According to the west London airport, 81.5 million passengers travelled through its terminals in the year to the end of May, up from 71.6 million during the previous year.

Double-digit year-on-year percentage growth in passengers was recorded for routes connecting Heathrow with other parts of the UK and Europe, North America and the Asia/Pacific region.

The airport also had its busiest-ever May, with 7.2 million passengers compared with 6.7 million in the same month last year.

Last year, the aviation regulator found Heathrow failed to meet minimum standards for disabled passengers over the previous 12 months.

Aberdeen International Airport is now equipped with the latest Next Generation Security Checkpoint (NGSC) scanners. This means passengers at the airport no longer need to remove laptops or liquids when passing through terminal security.

However, the Department for Transport has temporarily reintroduced restrictions on carrying liquids over 100ml in hand luggage at some regional airports in the UK, including Aberdeen.

The change applied from 00:01 BST on Sunday, 9 June 2024 and affects passengers at Newcastle, Leeds Bradford, London City, Aberdeen, Southend and Teesside airports.

All these airports have NGSC in operation, which allowed them to scrap the rule. The hi-tech scanners create a 3D image of what is inside passengers’ bags.

Bristol Airport was scheduled to scrap the 100ml limit on liquids being allowed in carry-on baggage from 14 June. However, that will now be delayed.

The 100ml rule was introduced in 2006 after a foiled terror plot to blow up planes flying from London to the US with homemade liquid bombs.

The Department for Transport said reintroducing restrictions would enable further improvements to the new checkpoint systems and was not in response to a specific threat.

British Airways has moved its departures from Terminal 5 to Terminal 3 at Chicago O'Hare International Airport to offer its eligible customers access to American Airlines lounges and improved connections with its transatlantic partner.

In addition, BA introduced a third daily nonstop frequency between London and Chicago. The flights are operating on its state-of-the-art Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft.

The terminal move coincided with British Airways' 70th anniversary of flying to Chicago, the Windy City.

It followed Aer Lingus’ recent switch to Terminal 3 and means that all flights by IAG carriers BA, Iberia and Aer Lingus now depart from T3, as well as those of Oneworld partners, including American Airlines and Japan Airlines.

Virgin Atlantic has partnered with Sapling Spirits to launch eco-friendly 5 ml aluminium vodka bottles onboard both economy and premium cabins.
Founded in 2018, London-based brand Sapling Spirits is regarded as climate-positive due to its sustainable operations.

Sapling Spirits is a Certified B Corporation that uses local ingredients to cut transport emissions and plants a tree for every bottle sold. It has the aim of planting 1 million trees by 2027. Each bottle features a unique code which tells buyers what tree was planted where and more information on the planting project.

Virgin Atlantic will be the first airline to fly the miniatures, which will reduce its glass and plastic waste.
Sapling’s Raspberry & Hibiscus Vodka, produced using wonky raspberries, has been served as a cocktail in the Upper Class since 2023.

Additionally, the airline has a target of planting over 20,000 trees throughout its year-long partnership with the British spirits brand.

easyJet will expand its UK network by opening a three 186-seat A320neo aircraft base at London Southend next March, creating around 130 direct jobs for pilots and crew in the UK and supporting many more indirect jobs.

The announcement signals the multinational low-cost airline's continued expansion in the UK, having launched a base at International Airport in March as part of its strategy to take advantage of key growth opportunities across its network.

56% of all easyJet passengers fly to and from airports. The airline is set to operate more UK flying this year with over 57 million seats – a 10% increase versus last year – and has launched 70 new routes from the UK, fuelled by strong consumer demand for easyJet’s flights and holidays.

The airline already serves international routes from London Southend – which will be its 10th base in the UK – to renowned beach and city destinations Amsterdam, Geneva, Faro, Palma de Mallorca, Malaga and Paris Charles de Gaulle and has flown over seven million customers from London Southend since operations began in 2012.

On 1 December 2024, British Airways will launch its first-ever flight to Tromsø, Norway. It will use A320neo aircraft.

Hence, Tromsø will become the airline’s most northernly destination globally and is available for customers to book.

Tromsø is one of the world-renowned places to see the aurora borealis, thanks to its central position in the northern lights’ oval.

Besides, with average winter temperatures ranging from 0°C to -5°C, the destination’s abundant snowfall makes it suitable for winter activities, including skiing, mountaineering and whale watching.

BA is allowing passengers to take skiing or snowboarding equipment as part of their checked baggage so long as the bag is within 190 x 75 x 65cm.

The flag carrier will operate a twice-weekly (Thursday and Sunday) service from London Heathrow (LHR) between 1 December 2024 and 27 March 2025.

🧳 Operating on Thursdays, flight BA612 will depart LHR at 08:25 and arrive at Tromsø Airport (TOS) at 13:00. Return flight BA613 will depart TOS at 14:00 and arrive at LHR at 16:45.

🧳 Operating on Sundays, flight BA612 will depart LHR at 08:15 and arrive at TOS at 12:50. Return flight BA613 will depart TOS at 13:40 and arrive at LHR at 16:25.

With a second daily connection between London and Mumbai, Virgin Atlantic announced its fifth flight to India.

The new flight will complement its double daily services to Delhi, as well as the daily Bengaluru flights.

Beginning 27 October 2024 and already on sale, the second daily Mumbai services will operate on Virgin's state-of-the-art Airbus A350-1000, offering Upper Class, Premium and Economy Delight, Classic and Light cabins as well as the airline's signature Upper Class social space.

The announcement came days after the airline’s maiden flight between Bengaluru and London on March 31.

From 2025, the airline will offer more than one million seats to India – a 350% increase in capacity since 2019.

Next year marks 25 years of Virgin Atlantic in India during which it would have grown from zero seats to 1 million seats.

International Airlines Group (IAG), which owns British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia and Vueling, said its operating profit for the first three months of 2024 was €68m (£58.5m) – above expectations and up from €9m (£7.7m) during the same period in 2023.

The company said earnings had soared thanks to strong demand, particularly over the Easter holidays. Its airlines had reported a noticeable uptick in ticket sales for flights between major European cities, especially for leisure trips. IAG also mentioned fuel costs had dropped almost 5% – compared to the same period last year.

According to first-quarter figures, total revenues also increased to €6.4bn (£5.5bn), up from €5.9bn (£5.1bn) last year.

IAG's profits are in contrast to its European competitors and Air France-KLM, which both reported lower-than-expected first-quarter results.

Air Passenger Duty (APD) is the tax you must pay when travelling from most airports in the UK.

APD is calculated based on which class you’re flying with and the distance you’re flying, categorised into the following four separate groups:

👉 UK domestic flights
👉 Band A: Destinations abroad whose capital city is 2,000 miles or less from London. This covers all of Europe and parts of North Africa
👉 Band B: Destinations whose capital city is 2,001-5,500 miles from London
👉 Band C: Destinations whose capital city is over 5,500 miles from London

From April 1 2024, APD on domestic flights has gone up from £6.50 to £7 for reduced rate (economy), £13 to £14 for standard (premium economy) and remain at £78 for higher (business or first class).

The increases in international flights are (reduced, standard or higher rates):

👉 Band A: £13, £26 or £78
👉 Band B: £88, £194 or £581
👉 Band C: £92, £202 or £607

If a passenger misses their flight, they can claim APD back by applying for a refund through the airline.

The following are exempt from paying the duty:
👉 Under 16 and travelling in the basic economy
👉 Under two years old travelling in business class
👉 A pilot or a member of the cabin crew on duty

You’re also free to not pay if you fly into the UK and get a connecting flight out within 24 hours, as long as they’re on the same ticket.

In addition to cigarette lighters — the most-confiscated item by far, 22 pairs of scissors, five multi-tools, four corkscrews, two hacksaws and two packs of darts were among almost 400 items seized in one morning.

Passengers are permitted to carry one cigarette lighter with them, so long as it fits into a clear resealable plastic bag and contains under 100ml of liquid – but bringing through multiple lighters is not allowed, which leads to many passengers having to turn them in.

Eight toy guns were confiscated throughout a single morning – anything that is designed to resemble a firearm or could be disguised as one cannot be carried in hand luggage.

Several liquid items over 100ml were also seized – including 12 cans of deodorant, two large soft drinks bottles, a bottle of shower gel and a 1L bottle of vodka.

A hammer and two small blow torches often used by chefs are among the other items that failed to make the cut.

05/02/2024

Passports in the UK have seen the second jump in cost in 14 months – rising by 7% to £88.50 for an adult online application. This rise follows a 9% price hike to £82.50 in February 2023.

Now, a child’s passport costs £57.50, up from £53.50 for an online application.

Before last year's increase, passport fees had not changed for five years as a standard adult online application cost £75.50.

The Home Office said the fee rise would help improve services as it did not profit from the applications.

There is an even higher increase for those applying for the travel documents via a paper form sent in by post.
A postal application for an adult passport is now £100 (up from £93), with an increase to £69 from £64 for a child.

Costs are even higher if you apply from overseas or require a passport urgently. However, passports are gratis for people born on or before 2 September 1929.

If we compare, a Spanish passport application costs £25, while in Germany, it’s £60. The UK passport is among the most expensive in Europe, with only Italy, Denmark and Switzerland charging more.

Many airlines, including Lufthansa, Air India and Vistara, have started avoiding overflying Iranian airspace due to ongoing tension between Iran and Israel.

Passengers flying time to and from the UK and Europe to India will now increase by anywhere up to an hour, likely sending airfares up north too.

Some Emirates and Flydubai flights flying over Iran early on Friday, 19 April, made sudden sharp turns away from the airspace, according to flight paths shown on the tracking website Flightradar24.

Air India flight 161 on Saturday, 13 April, which took off from Delhi for London, didn't overfly Iran or follow its usual India-Pakistan-Iran-Turkey-Black Sea route to Europe but took an alternate northern route.

All UK airports were originally told to introduce cutting-edge systems into their security checkpoints by 2022 before the deadline was moved to 1 June 2024.

The high-tech security scanners mean greater convenience for travellers – as people will no longer need to take items out of their bags – and enhanced passenger safety, as security staff will have more detailed images of what people are carrying.

The limit on liquids is also being increased from 100ml to two litres.

The scanners use CT X-ray technology to provide 3D images so items can be left inside bags, and the new liquid limits will be permitted.

London Gatwick, Heathrow, Cardiff and Manchester airports have applied for extensions as they need more time to finish installing the new equipment across all their lanes, meaning passengers may have to continue removing liquids and laptops from hand luggage until June 2025.

Some smaller airports like Teeside, London City and Birmingham have managed to install new security screening technology.

A British Airways plane with 121 passengers on board and a Virgin Atlantic Boeing 787-9 clipped each other at Heathrow Airport, causing minor damage to both aircraft.

The latter airline said in a statement that its Boeing 787-9, which was empty after completing a flight, was in the process of being towed to another location within Terminal 3 of the airfield when the incident occurred.

There were no injuries or delays in the incident. Emergency services attended the scene as a precautionary measure.

The British Airways flight passengers were scheduled to depart for Accra, Ghana, at 12:40 BST. The airline said it provided an alternative aircraft for them, which was rescheduled to take off at 18:00.

The announcement comes after Virgin Atlantic’s recent direct flights between London and Bengaluru, which commenced on March 31, with the inaugural flight touching down in the centre of India's high-tech industry on April 1.

Virgin Atlantic considers India, with over 24 years of operation in it, as its third-largest market, just behind North America and the Caribbean.

Presently, the airline operates two daily flights between London and Delhi, along with single daily flights to Mumbai and Bengaluru.

The announced additional daily direct flights connecting London to Mumbai will commence its operation in October 2024.

The thrice-weekly flights of 9 hours and 50 minutes will depart Gatwick at 1200 on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays, arriving at Harry Reid International Airport at 1440, with the return leg leaving Las Vegas at 1645 and flying back to London at 1035 the following day.

The London Zoo welcomed a newborn western lowland gorilla, who has joined the zoo’s endangered species breeding programme and was born to mum Effie.

This is the second critically endangered gorilla that has been born at London Zoo, less than a month after the arrival of Mother Mjukuu's baby.

Both babies have been fathered by Kiburi, the 19-year-old silverback who arrived at London Zoo from Tenerife in November 2022 as part of the conservation breeding programme to preserve a genetically diverse and healthy population of the gorilla subspecies.

Due to poaching and disease, gorillas' wild numbers have declined by more than 60 per cent in the last 25 years.

British Airways is looking to invest in every part of its business as 600+ modernisation initiatives are being rolled out as part of its £7bn transformation plan.

The latest plans include a new website, mobile app, free onboard messaging, new short-haul seats and a new First suite.

For improving its digital user experience with a new website and mobile app offering deeper personalisation, the new ba.com browser is already in BETA testing with platforms that offer a range of new services, including empowering customers to self-serve if they wish, taking control of and making changes to their journeys online, rather than having to call one of the airline’s customer care centres to alter their plans.

The airline is investing £750m in its IT infrastructure to move 700 systems and thousands of servers to the cloud by early next year.

To drive improvements from bookings to baggage handling and revolutionise its operation, speed up departures and respond to disruption, the airline is investing £100m in machine learning, automation and AI across its operation.

Innovative new tools are helping to predict delays (prompting pre-emptive action to reduce disruption) and analyse real-time weather, aircraft capacity and customer connections data to help teams make better decisions.

British Airways is also creating around 350 new roles at to improve customer experience at its home and hub airport, besides investing in new equipment, such as baggage tugs and towing vehicles.

As updated in June last year, Virgin Atlantic is scheduled to launch its London-Bengaluru flight, its fourth daily service to India. Initially planned for March 31, 2024, but now the launch will happen on April 4, 2024.

Now, Air India is poised to join Virgin Atlantic and British Airways—the only carrier currently offering non-stop service on the route. Air India can begin operations between London’s Gatwick (LGW) airport and Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) during or after April.
