I’ll never forget when the news broke that President Trump was going to cut development and humanitarian assistance to Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador — as a way to punish the governments of those countries for not stopping their citizens from leaving their homes and migrating to the United States.

I was in Guatemala that day in 2019, filming a public television special about extreme poverty and smart development (“Hunger and Hope: Lessons from Ethiopia and Guatemala”), and the news was heartbreaking.

It was also, frankly, baffling. If your motivation is to slow migration to the US, then development, jobs, and hope south of the border are the best medicine — and US aid is a great and practical investment.

The people I’ve met in Latin American countries love their homes. They want to work hard, feed their families, and join the market economy to enjoy the fruits of their labor. If they make the treacherous trip to the US, it is only out of desperation. Hurting the people who live in these places only slows development, and the result is more refugees at our border...not fewer.

If you’re worried about our southern border, smart aid is a smart investment — and another vote for Trump (who, under Project 2025, will gut such aid) is not the answer.

Tonight on Monday Night Travel: Edinburgh is Scotland's historical, cultural, and political capital all wrapped up in one!

Join Rick Steves guide Charlie Rawson for a tour of the city's most thrilling sights. After a ramble through hilltop Edinburgh Castle, we descend to the Old Town's main drag — the Royal Mile — for a look back at medieval Edinburgh. At the National Museum, we meet the legendary figures of Scottish independence, then stow away on the late queen's royal yacht, Brittania. We cap our visit with a literary pub crawl and a wee dram. Sláinte!

Monday Night Travel is our live, weekly virtual show. It's free to attend, but you need to register at https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_75072NwZTJSiANoyAs98IQ #/registration
