Our Story
We are a small business in Tacoma, WA. Base Natural was started in 2003 while finishing up a Master’s degree in environmental chemistry at UC Davis. The owner has had an interest in natural products since her experience of working in a natural products company. While in graduate school, she teamed up with an environmental engineer who was soap-inspired by the movie Fight Club and Base Natural was formed. After growing the business in Alameda, CA, we moved to Tacoma, WA in September 2011.
Unlike the soaps produced in Fight Club, Base Natural only uses natural, vegetable based ingredients. Since 2003, product lines of lip balms, bath teas, bath salts and organic eye pillows have been created at Base Natural. You can also find a variety of gift baskets and other accessories to complement our natural products.
During product development, we create and test formulations containing quality ingredients. Our ingredients are listed with each product and are posted on Skin Deep so that you can make informed choices of the goods you are purchasing. We want to provide products that strive to be as eco-friendly as possible while keeping them affordable so that you can use them on a regular basis. Organic ingredients are used when it is considered significantly beneficial. We are proud signers of the Compact for Safe Cosmetics, a national voluntary pledge to avoid chemicals banned in other countries, avoid harmful ingredients whenever possible and fully disclose product ingredients. In 2011, we were reported as one of 322 Champions that met the goals of the Compact.
All of our products are made in small batches to ensure great quality. The products are willingly tested by family members and volunteer testers. None of our products are tested on animals.
We are committed to Base Natural being as eco-friendly and sustainable as possible by doing things such as minimizing our waste during production, re-using all received packaging materials, recycling or reusing boxes received, building soap molds from reclaimed wood, minimizing packaging and using waste scraps from bookbinders and quilters for labeling.
