If so, registration is now open for the eight (8) 2024 foundational workshops for “Making Your Business & Community a Destination”! This workshop series is conducted by Jon Schallert of The Schallert Group. Jon’s 14-step Destination Strategy was developed after interviewing over 10,000 business owners in 600 communities. These high energy, day long workshops are being held across the state. You may choose whichever location is more convenient for you.

This 2024 workshop series will cover foundational information; the 2025 workshop series will provide advanced information, as well as highlight communities who have put what they learned into action. Businesses who attend both sessions and successfully implement Jon’s criteria will be awarded the designation of “Certified NC Destination Business”!

Funding for these workshops was secured through a State Outdoor Recreation, Travel & Tourism Grant from the US Economic Development Administration (EDA) to expand the NC Main to Main website, therefore the workshop is free to qualified registrants in the 72 designated NC Main Street communities. We’ve declared it North Carolina State Historic Preservation Office (NC HPO) show and tell week, where NC HPO staff members show you some of their favorite photos from the HPO collection and tell you why!

Kelly Lally Molloy, Preservation Specialist, has been reviewing survey files from Person County. One of her favorite images from this project documents the Baynes Store—a building that was photographed by Dorothea Lange, the WPA photographer, back in the 1930s. Kelly loves that it is still standing! The Person County survey, undertaken by consultants Heather Slane and Cheri Szcodronski, is one of seven countywide architectural survey projects taking place in North Carolina right now that are funded with money granted to the state from the Emergency Supplemental Historic Preservation Fund (ESHPF).
