Hiding amongst the poppies and other flowers in the flower garden, you can find some fresh basil and rosemary to enhance any meal. Come July, keep an eye out for fresh blackberries along long the west fence, where they like to hide in the shade.

Coconino National Forest, which surrounds the Sedona area, is now closed due to extreme fire risk. Please be safe and cognizant of the risk of fire.

Coconino National Forest went into full closure on Wednesday, 6/23/2021 at 8 a.m. and remains so today as fire danger remains high and is threatening communities.

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., June 29, 2021 — REMINDER! - Due to fire danger, dry conditions, and persistent wildfire activity during a time when firefighting resources are sparse, the entirety of Coconino National Forest closed for public safety on Wednesday (June 23) at 8 a.m.

A full forest closure means that the public is prohibited from entering any part of Coconino National Forest at any time. Only those with private inholdings will be allowed access to their property, as well as personnel providing utility support where necessary, and firefighters performing their duties.

Forest Service personnel attempt to reach as many people as possible to begin vacating campsites and informing individuals who are camping in the forest currently. Campers and visitors to the national forest should vacate their campsites before the closure begins, and the public should cancel any plans for visiting the Coconino National Forest for the next several weeks.

Though parts of the national forest may receive rain from sporadic storms over the next couple of weeks, this closure will not be rescinded until sufficient precipitation is received to adequately reduce the risk of wildfire, and hot, dry weather conditions are no longer forecast to continue. In short, this closure will continue until conditions are such that the closure can be lifted.

Work on thinning and other forest and watershed restoration projects will cease. Partner agencies, organizations, concessionaires, outfitters, permit holders, and contractors, are all prohibited from entering the national forest.

Violating closures and fire restrictions is a violation that carries a mandatory appearance in federal court, punishable as a Class B misdemeanor with a fine of up to $5,000 for an individual or $10,000 for an organization, or up to six months in prison, or both.

Copper Star Upgrades!
We recently added a Fellow Burr Grinder to complement our Bonvita coffee maker and stainless steel French Press. Even the most discerning coffee drinkers will appreciate a hot mug of coffee made with freshly ground beans while watching the morning light spread across the red rocks from our private deck. With luck, there will still be some beans left from Joe's Daily Grind- a favorite here at Copper Star.

Explore these five hikes that show off Arizona's best mountain, desert and red-rock scenery while everyone else is out looking at the leaves.

I just wrote a story on some good fall hikes for Arizona, and these have nothing to do with leaf peeping. It’s just to encourage folks to take advantage of warm clear October days and get out to explore this beautiful state, away from crowds. The story won’t run for a several days but I’ll give you a sample here. Over the weekend, I hiked the Ridge-Sketch loop in Sedona off of Chavez Ranch Road. It’s a moderate route of less than three miles with some fun scrambling up and across a plateau graced on several sides with big panoramas. I felt good being back again bathed in soft autumn light, smelling the aroma of sun-warmed pines and junipers, and waving to all my old favorite formations. That’s Cathedral Rock in the distance. Cathedral always looks different depending on the angle you see it. I’m always happiest when my boots are on a trail and the Arizona sun is on my back and I have miles behind me with miles yet still to go. The landscape and I are at one and I breathe that fresh air and listen to that ancient silence. I’m hiking and I don’t need anything else.

Don't miss this opportunity! Roger Naylor is a well-known outdoor philosopher and photographer, and he will be LITERALLY just around the corner this Thurs. Jan. 10th! What a treat!

Let’s talk about Sedona. Because let’s face it, if Arizona didn’t have the Grand Canyon, the red rocks of Sedona would be our signature landscape. It is a place of astounding beauty defined by mesas and mountains, towers and castles of stone that change colors with every whim of the light. Even more importantly, it is accessible to almost everyone. Whether you’re a hiker or mountain biker or art lover or romantic or spiritual pilgrim or just a weary traveler looking for a place to relax and recharge, Sedona has it all. And for those you fortunate enough to live in or near Sedona, I have this important announcement: I’ll be there Thursday morning giving a presentation! You can come and listen to me blab Thurs Jan 10 at 10am at the Sedona Heritage Museum. As part of the museum’s Living History program, I’ll be sharing stories from my book “The Amazing Kolb Brothers of Grand Canyon.” There’s a strong connection to the Kolbs since Emery’s daughter Edith and her family lived in Sedona for many years, and in fact, still have a home there. My presentation is free and open to the public. I’ll have books for sale afterward. Come out to hear some great history, or if you just want some good Sedona hiking tips, I’ll be happy to provide those as well. Just for you guys, here are 10 of the best Sedona trails: Hangover, Hiline, Margs Draw, Baldwin, Courthouse Butte Loop, Pyramid-Scorpion Loop, West Fork, Broken Arrow, Mescal and the Hogs. Maybe I’ll post some lesser-known Sedona trails soon. Hope to see you at the very cool Sedona Heritage Museum on Thurs at 10!
