On the evening of April 2nd we arrived in the lovely seaside city of Hualien. Known for its night market, this city boasts of one of the best and largest food markets in the world. There was music, art, families, and pets being pushed in strollers, too!

On our 4th day in Taiwan we visited Taroko Gorge National Park. This is a hiker’s paradise and as significant as our Grand Canyon. A river runs through a steep gorge surrounding by mountains. We explored the gorge on footpaths carved through mountains and suspension bridges. Our last moments of the day before the park closed on April 2nd was spent in the presence of momma Macqaque and her babies- a rare subspecies only found in this park. We were so very grateful for our opportunity. (Note: The park closed on April 3rd after the earthquake as it sustained significant damage)

On our last night in Taipei we visited Long Shan Temple. It was a stunning, peaceful place- we liked it so much we went back for pictures after dinner to see it illuminated.

On our third day in Taiwan, we were warmly welcomed at New Taipei Municial Jinhe High School. Our students and teachers were invited for a full day of events: a welcome assembly, gift exchanges, art projects, classroom observation and participation and an afternoon of track and field sports. At the end of the school day, we all went shrimp fishing with our new friends. The best part of traveling with students is how quickly they can make friends and how good they are at staying in touch. We know lifelong friends were made today and this summer will bring more visitor exchanges to Taiwan and the USA.

Easter Sunday in Taiwan was really special. We attended mass at the Jesuit church in Taipei, and then headed he the seaside village of Jiufen. Known for its ancient tea houses, temples, and amazing food stalls, the students enjoyed the afternoon wandering the narrow alleys, and tasting all the treats!

In April we traveled to Taiwan with a group of students studying Chinese and their teachers. I promised not to post anything until we safely returned home- so these posts are long overdue. To our friends who have yet to travel to Taiwan- Go! Don’t wait! Taiwan is like a warm hug. It is a magical place.

Look who’s back! Our favorite stopover guests have started to return 🧡 Puffins spend the winter at sea, then head to Iceland in spring to nest at their regular breeding grounds 🐣 The first puffins were spotted a few days ago in Iceland’s north and east.
