The Nathaniel Hawthorne Birthplace, built in 1750 and occupied by Hawthorne’s immediate family from 1801-1808, recalls the early days of Hawthorne’s life.

Hawthorne lived in this house from his birth until after his father died at seas when he was four, after which his family moved in with relatives. In 1958, the house was moved from nearby Union Street to its present location on the House of the Seven Gables National Historic District campus. Hawthorne’s Birthplace rests just across from the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, the house made famous as the setting for one of his most enduring works, The House of the Seven Gables.

The House of the Seven Gables is raising funds to create a new exhibit in the Nathaniel Hawthorne Birthplace that will inspire new generations of readers to discover this classic American author. The exhibit will feature original Hawthorne artifacts from our collections and archives, as well as interactive multimedia experiences. We will explore how Hawthorne’s hometown of Salem influenced his work; how he helped shape American horror and science fiction writing; and how his themes still resonate in the present day.

Attending Hawthorne’s Halloween Bash is just one way you can bring this project to life! Proceeds of the event benefit the re-imagining of the Nathaniel Hawthorne Birthplace. To learn more and purchase tickets, visit 7Gables.org/hawthornes-halloween-bash

Spooky season has arrived! 🎃🍂 Planning an October visit to The Gables? Here are a few tips.

• Advanced tickets are REQUIRED. Due to the high volume of visitors, tickets are non-refundable and cannot be rescheduled. Visit 7Gables.org/tickets to purchase.

On Tuesday, September 17, we celebrated 37 community members who took their pledge of allegiance and became US citizens!

Each year, The House of the Seven Gables Settlement Association, in collaboration with USCIS, hosts a Naturalization Ceremony for new Americans from the region. The event is a culmination of the journeys and many roads traveled by these hopeful individuals to officially be named Americans.

Congratulations to our new citizens, and thank you to all involved in the ceremony!

September 4-6, join us for Enduring Hawthorne: Ekphrastic Writing at The House of the Seven Gables!

Salem Literary Festival is excited to introduce a new and exciting adaptation of Enduring Hawthorne. This year we are inviting all of our writers to visit The House of the Seven Gables, the famous home that inspired Nathaniel Hawthorne to pen the novel of the same name. We hope you will become equally inspired to write, be it a poem, short story, or song! Over the course of two nights, The Gables will welcome Lit Fest attendees into the mansion to walk around each room, ask questions, and soak up the history, literature, and romance within.

🗓️ Enduring Hawthorne Mansion Viewing nights are September 4 and 5 at 6:30 P.M., and registration is required. Visit 7Gables.org.events to learn more and register.

Once you have visited The Gables, we hope you feel moved to create a literary piece of your own that you would like to share with your colleagues and the public. On Friday, September 6, we will be hosting an evening for presenting these works, culminating in a performance of Hawthorne’s “Young Goodman Brown,” adapted to folksong by local musician, Dan Blakeslee, and accompanied by a crankie created by local artist, Ben Wickey.

🗓️ Enduring Hawthorne Presentation night will take place Friday, September 6 at 6:00 P.M. Registration is requested. Visit 7Gables.org.events to learn more and register.
