A heads-up for weekend visitors: Hurricane Ridge Road will close temporarily to all traffic from 7 AM to 12 PM on Sunday, August 4th, for the annual Ride the Hurricane event. The road will reopen when the event has concluded. Wishing everyone a safe ride!

Important from : Know before you go! A campfire ban is in effect as of today, July 26th in and . All campfires, including charcoal, will be prohibited. This applies to anything that produces ash and includes the coastal areas of Olympic National Park.

Pressurized or bottled liquid fuel stoves, lanterns, or heating devices are permitted in campgrounds and wilderness areas if there is no flammable material present within three feet of the device. These stoves must be equipped with an on-off switch or valve capable of immediately extinguishing the flame. Extreme caution is urged with any open flame.

Hot and dry conditions are expected to continue through the rest of summer. Most of the Olympic Peninsula has received less than 1/10 of an inch of rainfall in more than 20 days.

Hot take: jumping into icy waters on a hot day is not ~always~ the best idea...

Even if we don't reach "driving with oven mitts" temperatures (our condolences, Mojave National Preserve), the next few days in the Pacific Northwest will be hot.

The gorgeous, glacially cold water in Lake Crescent can offer relief, but a quick transition from hot to cold can send your body into cold water shock. Even strong swimmers can lose control of their arms and legs within minutes. To keep your body and day afloat, always wear a life jacket while boating, paddling, and exploring on the lake!

Fireworks have their place, and it’s, well, someplace else. They're not legal in the park.

"But whyyyy?" wails the amateur munitions specialist in the group (every group has one).

Well, keeping fireworks off park lands helps prevent wildfires, especially crucial in years like this one when snowpack is much lower than usual. It also makes the park a lovely retreat during Fourth of July festivities for, say, people with PTSD and auditory sensitivities, dogs* (in places dogs are allowed, see below), and of course the wildlife whose home this is.

So please help us keep it that way ❤️ Thanks!
