Life comes in waves and in seasons... And for me this most recent chapter has been such a huge departure from the previous few years. Before I took maternity leave, I was coming off the heels of personally running 15 retreats for AYR in a 2 year period. From the Caribbean to Central America to all the way to Africa, Asia and Europe. 🧳🌏

It was a whirlwind and a dream come true. I started Above Yoga Retreats in 2016, ran my first retreat in 2017 and then ran a retreat a year in addition to a "real job." Just a few months before the pandemic I quit my corporate job to run retreats full-time, and, well, that was a pretty rough next 18 months of going nowhere (the business and no travel). 🚫

Then things got moving in late 2021 and demand for travel was back and retreats were selling out left and right. Jackpot! A few years go by and now I have a new hurdle - how do I attempt to have kids and not give up this business I love so much now that it's finally taking off? Especially when I've been so hell bent on doing pretty much everything for the business myself. Well almost a year into hiring help (contracting and training new retreat leaders and outsourcing some admin) and I can say that it's all gone better than I could have possibly hoped! 🖥️ ✈️

What brought all these deep thoughts on? I found my passport in a sad pile of junk in my closet yesterday... When for so long it's lived in a special spot because it needed to be at the ready almost monthly. 🛂

Believe it or not, it's been almost a year since I've used my passport... But it's only a few more months until I lead a group to Kenya for our Yoga + Safari Retreat! And then I'll be heading to the beaches of the Dominican Republic and the beautiful old town of Cartagena, Colombia next spring! 🌎➡️ 🇰🇪 ➡️ 🇩🇴 ➡️ 🇨🇴

I know it'll be hard to leave my sweet baby for the first time, but being home with her these last several months has been and will continue to be an immense privilege. Thank you all for the continued support and loyalty as AYR has morphed and changed. And to all of my retreat leaders, yoga co-teachers, and partners worldwide! I truly truly truly couldn't do it without you! 💕🙏🏼 Thank you!

As you might know, Morocco is one of our favorite retreat destinations! We've been to the beaches and to the thriving city of Marrakech but one thing you'll always get in Morocco - camels! 🇲🇦

On one of our pre-retreat Zoom calls last night, someone said they only do yoga while they are on retreat with us... And you know what? I love that!

**If you've joined us on a retreat but don't consider yourself a big "yoga person" - comment below so others know they are in good company!**

In the same way that you might only bike or swim on vacation, but not at home... yoga does not have to be your whole personality to enjoy a yoga retreat with us! It's only a small portion of the experience.

We have many guests who LOVE yoga and practice regularly and others who practice rarely, if at all, at home. All the yoga practices on retreat are completely optional anyway! Join us a few times or not at all. Your retreat, your choice.

Went into the archives to find some red, white and blue. 🇺🇲

Ironically, I truly think the most patriotic thing one can do is travel the world. Not only to gain greater perspective, but to try to be a positive ambassador for their own country. Americans don't always have the best reputation abroad (we're known for being friendly, but loud and sometimes tone deaf). 🤣 And, more importantly to remind ourselves what we love and appreciate about where we live (which can sometimes be easy to forget). But also to see first-hand how there are certainly things to be learned from other pockets of the globe.

I hope that while you're enjoying your burgers, hot dogs, flag cakes and sparklers today... Maybe tomorrow you remember there's a lot more to see in the world - and the time to explore it is now! 🌭 🦅🌎 🎇 🍔

This past Friday was International Day of Yoga. So consider this my better late than never post. 🤷🏼‍♀️🤣

Just taught Sunday morning Gentle Flow and being back on the teaching mat more regularly after my maternity leave feels so good. 💞

I can't wait to be back teaching yoga on our retreats, as there's no place I feel more like myself and one with the world. 🌍

I've been teaching since 2015 and taking my teacher training led to what is now 25+ yoga retreats across the globe. You never know what one little step will lead to. ❤️🧘🏼‍♀️

Wow! The sun has set on our 𝟮𝟱𝘁𝗵 𝗔𝗯𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝗴𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁!! 🤯 And 21 of those retreats in just the last 3 years. As I type this, it still seems unbelievable...

And there's no better one for this epic milestone than our Yoga + Safari Conservation Retreat in Kenya. What an incredible place, hosted by some of the best humans on earth. We are so lucky and grateful to all of our partners there. 🇰🇪♥️🌄🦒

Thank you to our incredible leader Tom and co-teachers Margo and Cassie. We all met in our advanced yoga teacher continuing education 300 hour program with and now we've traveled the world together from Europe to Asia to the Caribbean and now Africa. It's hard to believe how chance encounters can lead to all this!!

And for me, it's even crazier to think I've been at home with a 2 month old while a whole crew of other people have come together to make this happen. I've watched it unfold from home just like the rest of you. 🥰 My heart is full. Grateful doesn't begin to cover it.

Incredible first 24 hours on our 2nd Yoga + Safari Conservation Retreat in Kenya!

Great sightings of elephants, lions, giraffes and more! When you add in yoga, breakfast on the plains and drinks out in the wild at sunset... It just doesn't get much better than that.

I just recently stumbled across this photo of me on the first ever Above Yoga Retreat in Mexico way back in October 2017. 🏖️

This first retreat I had 12 guests but it took me close to a year to get them booked, several people cancelled (I had no cancellation policy) and I barely broke even. My website was one page (and not a good looking one at that). 😳

Luckily I am perennially stubborn, so I evolved and kept pushing forward. If you had told that girl that she'd be about to send off a group for the 25th AY Retreat, she would have never believed you!

Planning a trip to Europe this summer? Good news! The new European Union’s travel authorization system requirements have been postponed until 2025, so there are no extra steps for you to take if you have a U.S. passport.

The last several years the E.U. has been working on.a new system (like a visa in a lot of ways, but not one) called ETIAS or the European Travel Information and Authorization System. You'd need to apply before travel to the E.U. and then, if approved, your access is good for a few years before you need to reapply again.

The U.S. requires something similar of most travelers to get into the States. We'll keep you updated as the new system finally rolls out - in theory it'll be next year, but it's starting to feel like the "Real ID" requirements for U.S. airports, they keep saying it's about to be official and then moving the date! 🤣🛂

We are coming up on our next Yoga + Safari Conservation Retreat in Kenya in just two months! AND because this experience has been so popular we have a second one this year in early December. A safari is a fully-inclusive experience. It's not just your daily safari game drives to see the animals with your expert guides. It's also incredible food, drinks and hospitality by our retreat venue staff. Someone to deliver your coffee to your room in the morning before yoga, and someone to bring you a local Tusker beer around the campfire after dinner.

WOW! In just 3 minutes, our 35 person yacht for Croatia next year was filled to capacity (during the early access period for email subscribers last night)!! I thought the excitement and stress was going to send me into labor a week early. 🤣🤯

If you had told me this would be a thing that could happen when I started this business in 2016/2017. You know, back when I could go MONTHS between selling spots, I would have laughed in your face and never ever believed it. I still can't believe it now honestly. It's humbling, exciting and a little bit overwhelming at times.

I know there are lots of happy people who got in (yay! And thank you for sharing your excitement with me directly)! and lots of less happy people who did not (I totally get it) ❤️

For those who did not (especially those of you who are loyal past retreat guests), I fully understand your disappointment and frustration. If you reached out about it, I think I've been able to respond to almost all of you individually and will continue to do so. However, I wanted to explain that my booking platform has built-in mechanisms to not oversell an event. So even if you have something in your cart for a moment, if dozens of other people do too, and manage to check out a few moments faster, it will not let you proceed. This is so I don't end up in an oversold situation, which would have certainly been worse.

Thank you to the many of you who seemed to have the mentality that it is what it is and go with the flow attitude on not getting in. 🤗

I will be opening several more incredible retreats for the summer / fall of 2025 (Safari in Kenya, Yoga + Wine in Portugal and Luxury Retreat to Marrakech, Morocco). Most of those will open in June / July when I'm back from maternity leave. As of now, I am not planning on adding an additional Croatia retreat next year, but I will start to run this retreat at least once a year moving forward as long as there is demand, instead of every other year as I have in the past. 🛳️🌴

Exactly five years ago I was on my first-ever visit to Southeast Asia, a scouting trip that would ultimately change my life. After 12 days in Cambodia and Vietnam, I was in love. I started planning the first retreat to Siem Reap on the plane flight home. It's when I met my friend and guide we will partner with today (Young) and when I toured lots of hotels and restaurant venues.

Even just a decade ago I would have said that sort of long-distance travel seemed out of reach. Something other people did, but not me. It seemed too hard to figure out. And now I'm making a living taking people to those same types of destinations. Pretty amazing. Sometimes you do the thing, before you even know where that thing will lead.

We are guilty of sometimes posting images of the most exciting moments and excursions on retreat.

But often what people need (and enjoy) the most are the quiet moments that look ordinary but feel extraordinary... The yin to the yang of their busy, hectic lives at home.

Rooftop coffee at sunrise. Peaceful yoga practices. Floating in the pool with a good book. A mid day nap just because.

Happy International Women's Day! If you didn't know... Above Yoga Retreats is a woman-owned and operated business.

As you might guess, 80% of our guests are women, as are probably 90% of our yoga co-teachers and many of our local friends + partners across the world. Through this business I've met and built relationships with incredible, strong women across 5 continents, of many backgrounds, cultures and religions. And they are all so impressive and inspiring. ❤️

So I'm sending a huge hug to ALL the amazing women in the world who show up, support other women, work hard, and to those who have started business, built communities and nurtured relationships... Here's to all the things women do and contribute every day to make our world a better place.

And as our queen Beyoncé says "who run the world?" 🌍

What are these guests looking at? 👀

I'm desperately trying to resist a pun about guests having a "whale of a good time," but it's just too easy! 🐳 Our private whale watching excursion is usually a favorite activity of our Pacific Mexico retreat.

Humpback whales migrate from Alaska and parts of Canada approx. 4,000 miles every year to this part of the world to have their babies in the warmer water (and here, specifically in the protected Bay of Banderas that Puerto Vallarta overlooks). They also can mate for the next year, before they swim back to the colder waters up north to stock up on food for several months. It's an incredible thing to witness.

If you ever get the chance to travel to the Pacific Ocean side of Mexico between December - March, you can see these beauties for yourself!

Top tip: go with a provider who is concerned about conservation, stays a safe distance away whenever possible and knows their stuff - we love ❤️🇲🇽

Guests have been exploring the town's boardwalk and unique architecture, enjoying a guided excursion to the world famous Vallarta Botanical Gardens, had several curated local meals and lots and lots of beach and pool time! 🏖️

We don't call it the "Yoga in Paradise Retreat" for nothing. 😉

You might recognize some Above Yoga Retreat alumni in that first pic... Erin, Sarah, Colleen, and our leader, Regan. They all came as solo travelers, but between them, they've been on our retreats to: South of France, Panama, Cambodia, Croatia, the Dominican Republic and Morocco!

This photo is from the rooftop of our Pacific Mexico retreat villa. It was taken June 2021, the day before guests arrived. The first retreat to take place after COVID had derailed so much of all of our lives. There was so much stress leading up, and yet so much joy that we were finally back to traveling in small ways after so many cancelled and delayed retreats.

This was only the 5th retreat I'd run for AYR, and now, believe it or not, there have been 18 more retreats since then! 😮 I ran the first 20 as a one woman show outside my yoga co-teachers and local partners. But this week's retreat back in Puerto Vallarta will be the 4th trip run by someone else, while I'm back at home (and 35 weeks pregnant).

Just like during COVID, this new period of transition has forced me to let go of a lot of control. I still plan, plot, organize and strategize, but ultimately I have to trust the universe and my amazing team. In reality it was so much harder to do in theory than it has been in practice. It's been a different kind of joy to watch things unfold from afar and stay more in the background once everyone is on-site.

A little reminder that change and challenges can be good, even when you didn't have too much choice in the matter or the timing of it. 💗🌴☀️

Ending our group's epic week in Panamá with a bang! 🔥

After a sunset hike and yoga overlooking the bay (with some wine and cheese after) our little retreat family enjoyed a fabulous farewell dinner and a celebration of local culture and cuisine! 🇵🇦💃🏼🌄

The best part of any week on retreat is witnessing the group change from strangers into close friends and a close-knit retreat family. From casually greeting each other over morning coffee the first day to belly laughing over dinner the final few nights, it's a transformation that reminds us every time that there's no better way to make friends for life than to travel to the unknown with a stranger.

All of the world's best coffee comes from this imaginary loop around the globe's midsection. 🌎 The 3 main regions of what's also called the "Bean Belt" are: Latin America, Africa and Asia Pacific. They land alongside the equator between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. 🫘

Why? It's due to the year-round warm temperatures and fertile soil. We have several retreats within the Coffee Belt - like Panama, Colombia, Mexico and Kenya! Guess we like warm temps as much as the beans!

Panamá is also famed for one of the world's most expensive coffees - the Geisha. Some people say it tastes more like a combination of tea and coffee. 🍵
