With the past rain, we had higher tides this week. This means you can get to places that were very shallow before. This big fat trout came in on popping cork with limited edition gulp. Reel and rod used was Florida Osprey 2500 with 15lb smooth casting power pro braid, Paired up with a waterloo phantom 6'9" medium-extra fast action. Join us for a SPRING MIGRATION TEXAS SOUTHFARI and enjoy the best of spring migration along the south texas coast! Enjoy this visually stunning time of year as thousands if not millions of colorful migratory birds arrive along the texas coastline as they cross the Gulf of Mexico coming from wintering sites in the tropics in Central and South America in route to northern breeding grounds! Our resident coastal birds are also brightening up as they acquire their beautiful breeding plumages! This last tour of the season is one not to be missed as we immerse into the spectacle of spring migration along the Laguna Madre!

We will set up a nice drinking and feeding area with seeds and oranges for the birds at the SPIBNC and I'm sure we will see some colorful migrants just for our group!

Today we were surprised to find out, we have a newborn swimming around. We named this little dolphin Porter after Porter the golden retriever on our tour!

Cold stun 2024. Sea turtles become lethargic after suffering from hyperthermia in cold freezing weather in South Padre Island, Texas. They can possibly drown, wash up to shore, becoming food for predators, or getting stuck in between rocks and unable to free them selves. We did not think twice to head out on the boats and rescue our local atlantic green sea turtles, giving them a chance to see another day.

Enjoy a South Texas coastal wildlife experience like no other along as we visit some of the most pristine habitats along the beautiful Lower Laguna Madre cared for by local leaders in conservation aboard a comfortable and spacious 26-passenger shuttle bus! Captain Henry takes the wheel, and an on-board biologist will interpret the habitats and wildlife that we encounter along the way.
All great adventures must start with a good breakfast. Our Texas Southfari begins at Cactus Creek Ranch, a wildlife ranch devoted to wildlife conservation and education. Our hosts, ranch owner May Jo Bogatto and family, will serve coffee and breakfast and share some of the research and conservation work being done on the ranch. The birds and nature surrounding the ranch house will make for a relaxing start to the day.
After breakfast and some light exploring, we will then make our way to the Steve Thompson Wildlife Drive of the Laguna Atascosa National Wildlife Refuge. The easy drive, which is normally inaccessible to public vehicles, will take us through coastal prairie, unique coastal Lomas, and right along the shores of the gorgeous Laguna Madre. Laguna Atascosa boasts the longest bird species list of any national wildlife sanctuary in the nation, meaning the diversity of bird species to be seen is staggering! Expected to see Green Jays, Greater Roadrunners, an incredible array of wintering waterfowl, resident water birds, and a chance to see an Aplomado Falcon! Participants can also see the infamous Nilgai, White-tailed Deer, Bobcats, Coyote, Texas Tortoise, and Javelina that inhabit the refuge. Laguna Atascosa is also home to the only population of the endangered American Ocelot.
We will end our refuge visit with a quick stop at the visitor center and then head out to the new hub of local ecotourism, the South Texas Ecotourism Center in Laguna Vista. There, we will enjoy vistas of the Bahia Grande from the observation tower and the state-of-the-art facility and native gardens.
Our Southfari will end on the eastern side of the Laguna Madre on a nice and easy stroll along the boardwalk of the South Padre Island Birding Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary.

The journey begins at the historic Santa Gertrudis where Captain King first camped in 1852. Enjoy a 1.5hr historical tour inside the ranch narrated by its very own ranch guide. Hungry? We got you covered. Ring the cook's dinner bell and experience a barbecue at the historic King Ranch cowboy camp house over a mesquite wood fire.

Master Naturalist from all over Texas met today in McAllen, TX, for their annual meeting. We provided our bus to bring them to South Padre Island Tx. South Padre Island is a destination for many bird species staying for the winter season. Our first stop was the Cactus Creek Ranch. Thank you, Mary Jo Bogatto, for the hospitality and breakfast! Our second stop was the Laguna Atascosa Wild Life Refuge. As we arrived, Amanda De Leon and Betsy Hosick had lunch bags ready for our group. The third stop was South Padre Island Nature and Birding Center. Last was the South Texas Ecotourism Center. Thank you for letting us be part of your event.

The power when people/strangers come together!
Today was a special clean up. There is a lot of planning and research before we go in, to conduct our cleaning at a nesting island for birds. Nesting season is from February thru the end of August. The last week of August, we still had black baby skimmers with their first plumage indicating they where going to be sticking around for a little longer into the month of September. Once the baby black skimmers were good to fly and start their journey, we gave the island a few more weeks before we went in. Thank you to the volunteers that came to help out and RGV Fishing and Waterway Clean Up organization. Richard Hitchcox also restored some signs that were nocked down.

Rest assured we were waiting at the door after we received a call from Henry Rodriquez, owner of Henry's Charters saying he was in Los Fresnos headed our direction with lunch for his Chamber girls! Enjoyed visiting with Henry to find out what has been going on during the summer. This is one busy man. He does private offshore fishing trips, private bay fishing trips, private dolphin encounters, Island adventures, booze cruises, sunset cruises, fireworks cruises, and on and on. When our Winter Texan friends return he will start the VERY POPULAR trips to Mexico, wine🍷 tasting trips, and more.
