New federal regulations are now requiring healthcare providers to request information from patients regarding Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) at the time of admission to the hospital or clinic. SDoH are non-medical factors that could influence patient outcomes and overall well-being.

So the next time you visit Salina Regional Orthopedic Clinic you may be asked a series of questions that you have never been asked before and you may wonder why we are asking you these questions such as whether you can afford your medication, do you feel safe at home, do you have adequate housing and transportation to and from doctor’s appointments and whether you have any food insecurities. All patients will be asked the same questions. Patients may also receive an email from the patient portal to complete a questionnaire online prior to visits with their physician.

With this information, communities can work together to determine what resources are needed, how to more effectively utilize the resources that are currently available, and what needs to be done to address the Social Determinants of Health as a community. Understanding patients SDoH also allows care providers to work with patients to develop an effective care plan that meets all their needs.
