinished project designed to be the largest tidal dam project in the world, when built in the 1930s). Approaching the city of Eastport, the road bends to the left by a gas station. Take a hard right-hand turn onto Deep Cove Road, and travel 0.8 miles to the entrance of Shackford Head State Park (a gravel drive on your left just before the campus of the Maine State Marine Technology School (known locally as the "Boat School"). The main trailhead is just off the circular gravel drive to the left of the large brown sign beyond the interpretive panels.

Description

The interconnected trail system at Shackford Head State Park includes some easy walking trails and some more challenging, uneven terrain (particularly on the Ship Point and Schooner trails). Trails near the parking area provide some access for wheelchairs but the entire trail network is not handicap accessible.

Enjoy the fine overlooks but use care near high cliffs and bluffs. The best shore access is at Cony Beach (by the parking area) or from the Broad Cove Trail. Great care should be taken when exploring these beaches because of the tides that fluctuate 20 feet in a short amount of time.

The Shackford Head and Overlook Trails (1.2-mile roundtrip) provide fantastic views of Cobscook Bay and surrounding peninsulas. If you enjoy challenging terrain with additional overlooks, continue on the Ship Point Trail (an additional half-mile loop) and return to the parking lot via the Schooner Trail for a total of roughly 2 miles.

When eagles are nesting on park lands, certain trails may be temporarily closed to protect young eagle families from disturbance. Please respect signs posting trails as closed.
Other Information

The Park is often wreathed in fog that forms when warm, moist air from the mainland meets masses of cold air over the surrounding waters. Pack extra layers of clothing, be prepared for low visibility, and carry a park map when hiking.
Shackford Head State Park is not routinely staffed. Please take extra precautions when you visit as there is no ranger assistance close by. Wear sturdy footwear and be prepared for uneven terrain.

From the park's overlooks, visitors can see Campobello Island in New Brunswick, Canada, the town of Lubec, and the Eastport cargo pier on Estes Head, as well as aquaculture pens where Atlantic salmon are raised. Park trails afford great opportunities for wildlife watching as well - with warblers and hermit thrushes in the woodland areas, and bald eagles, common terns, and spotted sandpipers along the shore. Ornithologists have documented 28 different bird species nesting on the headland.
Cobscook Trails Project

The trails on Shackford Head State Park are part of a larger network of hiking trails in known as Cobscook Trails. Cobscook Trails is a cooperative project of conservation landowners and community partners that seeks to expand opportunities for nature-based recreation and tourism in eastern Washington County. The group produces "Cobscook Trails: A Guide to Walking Opportunities around Cobscook Bay and Bold Coast Region," a 55 page booklet describing walks on 19 area properties. Find more information about Cobscook Trails, including how to purchase the guidebook, visit: The Cobscook Trails Project.

Several miles of hiking trails from the parking area lead through woods to a rocky headland 173 feet above sea level, passing several pocket beaches and protected coves. Several overlooks provide spectacular views of Cobscook Bay.

SummerKeys of Lubec presents…

The Mary Potterton Memorial Concert Series

In Dedication
Mary Potterton
(1905-1993)

Mary Potterton (1905-1993) came from a musical family; Papa played the trombone, brother John, the violin and she the piano, while Oogi Wa-Wa (the cat) sang along (“Only I never would practice after your Grandpa bought the Player-Piano; that put my nose out of joint!”) Ever fascinated with the concept of SummerKeys, she helped it begin and always loved to hear everything about it. The fruits of her interest live on in this beautiful summer-place for music, and in a series of concerts offered to the community in her memory.

SummerKeys, powered by a dream and a spate of good luck, opened its doors to a sell-out crowd in the summer of 1992. Since then, “music people” (For that surely describes anyone you find there, regardless of their skill level) have been coming to enjoy their instrument in the peace and beauty of Lubec.

Our downeast community is so very blessed with this world class music venue that attracts artists from all over North America and the rest of the world. Every resident and visitor to the region should attend at least one concert every summer. Make sure you make your reservation with Eastport Windjammers.

INSTRUCTOR SPOTLIGHT: Winslow Browning, guitarist

Guitarist Winslow Browning has performed to critical acclaim from New York to Berlin and Lubec, ME to Key West, FL. He has appeared as a recitalist, chamber musician and soloist with orchestra in the United States, Canada, Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland. In New York, Mr. Browning’s appearances have included concerts at Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, Lincoln Center’s Walter Reade Theater and Alice Tully Hall, Symphony Space, Florence Gould Hall and the Brooklyn Playhouse. His radio and television appearances have included Morning pro musica on WGBH-FM in Boston and he has been a frequent guest on Around New York on WNYC-FM. In 1996 Mr. Browning won the Artists International Award and has been featured at a number of music festivals around the world including: the Long Island Guitar Festival (USA), Kühlungsborn Guitar Festival (Germany), Schloss Prössels Music Festival (Italy), Winterfest Guitar Festival (USA), and Fog Fest (Canada).

Since 1985 Mr. Browning and flutist Suzanne Gilchrest have performed together to critical acclaim in the United States and in Europe. The Browning-Gilchrest Duo can be heard on their CD recordings Serenade for Flute and Guitar and Duo Chant, available on the Prospect Classics label, and in the film score for The Holocaust Project; From Darkness to Light .

Mr. Browning is Founder and Artistic Director of Guitar Among Others, Inc.; a not-for-profit corporation; started in 1989 to promote music for guitar with other instruments. Initially begun as a concert series in Manhattan, the organization’s activities have grownto include its annual series; concert tours in Germany; and Arts-in-Education programs in Maine, New York, Delaware, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky. Attracting and developing new audiences for the guitar and for chamber music are at the forefront of the Guitar Among Others mission.

Eastport, Maine News & Information

FDR"S BELOVED COTTAGE AND ISLAND OF CAMPOBELLO

Franklin Roosevelt spent many enjoyable vacations at his summer home on Campobello Island in New Brunswick’s Bay of Fundy. Today the summer home is the centerpiece of Roosevelt Campobello International Park, and is preserved as a memorial and as a symbol of the close friendship between Canada and the United States.

FDR’s “cottage” has been preserved, and is almost exactly as it was in 1920, the summer before Franklin was stricken with polio. At your own pace, tour both floors of the 34-room memorabilia filled cottage. Guides stationed throughout the home offer interpretation and answer questions about the house, its historic furnishings, and the family. A ramp provides easy access to the first floor.

Now known as the FDR summer home, the “cottage” was built in 1897 for Mrs. Hartman Kuhn, of Boston. Mrs. Kuhn developed a fondness for Eleanor when Franklin and Eleanor summered at his mother’s cottage next door. A provision in Mrs. Kuhn’s will offered her cottage to FDR’s mother, Sara, for $5000.00. Sara purchased the furnished cottage and 5 acres of land in 1909. Sara gave the cottage to Franklin and Eleanor. The growing family spent summers in the cottage from 1909 to 1921. Franklin altered the design of the house in 1915, when he added a new wing to provide additional space for his growing family.

The cottage was comfortable, but had neither electricity nor telephone. Kerosene lamps and candles provided light. Seven fireplaces and kitchen coal and wood-fired stoves provided heat.

Running water for bathing, cooking, and cleaning came from storage tanks on the third floor of the cottage. The storage tanks were fed by gravity from a tank atop a nearby windmill. Drinking water came in large bottles by horse and cart, from a spring called Barrel Well.

Every summer, the Roosevelts brought a nurse and a governess to tutor and instruct the children, and several servants to run the cottage. Campobello residents were hired to help with the daily chores.
Because days could be foggy and evenings cool, indoor activities played an important role in the summer routine. The children played games, FDR spent time working on his stamp collection, and Eleanor knitted, wrote letters and read.

In the evenings, Eleanor regularly read aloud to the children and guests. Social activities included dancing at the hotels and occasional evening parties for the children, such as hay rides and taffy pulls.

Make sure you plan a visit this season. In the meantime check out their website for the many offerings.

Welcome to Campobello Island!

Just across the water from Eastport.

A great spot to visit while staying at Winkle Cottage

From CBS News:

FDR and Campobello

Sunrise at Campobello - it's more than the name of a famous play and film. It's truly a sight to behold.

No wonder Franklin Delano Roosevelt called Campobello his "beloved island."

For the wealthy Roosevelt family, this small Canadian island was an escape from the heat of New York summers - and the constraints of New York society.

"My sense is that, probably more than any place, he could be himself on Campobello Island, because when you are on an isolated island it is all of a sudden a very small community," said FDR's grandson, Christopher Roosevelt. "And all the members of the community are essentially the same. They're equal. There's nobody special.

"He was treated by the islanders as just a regular individual, and that in turn enabled him to relate to them as just regular people. And I think he admired them for all the things, the strengths, the resources that they had because of that relationship. And I think it brought him closer to recognizing that, you know, we're all the same."
Christopher is also vice-chairman of Roosevelt Campobello International Park.

Spread-across the nearly 3,000 acres of the family's former estate, the park is jointly funded and managed by the United States and Canada.

"The park is, we believe, the only true international park in the world," said Christopher. "It is the only park where two nations have gotten together and, under a treaty, have formed this special memorial not only to FDR but to the mutual friendship and respect between two nations that share the world's longest border."
The Roosevelts' 34-room cottage still looks as if the family had just stepped out for a quick swim. Franklin's ashtray is at the ready. And Eleanor's megaphone is there, on the porch.

Park guides Theresa Mitchell and Darlene Savage are, respectively, 6th - and 7th-generation islanders, and like so many Campobello natives, they speak of Eleanor and Franklin as if they were dear friends.

An undated photo of Franklin Delano Roosevelt at Campobello Island.

FDR LIBRARY

"He loved Campobello. He loved the cottage. He loved the people," said Savage.

And by all accounts, the feeling was mutual.

As a boy, FDR learned to sail under the tutelage of island fishermen - no small accomplishment. Here, in the Bay of Fundy, you'll find the highest tides in the world - rising and falling as much as 30 feet every six hours.

Franklin, Eleanor, and their five children enjoyed a vigorous outdoor life. They lived without electricity or a telephone. Eleanor indulged in just one high-society practice: Every day at three p.m., she served tea.

But it was a democratic affair, and children from island families were always welcome.

"She was the kind of girl, if she said, 'I'm bringing five,' make sure you're ready for ten," said Mitchell.

She described Eleanor as very social. "She enjoyed having company," she told Altschul. "She didn't love things; she loved people. She always had an open ear. I think that's what made her such a great first lady."

As for Franklin, he suffered a debilitating attack of polio in this bedroom in 1921, at age 39. There are many theories as to how he found the strength to lead the United States through the Great Depression and on to victory in the Second World War.
But ask Campobello Island Mayor Stephen Smart, and he'll tell you the answer lies right here.

"He hadn't been sedentary, he'd been outside. He'd been enjoying the world and not always from a steamer window, right?" said Smart. "Out in it, enjoying the coastline. Because if you're going to survive on an island like this, you've got to be mentally tough. And you've got to be willing to take some risks."

In 1921, FDR had left Campobello on a stretcher, uncertain of his future. He returned, 12 years later, as leader of the free world.
"I think he had such a love for the island and the people on the island that he just had to go back there," said Chris Roosevelt.
He believes that for his grandfather, Campobello always remained his "beloved island," and it's no surprise that its people welcomed him back as one of their own: "It was kind of a place where he became rejuvenated. He became fed and nourished by those relationships, and I think that's why he kept going back to Campobello."
