Traveling from a far and want to bring your dog along for the trip to dog friendly Sea Ranch Abalone Bay? Then consider flying Bark Air!

BARK Air, a new charter plane service that allows people to fly with their dog at their side, is expanding to San Jose Mineta International Airport this fall, bringing what the company calls a “unique, stress-free and dog-centric travel experience” to the South Bay.

The airline launched last month with flights between New York and Los Angeles and New York and London, and in the next few months will begin flights from Paris, Chicago, Phoenix and Miami/Fort Lauderdale. Flights will run from Chicago and New York to San Jose’s airport.

BARK Air, the first company of its kind, is a public charter operator, not a direct air carrier and does not own or operate the aircraft. What they specialize in is keeping dogs comfortable, happy and safe during their time in the air.

BARK Air will allow people and pups to fly together in a charter airplane from the San Jose airport starting in the fall. The airline is first of its kind, offering spa services for pooches.

Great News!
In February 2023, a cherished community center in the coastal town of Gualala, California was burned with no clear motive. Now, just over one year later San Francisco–based architecture office Figure, led by James Leng and Jennifer Ly, and landscape architecture office Terremoto have officially presented their design for the rebuilding of the community center. The designs were shared publicly at a meeting attended by community members.

Figure and Terremoto have revealed designs for new community center in Gualala, California to replace one burned by arson in 2023.

The 17th annual Mendocino Film Festival kicks off May 30 and runs through June 2. Final preparations are underway, and filmmakers from near and far are planning to come to beautiful Mendocino.

The festival will offer 65 compelling, engrossing, and entertaining films on a wide variety of subjects and themes. 42 filmmakers, film subjects, and actors will be in attendance to talk about their creative inspirations, chat with filmgoers, and answer questions after their movies.

As you leave Fort Ross and just before you reach the Mendocino County line is the community of The Sea Ranch, known for its distinctive architecture. Developed in the early 1960s by architect and planner Al Boeke, homes in this modern utopian community were designed to preserve the area’s natural, rugged beauty and coastline, and would be based on ecological principles with minimal impact on the native environment, “to live lightly on the land.” That philosophy continues for over a half century. It is also noted for the pioneering supergraphic designs of Barbara (Bobbie) Stauffacher Solomon who recently passed away. As the graphic designer for the project, she worked on promotional materials and created the Sea Ranch logo. Her enormous spatial designs of bold diagonals, circles, arrows, letters and blocks of bull’s-eyes brighten up the interiors of the Moonraker locker rooms and that of The Sea Ranch Lodge.

The Sea Ranch community stretches ten miles, bordered by the Gualala River and its regional park to the north and Salt Point State Park to the south both with campgrounds available. The private community of The Sea Ranch provides 5 public trails off Highway 1, offering an opportunity to stretch your legs and to enjoy a bit of respite at their connected beaches. For longer stays, vacation rentals such as oceanfront Sea Ranch Abalone Bay provide access to all the private community’s amenities, including 3 recreation centers with pools and tennis court. Guests have access to 50 miles of pristine hiking trails along the coast, through the grassy meadows and up into the redwoods. Guests may also enjoy the private beaches along the 10 mile stretch of coast, many with staircase access from the high bluff to the water’s edge.

Do keep your eye out for any distressed pelicans

BREAKING: Right now all along the California coast, scores of Brown Pelicans are being found lethargic, weak, and emaciated. WildCare has already admitted eight distressed pelicans this week alone and we are preparing for an influx of many more in the coming days.

Some are tangled in fishing line, many are being found in odd locations far from the coast, but all are clearly starving. What is happening? We don't yet know.

We usually stabilize and transfer these large, challenging waterbirds to our partner organization, International Bird Rescue, as they specialize in aquatic birds, but they are already overwhelmed with Brown Pelican patients of their own. IBR and other wildlife care centers along the coast have admitted hundreds of emaciated pelicans of all ages in just the past few weeks.

If you see a pelican looking unwell or in an unusual spot, he probably needs help. Call WildCare's Hotline at 415-456-7283 for assistance and advice. Dog owners in California are reminded to take precautions to protect their pets from Salmon Poisoning Disease.

Salmon Poisoning Disease is a potentially fatal condition seen only in dogs after they eat certain types of raw or cold smoked fish like trout and salmon that are infected with a bacteria-like organism, Neorickettsia helminthoeca, which is transmitted by the parasitic flatworm (or “fluke”) Nanophyetes salmincola.

“Dog owners are advised to be cautious and to keep their dogs away from salmon, steelhead, trout and other freshwater fish carcasses.”

One Heck of a Fungus

In late 2023, the California golden chanterelle became our very first state mushroom. It edged out various fungal contenders, including its almost-as-popular, toxic lookalike, the jack o’ lantern mushroom. Debbie Viess, co-founder of the Bay Area Mycological Society, gives us a look at this favorite fungus, which can grow to monstrous size and is among our most delectable local shrooms.
