“When I fell and Mohamed became a nurse, TLC was born.” – Sally Donde, Co-Founder, 1st Client
Our story starts with Sally Dondes. If you were to walk into Sally’s apartment years ago, it would be obvious why she would not want to leave. An avid antique collector and a pillar in the community, her home was filled with treasures from her busy life. Sally was daughter of immigrants and grew up during the great depression. Her life experiences taught her about independence. They also taught her the value of community and honed her skills as a successful businesswoman. For most of her adult life, she was a landlord managing her and her husband’s properties. Sally was well known on Church Street by her routine and the table she set up at what was then known as Woolworth’s, which is now Outdoor Gear. She had great stories about helping to shape Burlington, like how she was the first customer of the Vermont Teddy Bear Company by buying a teddy bear from the cart which became the legendary company it is today. When Sally fell, she needed help getting through rehab. She did not qualify for home health care and was unable to live in her apartment alone. She did not want to leave her home. Luckily, she knew an outstanding young man named Mohamed, who was going through nursing school at the time. Mohamed had often helped Sally during weekend trips out to the lake over the summers and was familiar with her routines. He helped her regain her independence by getting her out of rehab a full four months faster than expected. It did not take long to realize that Sally was not alone. Vermont has a rapidly aging population and it has become alarmingly evident that not only is in-home care urgently in demand but assisted living facilities throughout our state and in New Hampshire are in desperate need of qualified caregivers. The experience with Sally taught Mohamed what experts in elderly care already know; That the best care is compassionate care at home. Our parents, grandparents, and loved ones deserve to live their best lives possible. They Deserve The Best Care Possible. With this realization, TLC HomeCare was born. TLC is committed to providing the best care possible for your loved ones. TLC is the only skills tested and trained agency with nurse evaluators to oversee individual client cases and provide ongoing training and support groups to our caregivers and members of our community including law enforcement and first responders. No other agency in Vermont provides 24/7 access to an on-call nurse, nursing follow-ups every 30, 60 and 90 days and PACT training to our staff and local population through our very own TLC Academy. Anyone can start home care in Vermont, but not all have the proper skills or provides the level of care TLC professionally trains for. We are members of your community, we also have loved ones for whom we desire the best care possible with tender love and care. That is our mission for the loved ones in our community.

Mobility Aids for your Loved Ones

As we all get older, it gets harder and harder to move, but most are likely to retain their independence until quite late in life. You can buy and install several devices in your home so that your loved one can still feel safe and independent. If you want your loved one to be able to stay in their home as long as possible, it would be wise to consider a few of these devices.

Canes for Walking

Among the most common devices purchased are canes. There are several sizes, designs, and colors available to your elderly loved one. The prices vary greatly, but some of them are within your budget. When canes are used correctly, they can help prevent falls for the elderly. They can help improve balance and stability as well. The primary purpose is to decrease the amount of weight placed on the lower body joints, making them popular for the elderly who have arthritis or are recovering from surgery.

When choosing a cane, you want to make sure it suits your loved one’s unique mobility needs. Single-point canes are generally used. They can be ideal for elderly adults who struggle with balance and those with brain or spinal cord injuries. Three or four-point canes are less common, but they are suitable for those with trouble with balance.
Walkers with Two Wheels

A two-wheel walker is correctly named because it has two wheels. It works similarly to a walking cane, preventing falls, and it is ideal for older adults with limited mobility. The stems of the two-wheel walkers support up to one-half of a person’s body weight when used correctly.

There are a few other benefits of using a two-wheel walker:

● With wheels on the front, Walker doesn’t require being lifted, so they are perfect for elders who suffer from upper body weakness.
● Walker’s help to alleviate lower-body pain by reducing the strain on the lower extremities.
● Walkers have been found to decrease the risk of falling while building strength and replacing muscles lost over time.

Using a two-wheeled walker effectively takes practice. Home care professionals like TLC can help make sure that your loved one feels comfortable with their device. They will also care for your elder while you’re at work to ensure their safety, and comfortability will be a waste of money if your loved one does not use it properly. Using a two-wheeled walker could be hazardous to seniors if not used correctly.

Stairlifts

One of the most popular devices purchased for elders who live in two-story houses is stairlifts. These devices allow elderly adults who have low mobility to get upstairs. Stairs can be scary for elders who have weakness in the lower part of their bodies. They could get stuck or, even worse, fall. It is advisable to examine the cost and installment of stairlifts because they can save your loved ones’ life.

Straight or Curved Stairlifts: Which one is Best for your Loved One?

A stairlift can be easily installed on any staircase. This might help your loved one access the upper level of their house without putting their lives in danger. If your loved one has a straight staircase, the straight stairlift would be the best option. However, if your loved one has a curved staircase, curved stairlifts may be required.

Activator Poles

This is a mobility device shaped like a pole. It can help lower-body joints, and it may also help restore a healthy gait. A postural aid can help elderly adults who want a better balance, posture, and stability. An Activator Pole comes in handy for moving around the house or for taking walks. Made of lightweight aluminum, you will never have to worry about your loved one collapsing or becoming hurt.

Knee Walkers

Knee walkers bear a structural resemblance to a bicycle or a tricycle that helps elderly citizens with knee problems to move around safely. Most believe that knee walkers are more effective than crunches and are more durable. They also help with maneuverability for people with mobility impairments. Like a bicycle, they usually offer a seat where you can place their tired leg on or behind. In some cases, they also have a storage basket, so your loved one doesn’t have to move more than once.

Conclusion

These devices make it possible for your loved ones who once were active people to become more mobile. You desire your loved ones to be as comfortable as possible, and they will feel more at ease at home rather than a facility. Most elderly adults would rather be at home rather than anywhere else. Their independence is important to them; helping them access some of these devices will help them feel as if they still have control.

9 Common Concerns about Hiring a Home Health Care Provider

Our loved ones mean the world to us; as they age, of course, we worry about their well-being safety and to ensure they are not lonely. As we try to be there as much as possible, sometimes we cannot, causing unwanted worry and stress. Hiring a home care provider is a smart move for your family member's care, but many concerns come to mind. Here are 9 common problems with hiring a home health care provider.

1. Care Professionals Don’t Care about Their Patients

This type of career choice usually calls for people who have a loving and caring nature about them. However, family members do worry about caregivers taking care of their loved ones. Yes, some horror stories about a slim few aids have caused harm towards patients, but a lot of these providers vet their applicants before moving forward with them. When working with a quality company that hires knowledgeable and well-trained staff, you will always receive the best care for your loved one.

2. Care Professional Abuse and Steal from Their Patients

Of course, we have all heard those stories of seniors being mistreated and being stolen from. Because of that fear, many family members put off pursuing a home care aid, even if they are in desperate need of someone. There are some things you can do to ensure the safety of your loved one and your belongings. You want to ask potential providers about their hiring process and how they go about finding their talent, and ensure that their staff is fully licensed in caring for older adults. Lastly, you can use nanny cameras as well to ensure that your personal belongings aren’t stolen.

3. Care Professionals are only Needed For Very Sick Seniors

Well, that is not entirely true. Yes, progressive illnesses are a more common reason for family members to hire health care professionals, but it isn't the only reason. Rather than sending your loved one to a lonely, expensive nursing home, they can receive the same care from the comfort of their own home. Professional caregivers are there for medication distribution and cooking meals, helping move that elder around the house, personal hygiene, etc. The person doesn't have to be ill. They could have a hard time walking or may need someone to help around with housework. This makes it easier for you, as a family member, to go about your day, such as errands, work, etc.

4. Having No Control Who Comes into Your Home

It can be nerve-wracking for someone to welcome a caregiver into your home to care for your loved one. Most of these providers understand that. When you finally select that company, they will analyze your loved one’s needs and assign a caregiver or two. These are people who are aware of what your loved one needs, and if you or your elder do feel uncomfortable, all you need to do is call and make a complaint. Other companies allow you to interview their staff to ensure you’re getting the best of the best. This puts more people at ease, rather than just waiting to see who shows up.

5. Nursing Homes are Better than Home Health Care

It depends on the person, but most older people often stay where they know, then up and moving somewhere they don’t. When having someone come to your loved one to care for them, it is a lot less stressful than staying in a nursing home where they don’t know anyone. Yes, they both have skilled staff and offer the same amenities, but keeping your loved one where they feel comfortable is way more important.

6. When an Elderly Adult only needs Assistance with Personal Care, They Don’t Qualify for Home Health Care

Not true! Older adults who need help with day to day things are more commonly treated these days to avoid nursing homes. Personal care is essential for elderly adults due to their skin and body becoming more fragile day by day. Having a caregiver there to assist will make it easier and keep their nerves calm. Also, if your loved one needs help with personal care, they probably need help with other things around the house, which the caregiver can assist with as well.

7. Seniors who are in Need of Around the Clock Care Don’t Qualify for Home Health Care

Many companies offer 24 hours, 7 days a week to ensure around the clock care for seniors that need it. The provider you go with will provide caregivers to interchange from day shift to night shift to ensure that your loved one is never alone.

8. Home Health Care is Expensive

Every company has different prices, but many can work with your budget. Also, depending on if your loved one is a veteran, they can receive benefits for long term care or short term care. There are approved programs for any elderly adults who are on Medicaid or other insurance policies. There are ways for you to provide this type of care for your loved one.

9. You are the Primary Caregiver, and You Don’t Need Any Help

You shouldn't have to spend all day every day caring for your loved one. It is a complicated process to handle a sick, loved one. There is a lot of emotions tied up with the whole situation. It would help if you had time for yourself to manage your things as well. It is not healthy to be the only one taking your loved one's health head-on. Ask for help; hire some help. Your loved one will be better off, and you will have more time to do things for yourself too.

Conclusion

It can be nerve-wracking in hiring a caregiver. You want to be sure you’re hiring the best care for your loved one. But going about this the right way, you will. TLC Home Care can help you out with your loved one’s needs; with their talented staff, you are sure to have some of the most knowable caregivers ensuring the safety and well-being of your loved one.

How Much Does it Cost to Provide Your Loved One with Home Care Caregivers in New Hampshire?

Home health care is not as expensive as it is when it comes to hiring in-home help. Everyone assumes that it is costly because it is a luxury rather than a necessity in some people’s eyes. When it is more of a necessity and need than sending your loved one to a nursing home, which ends up being more expensive, home care caregivers may be an affordable option.

When looking for a reasonably priced patient care agency to work with when hiring at-home help, in New Hampshire, it is the most rationally priced than most states. As one of the most popular areas for Americans to So, for anyone who resides in New Hampshire, you have some options to pay for the help, but how much does it cost?

What are Home Health Care Aides?

Home care caregivers are skillful medical workers who provide services for elderly patients within the home. They can cook, clean, provide medical attention, dress, bathed, etc. It is a convenient thing to have, especially if your loved one lives at home.

Most believe that it is more beneficial for loved ones to put their family member in a nursing home. When that is not the case. Most elderly adults instead are provided care within the safety of their home. The surroundings they are familiar with, their family can come by more often, and they still have that independence most elderly adults long for.

Nursing homes are expensive; they are way more costly and more deadly. Most people complain about how their loved ones are cared for and treated when at a nursing home. Yes, there are other elders there, but they still feel lonely due to the lack of family.

Having a home health care aide, there is more comfortable companionship, instead then nurse and patient. It is more personal, rather than just another workday for a nurse or doctor. Plus, the family can visit rather than make appointments to see their loved ones, as if they are in jail. All around, home health care is a better way to care for your loved ones. It is less stressful, and fearful and your loved one will feel more independent.

How Much Does Home Care Cost?

Well, it all depends on what your loved one needs. Depending on the severity of the elders’ condition, you may need more than most people need. Do you need an around-the-clock aide, maybe a few days a week, or only during the week?

Typically a home care aide is paid $25 per hour in New Hampshire. Knowing the average hourly wage, you can calculate how much it could cost for the number of hours needed to take care of your elder.

Plus, if you go through an agency, it can be a lot more cost-effective. And you will be provided the services for your payments. When you venture out into hiring an independent nurse, you could get taken advantage of. When you hire an independent nurse, sometimes the service isn’t provided, or if you work as an independent nurse, sometimes you won’t get paid. So to keep both parties safe, it is better all-around when you use an agency.

Be sure to check out all your local agencies in the New Hampshire area, and make sure that your choice is cost-effective, reliable, and has knowledgeable staff. An agency you can start with is TLC Home Care. They have been providing the families in New Hampshire with the most professional medical services for years. They are knowledgeable, professional, and are skilled.

Conclusion

When hiring a home care agency, you want to be sure that you are getting the most out of it. You want to be sure that you are hiring the right help with knowledgeable, skilled, and reliable people. Plus, you want to be sure that you are receiving the services that you paid for.

When working with an agency, you are more likely to be paid, assigned to amazing families who require your services and grow your skills. Agency work is very fruitful when you allow it to be, giving open availability, allowing the agency to send you to different areas, and being available to other cases.

TLC Home Care will be able to provide any services and can work with any budget. They have a fantastic staff and a knowledgeable staff that can find what you are looking for. Be sure to check them out when you start doing your home health care search.
