It with great sorror that I must announce that Margaret Roe Designs will not be at Virginia Renaissance Faire this weekend. Both I and my mother have caught a virus and, after discussing the illness ourselves and with our doctors, have determined it best not to spread the illness or risk making ourselves worse. Please accept my sincerest apologies that we will not be there, but know I look forward to seeing you during the remaining four weekends of Faire. I wish everyone at VaRF a wonderful opening weekend!

Today's picture is just a little post-period, but shows an interesting composition.

The painter, Jan Claesz, painted several portraits of a young boy shown with a miniature horse. This composition was to become increasingly popular throughout the seventeenth century. In this image, the young boy is shown in a black and silver suit, with a green belt, posing next to his miniature horse and pet dog.

Today's portrait is a unique image of the period. This unknown woman is shown wearing a beautiful white sottana (kirtle) embroidered with blue and gold leaves, under a blue overdress with gold trim and a ruched bodice and upper sleeves. She is painted with a sweet companion on his own pillow at her side.

Wednesday is National Puppy Day, to promote puppy adoption. In celebration of the day, let's look at portraits of dogs and their owners from the sixteenth century.

Today's image is of Frederico II Gonzaga, Duke of Mantua. He wears a lovely jerkin closed with bows, under a doublet with beautiful gold knotwork embroidery. His hand rests gently on his companion at his side.

In light of tomorrow's holiday, let's look at the clothing of the Irish is the sixteenth century.

Images of the Irish are few, and were most often done by artists who had never been to the island but instead used descriptions brought back from those who had. The most famous of these images are the brightly colored watercolors by Lucas de Heere.

This image shows a great range of clothing worn by four townspeople from about 1575.

Today's portrait is of Lady Thale Holgersdatter Ulfstand of Sweden. She wears a simple black gown over a simple green kirtle, and shows her wealth through several gold chains and her gold and pearl cap. These pearl caps were popular in the Nordic countries and especially appear in painted epitaphs, such as this image. You can learn more here: http://www.fashioningtheearlymodern.ac.uk/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/Epitaph-with-depiction-of-pearl-studded-cap-1582.pdf.

Our final portrait this week is of one of the Swedish princesses, probably Sophia. Unlike the previous portraits this week, she wears a fitted gown in a red diamond brocade, trimmed in bands of embroidery. The changing angle of the striped fabric shows the shape of her sleeves well. She also wears ornate jewelry and a cap that appears to be made of lace.

Today's portrait is of the Queen consort of Denmark and Norway. Like the previous two portraits, Dorothea wears a black surcoat, this time lined in fur, over a white kirtle embroidered with gold stripes embellished with pearls. She too wears several chains with a beautiful pendant at her throat, and a long, jeweled girdle. Her cap is decorated with gold embroidery and many ouches, and around her shoulders she wears a pleated scarf.

This portrait is deceptively simple looking, but the details are beautiful. Her surcoat is trimmed in a lace that looks an awful lot like that metallic "cluny" lace we've all had in out stash at one time or another. I especially like that you can see nearly all of her hanging sleeves, and thus can make out their full shape. I am also thrilled to see a veil in a color other than white.

Today's portrait is an unusual collection of garment shapes, colors and textures. I love that the breeches and doublet are in two fabrics of the same pattern by different background colors. It takes a very specific personality to handle that many different textures at once. :)

Scipione Pulzone captures his sitters in a very realistic manner. I especially love this portrait for the texture of her gown. The fabric is clearly a satin weave, with either small pinks all over or dots woven into the fabric. I tend to prefer the idea of woven dots, but what do you think?

Scipione Pulzone, sometimes called Il Gaetano after his hometown, was a painter in the mid to late sixteenth century. Most of his work was done in Rome, but he is known to have also worked in Tuscany and Naples. He is best known for his portraits of the popes and cardinals of his day.

Our last portrait by Caterina van Hemessen shows the progression of fashion in the Low Countries when compared to yesterday's portrait. This sitter wears a high-collar gown with very structured upper sleeves, contrasting well the looser, fuller lower sleeves. I especially like the detail of her bracelets, that almost appear to be square plates linked together.

This early portrait by van Hemessen shows a simple French gown of the 1540s. I love the embroidery at the neck of her nearly-invisible partlet. In addition to this embroidery at her cuffs, she appears to have an extra ruffle of the sleeve fabric, as well as several pintucks in the sleeve fabric at her wrists.
