If you are looking for a historical spot located minutes from Pigeon Forge, Sevierville, or Gatlinburg, pay a visit to Emerts Cove Covered Bridge. This impressive bridge takes you back in time as you think about the history of the community and its early settlers. Frederick Emert, a soldier in the Revolutionary War, settled in the area in 1790. The bridge is named after him and his family since he was the first settler in the area.

When you arrive, you will see the impressive architecture of this log cabin-style structure. It shows off themed decorations during certain holidays, including an evergreen wreath at the front. Cut-out windows line the bridge, giving you an impressive view of the surrounding Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The bridge sits above the water on concrete feet, surrounded by trees and the rushing river. When the water is clear, you may spot fish swimming up the creek as they look for food.

Emerts Cove Covered Bridge is the perfect spot to take photos, offering a beautiful backdrop with historical roots. You can walk across the bridge and take a tour of the historic City Hall nearby. Keep walking for a short distance, and you will reach the cemetery, which is Frederick Emert’s final resting place.

Here's a little Smoky Mountains history you may find interesting....

One would think that with a name like Cumberland Jack (also known as Smoky Jack) that this would be a story of an icon mountain man. But Cumberland Jack was a 90-pound German shepherd dog.

What made Cumberland Jack famous? Well, some 100 years ago the canine would haul 20-30 pounds of supplies up Mount LeConte to his owner Paul Adams. In 1925, Paul Adams began the first permanent camp on Mount LeConte. You see, Cumberland Jack was no ordinary dog. He was a former police dog. As fate would have it, Cumberland Jack’s former owner, a Knoxville detective, was killed in a gun battle and Adams acquired the dog for $250 (roughly $4,400 today).

After acquiring Cumberland Jack, Paul Adams thought his new canine companion needed a new name to match their mountainous home. So Adams renamed Cumberland Jack to Smoky Jack.

When Adams needed supplies at his camp, he would put a list in saddlebags and strap them to Smoky Jack’s back. Smoky Jack would then trek from Mount LeConte to Ogle’s Store in Gatlinburg, which sat across from where Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies now stands to get the supplies. After the supplies were placed in the 9 inch by 12 inch saddle bags, Smoky Jack would trek back up to Mount LeConte to Adams.

The original saddle bags were intended to fit over cavalry horses' saddle pommels, but Adams had them modified to give the German shepherd a new purpose.

For nine months, Smoky Jack made the trek on what is now Rainbow Falls Trail, carrying up to 30 pounds at a time, while Adams built the first permanent camp on Mount LeConte. But in Spring 1926, the duo’s time on Mount LeConte ended after Paul Adams was fired.

Adams and his saddlebag-wearing sidekick stayed in the Smokies for a little while longer working as guides before moving to Alpine in Middle Tennessee and eventually settling in Crab Orchard in Cumberland County. Adams changed the dog's name back to Cumberland Jack.

Cumberland Jack stayed at his partner’s side for nearly a decade more, living to the ripe old age of 14. Adams buried his constant companion on his land with a special headstone, which read "Cumberland Jack II 1920-1935."

Cumberland Jack's saddlebags are on display at the Great Smoky Mountains Collections Preservation Center in Townsend.

We took an old barn door from a barn in Friendsville, TN, and cut it in half the full length. Then hung it on a track with rollers.

After many, many months of construction - we unveiled the new "log cabin" treehouse today with an open house tour. Thank you to those who stopped by to visit.

As you may remember on the Barnwood Builders episode 4 of Season 14, the treehouses started off with just these logs. Today, things look much different. Hope you enjoy the pictures!

Both the Chasing Butterflies and Beehive treehouses are available to rent beginning in September. Use the following link to view pricing and availability.

Here are the details:
Date: Saturday, August 26, 2023
Time: 12:00pm to 3:00pm
Location: Park at Wears Valley United Methodist. 3110 Wears Valley Road, Sevierville, TN 37862. We will provide a 5-minute shuttle ride to the treehouses. We have limited parking at the treehouses.

The “Open House” will tour the last two treehouses (Chasing Butterflies & Beehive) being finished that are available to rent beginning Sept. 2023. The two (2) treehouses that will be open to tour are repurposed 1850’s log cabins that were featured on the Barnwood Builders TV show, Season 14, episode 4 – Log Cabin Treehouse. Located in Wears Valley (between Pigeon Forge, TN & Townsend, TN). The treehouses are in the woods and sit adjacent to the Great Smokies National Park.

The Village consists of four unique treehouses that sit among hundreds of wild Rhododendrons and are perched from 10 to 30 feet up in the trees, depending upon which one you select! Each treehouse has unique décor, modern amenities, oversized windows, hot tubs, and firepits. The village has creeks with water levels that change depending on the season.

Treehouse update!

Hello Fellow TreeNesters, things continue to progress with the final 2 treehouses for the Village. Here is a status:

First, the power company finally was able to get the power pole set. That was needed so we could finish installing underground power and water lines which is now happening.

Culvert pipes were installed at the road & driveway, so cars can easily drive into parking areas.

Foam Insulation completed in the ceiling with batten insulation done in the walls.

Ceiling boards are going up over the next week, along with the barnwood walls.
