The owner of the Red Bar says he will rebuild. If you are not familiar with the Red Bar, it is an iconic restaurant/bar in Grayton Beach and located about a mile from 30A. Grayton Beach is one of the many beaches that are part of Santa Rosa Beach. Our favorite meal at Red Bar was crab cakes but they were only served Friday nights.

Both condos inside and out are fine. Linda and I are home in Tennessee but I learned yesterday a good friend rode out the storm in Seagrove Beach (6 to 9 miles east of our condos). Jon offered to check on our Gulf Place condo last night. Everything inside and outside was fine. There was some debris around the complex but no more than the amount of debris after a normal thunderstorm. I was surprised to learn the electricity was still on at Gulf Place last night. The electricity was off yesterday at our Sanctuary at Redfish condo and it is probably still off this morning. The internet and probably cable service is out at both condos but that is no surprise.

The Clyde B. Wells Bridge (US 331) closed yesterday and reopened yesterday afternoon. Shortly after it was reopened, it was closed again. It was reopened last night and they said it was for real this time.

The 30A team took a drive down Scenic Hwy 30A after the storm had passed yesterday. They said the visual survey of 30A, from Inlet Beach to Dune Allen, showed minimal damage to the community. They continued by saying a few trees were down, there was some debris on the road, Bud and Alley’s lost a small part of its gazebo roof, many docks on the Bay were destroyed, but overall, damage appears cosmetic and minimal.

We have not been worried about our vacation condos in Santa Rosa Beach until now. I turned on The Weather Channel this morning and saw Jim Cantore reporting from Panama City Beach which is only 20 miles East of our condos. It is never good when Jim Cantore comes to your area.

Future Olympian in 16 years? Beau, my grandson, is a natural-born swimmer. He is holding his breath and with his eyes open, he is going under water to get rubber torpedoes. He dives to the second step from the bottom without any help. He dives to the bottom step with a little help. With my help, he even goes to the bottom of the pool in the shallow end (3-1/2 feet deep) and picks up the torpedoes. When I say to blow bubbles, he blows bubbles when he goes under water. He also tries to float on his back. When he jumps off the side of the pool to me, I let him go underwater and he holds his breath until I pull him up. I say he is a natural because Beau is only TWO (2) years old.

We were vacationing in our Sanctuary at Redfish condo (located about 3 miles east of Gulf Place) around the middle of May. Calm ocean, turquoise water, white sand, and deep-blue sky . . . it looked like we were in the Caribbean.

Does anyone rent vacation properties through Vacation Rentals by Owner (VRBO). A few weeks ago VRBO started adding their own service fee to people renting through VRBO. This new service fee is not a fee for using a credit card; we already pay VRBO 3% for each credit-card transaction. This new service fee ranges between 5.5% to 9% and is based on the rental amount and cleaning fee (before tax). VRBO said this fee is to keep the website running and to provide customers with better customer service. This is absolutely ridiculous because owners, like Linda and me, already pay a very-high subscription fee. Linda and I paid $1,249.00 this year for our Gulf Place condo listing. A lot of owners are very upset and rightly so because VRBO has become very, very greedy.

If you have rented from us, we will be glad to help you avoid this new service fee. If you are able to pay with a check, VRBO will not be able to charge you a service fee.

Linda does not ask for my help in the kitchen very often but she did a couple of nights ago. I don’t know anything about cooking or food preparation but I am good at taking directions. Linda had some potatoes laid out and asked me to peel half of them.

I had a teaching job on St. Kitts (in the Caribbean) last week. Although I made Linda go with me, I did not make her go to the beach when I was teaching . . . she did that on her own. We are spoiled to our white sugar-sand beach and turquoise water. While the water was clear in the Caribbean Sea, it wasn’t the right color because the sand is not white. We love our Santa Rosa Beach.
