This week MWI has been saddened by the loss of the great David Sanborn. Below, Katherine McVicker shares her thoughts on the incredible man she worked with for many years.

"David was a lovely man. I was honored to work with him internationally for many years. Amazing talent, generous spirit, humble and self-deprecating about his talent. Also a very funny guy who always made me laugh. A big loss to our musician community. An inspiration to musicians everywhere in all genres of music. He will be hugely missed. Rest in peace dear David."

OUT TODAY | Nobel Prize-winning author Kazuo Ishiguro's published collection of lyrics written for Stacey Kent, "The Summer We Crossed Europe in the Rain." In a collaborative work, the book collects song lyrics Ishiguro has written since 2007 for Stacey Kent, which were set to music by Jim Tomlinson. The collection also features illustrations from Italian artist Bianca Bagnarelli.

Last week at one of Mexico City’s most important jazz clubs, Parker & Lenox, MWI’s director Katherine McVicker and team members Matt De León and Pablo Solís participated in a panel discussion about “Anyone Can Book A Gig” (ACBAG), MWI’s comprehensive course and book for independent artists seeking to build career sustainability through live performance. During the panel, they shared their vast experience on various topics, including international touring, asset management, strategies for securing higher-paying gigs, and more. The MWI team visited Mexico City to be part of the second edition of Festival M jazz, a new festival which is looking to enhance the jazz scene in Mexico. The trip was helpful to meet with other jazz presenters, start creating a network with Mexican professionals, as well as to enjoy all the food and the culture that this country has to offer!

Music Works International has proudly presented Richard Bona (2023) and Chief Adjuah CHRISTIAN SCOTT QUINTET (2024) as part of M JAZZ, and we look forward to continuing the collaborations in the future.

We also made the most of the opportunity to see some great shows while in the area. You’d never be able to tell that some of us were meeting face to face for the first time.
