Making plans for the Fall Foliage Season:

These are typically the dates of near Peak or Peak Colors.
Remember the highest elevations tend to change the earliest-also swampy areas.

From my experience-wet/above normal precip summers-means trees are healthy...with more moisture/sugars in the leaves and typically brighter colors. Cross your fingers.

09/12/2023

Planning a leaf-peeping trip in Upstate New York?

Peak color is expected the first week of October in the Adirondacks, the second week in the higher elevations surrounding the Mohawk Valley, and the third week in the Mohawk Valley.

Here is a drone shot of the fall foliage around Eagle Lake as Route 74 winds over the corner of the lake!

Eagle Lake sits at 944' in elevation and has a maximum depth of 45'.

Isaac Harris found the lake in the 1880's and was the first to build a summer home on its shores.
Back then the lake had originally been called Long Pond, then Paragon Pond, then Chilson Lake and then finally, in 1910, it acquired the name Eagle Lake.

This small lake is well known for it's Brown Trout (which the DEC stocks with 5,000 brown trout every spring!), Bass, and Northern Pike fishing with stories of monster fish swimming it's depths!

Fun little fact about Eagle Lake, it is part of the Hudson River drainage basin, however if lake levels were raised another ~3 feet in elevation, it would become a part of the Champlain drainage basin! lol.

Speaking of Eagle Lake, you might have seen the news that the Adirondack Park Agency (APA) is planning on shutting down the only boat access on the lake, making it only for canoes and kayaks... Now try telling that to the people who live on the lake in houses only accessible via boat!
Now I personally dont think that this boat launch should be shut down, but that is my own personal opinion... If you are interested in learning more to make your own opinion then please visit:
