This time of the year is full of planning. We are “sharpening the axe” — writing down goals, building performance models, and integrating the small details.

“We are thankful for these and all the good things of life. We recognize that they are a part of our common heritage and come to us through the efforts of our brothers and sisters the world over. What we desire for ourselves, we wish for all. To this end, may we take our share in the world's work and the world's struggles.”- J. S. Woodsworth

It was 20 years ago today that I had one of my best performances on a bicycle. It was Stage 2 of , the stage. Yes back then, Mogollon was day 2 with the TT on day 1. Somehow I won the TT stage. I had borrowed some 30 minutes before the start and pedaled like a man possessed for the last 4.5 miles. On the Mogollon stage, I padded my lead by taking the first sprint bonus and then helped 1 of 3 teammates into break. Once we turned right onto the climb, I stayed focused to stay out of the wind till after the flat portion of the climb. The rest I had visualized for months attacking at a cattle guard with 5k to go and finishing as fast as possible. We caught everyone in the break but an English MTBer so I placed 2nd. I still was overjoyed as that climb had haunted me for years. I finally had the performance I envisioned. I went on to take the overall. The field was mainly Pro MTB riders, the and many others aspiring to be professional road racers. Our team was 3 and I could not have won without them. Each day .nomie and managed to get in the break and/or keep me positioned well. .gnomie even won the Crit stage. On the last day(stage 5), I won my first ever road race. With 30k to go attacked and I went went him. We rode through 2 breaks taking one guy to the finish with us. I barely edged Walker in the sprint and he went on to finish 2nd overall. I've raced 7 times from a Cat 4 ( was there) to Cat 1. I've coached and managed 2 master's teams at the race and acted as an assistant DS for the Hincapie Development Team. Incredible memories---The race at one time was even in late June! I'm excited to return there again in 2021 as a coach. 😉Cheers!

to events past This one goes out to 2001 La Vuelta Sinaloa. The race was 7 days and 9 stages in September. Hot hot hot and I believe we raced through a tropical storm on one stage. We had several stage wins and multiple podiums but very little in the overall standings. I remember no air conditioning, never knowing where the finish was and being taken to local authorities to make sure we were legal. Finish in Mazatlan was a great place celebrate the race. The drive home will have be told on a different 😬
