There is no such thing as a natural born pilot. Whatever my aptitudes or talents, becoming a proficient pilot was hard work, really a lifetime’s learning experience. For the best pilots, flying is an obsession, the one thing in life they must do continually. The best pilots fly more than the others; that’s why they’re the best. Experience is everything.

I have often been asked what I think about at the moment of take-off. Of course, no pilot sits and feels his pulse as he flies. He has to be part of the machine. If he thinks of anything but the task in hand, then trouble is probably just around the corner.

We all start somewhere! My first flying job took me to the island of Saipan in the Northern Mariana Island , As new hires we wore four bars flying Cessna 172's and Piper warrior! Sounds a little silly being called "captain" On a training aircraft doing island discovery flights. But even then we were presented with our own unique challenges while being responsible for the lives of several.
As we build experience and sharpen our skills, it's always good to reflect on where you started. Keeps you humble, keeps you hungry , keeps you motivated.
