Victor Wooten's virtuosic bass playing straddles the lines between jazz, bluegrass, funk, and progressive rock. Rising to prominence as a member of Grammy-winning bluegrass ensemble Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, he has collaborated with artists ranging from jazz instrumentalists Stanley Clarke and Marcus Miller to Dave Matthews and the heavy metal band Nitro. He has shown a commitment to education throughout his career by founding and teaching bass at Victor Wooten's Center for Music and Nature and the Victor Wooten/Berklee Summer Bass Workshop.
The Jingle Dress Dance originated during the 1918 influenza pandemic as a way to promote healing after an Ojibwa midewiwinini (or medicine man) had a recurring dream that instructed him how to make the dresses, what types of songs went with them, and how the dance was to be performed.
Jingle dresses are traditionally made with hundreds of rolled tobacco can lids or metal cones, which jingle as the dancer moves.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, The Jingle Dress Project has travelled to sites once occupied by Native people to promote Native culture, healing and unity. Here they are dancing at Cannon Beach on the Oregon Coast.

Native American heavy metal band Winterhawk made a name for themselves in the early 80's playing alongside acts like Johnny Winter, Y&T, and Metallica. They also used their music to help students at reservation schools across the American West. “We would go to boarding schools and do seminar classes prior to the show, and we would talk to these Indian kids from all over, different tribes, and the common thread that they were going through in their life was domestic violence, alcoholism, teen pregnancies, suicide, lack of education. The way we would get in the door at these boarding schools—and it would take some time for the faculty to grasp the idea—was [that] we used the tool of music, mainly heavy metal, because at the time, that was the music of choice. Through that key, we opened the door to access the children to get them to open up to us. And [Nik] would tell me, ‘You’ve gotta be good at your stuff. You’ve gotta practice, because when we go there, they’re going to be amazed at the way you drum and the way I play guitar. That’s what’s gonna take down the walls, and they’re gonna wanna talk to us, and that’s when we’ll get to hear their problems, because no one else is listening to them."

Best known for their song "Come and Get Your Love," Redbone was the first Native American band to reach the top 5 on Billboard's Hot 100. Their Mexican American and Native American heritage is reflected in songs like "We Were All Wounded At Wounded Knee," as well as their stage costumes and album art. #NationalAmericanIndianHeritageMonth
November is National American Indian Heritage Month! Native American music is rich and diverse, with percussion and voice being the most common instruments. In this video, the Northern Cree Singers perform "New Crow Hop" by Leroy Whitstone at the Dakota Dunes Powwow 2020.
