Fun's things to do when it is raining!

Have the heavy rains got you down and left you with nothing to do? We have a bunch of awesome programs happening at the park this week, and they will all be held inside our ~dry~ Visitor Center and Aquarium!

Today, we will be hosting who will tell you all about the curious land hermit crabs that live in our park! They will be in our lobby today from 11 AM to 2 PM.

Then, on Monday, it's World Croc Day! Crocodile Lake National Wildlife Refuge (as well as a potential live animal guest 🐊) will be telling us all about our Florida crocodilians. They will be hanging out in our lobby on Monday from 11 AM to 2 PM.

Escape the house or the hotel room and check out our aquarium while you're at it!

FUN FACTS ABOUT BETSY, OUR 40FOOT LONG AND 30 FEET TALL LOBSTER..

Commissioned in 1980 by artist Richard Blaze of Marathon for a local restaurant owner hoping to draw in more customers. After five years of Richards painstaking work to completion, the restaurant had closed its doors.

Enter Tom Vellanti who acquired the 40 foot Fiberglas monster to display in front of his treasure island village. Shortly there after the village is turned into a school. Of course everyone wants a 30 foot tall lobster right?

Fast forward to 2009 when the anatomically correct lobster found it’s way to mile marker 86.7 . She was placed on the highway at the Rain Barrel Artist Village in Islamorada. She’s guarded the secluded little Village now for nearly 25 years.

Fun facts.. she is believed to be the 2nd most photographed site in the Florida Keys. 2 nd only to the Key West Bouy located exactly 86.7 miles South! It’s a pretty solid guess to say she’s the largest lobster in the world. After a carel and measured survey Capt Rob calculated that her tail would contain between 850 and 900 pounds of delicious lobster meat!

Most people don’t realize what a cool place the village behind it is. Just a tiny door that enters a gift shop. however the back of the shop opens up into a beautiful canopy of native hardwoods and a multitude of interesting shops.

Key Largo's fireworks show have been a Fourth of July and New Year's spectacles for many years, shot off Blackwater Sound in the bayside in the Upper Keys. The bayside near the mile marker 104 area is where the action will be happening.

"A really, really brilliant Airbnb. We have stayed in many right around the US and the world and this was up there with the best. The hosts were fantastic, responsive and helpful. The apartment was perfect for me, my wife and three children (7,5,2). The apartment was peaceful and had everything you could possibly think of for a short stay. We visited Alligator Lighthouse for the first time, it was absolutely amazing!!! Hire a local charter the next time you come to visit and snorkel the reef.

Boats with holiday revelers gather around the Alligator Reef Lighthouse Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2022, in Islamorada, Fla., to see the historic structure off the Florida Keys lit up with festive lighting. Because of modern Global Positioning System navigational equipment, the lighthouse was deemed obsolete after its light was extinguished more than seven years ago. In 2021, under the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act, the deed to the lighthouse was transferred to an Islamorada-based organization that began fundraising efforts to preserve the more than 150-year-old structure.
