Just us in MITF cooking for soldiers with the amazing initiation of

Tlalim’s initiative aims to feed hundreds of soldiers every day with healthy food. Many soldiers are vegetarian or vegan and their needs for a healthy hot meal are not being met. Tlalim modified the teaching kitchen at the Ayanot Youth Village into a commercial kitchen, so that up to 25 volunteers can prepare approximately 500 healthy meals every day. Once the food is ready, it is packed and sent to our soldiers in the front lines by other volunteers.
Since December 11th, 2023 over 600 volunteers have prepared 26,500 meals for soldiers from 11 different units stationed in the Gaza Envelope. The program called Masa B’Yachad truly embodies unity and togetherness.

Yesterday we had the opportunity to walk around the hostages square, hear the stories of different hostages and leave a mail box behind with letters that we hope will be read as soon as possible!
Tanir, our MITF fellow, shared with us how it felt to be walking around there:
“Going to the hostage square was a mix bag of emotions. I’m really grateful for the experience but I can’t stand that it exists. Going through the tunnel felt very surreal and seeing how time stopped is absolutely heartbreaking. There is comfort in seeing the hope in the community and the camaraderie put towards every exhibit as well as getting to create something and leaving a piece of us at the square”

It’s time to say the last goodbye to our northern group, Haifa! It’s the last appreciation post and we wrap up the year!

Emma, Hannah E, Abigail, Kira, Esther, Thatcher, Adam, Jyllian, Ali, Hannah W, Amanda, Sruly, Carly, Marlee, Ilana, Riley and the one that will share with them all his secrets about Haifa, their coordinator- Ido. We want to appreciate all the you all for how hard you worked to connect Israeli kids to English and raise their motivation!

We asked our fellow Esther what’s the best part about Haifa and this is her answer: “Oh that’s so tricky cuz I love it all. I think for me it’s that we have the beautiful beaches but it’s quieter and more laidback than Tel Aviv. It’s also so green so you have the best of both worlds: beaches and mountains.”

Registration is almost over for this year so this is your time! Apply now!🔥

Another goodbye post from another fantastic group! It’s the last week of the program so everyday we will do an appreciation post to a different group - today is Jerusalem!

Izzie, Lyric, Michelle, Sammy, Alexa, Emily, Vivian, Sean, Hannah, Noa, Miriam, Arielle, Heather, Benny, Joseph, and the one that will always support them, their coordinator- Nitsan. We want to appreciate all the amazing things you did in Jerusalem and for the community 😍

Miriam shared with us that “The best part about living in Jerusalem is all the different kinds of people you get to meet there. From life long Jerusalemites, to tourists visiting the holy sites, rabbis wrapping tefillin, store owners selling Judaica and smoothies, seminary girls singing, and bands playing klezmer music on the street, there’s always someone new to meet. And that’s just on Ben Yehuda. Jerusalem means so much to so many people around the world. There’s history on every hill and in every stone. I’ve learned so much from the people I’ve met this year, and I know I’ll bring this experience with me wherever I go in the future.”

Running low on spots for next year - this is your time! apply now!

05/19/2023

We’re back with another Shabbat Spotlight- and this time we’re learning about Sruly from Haifa 🤩

1. Why did you choose to do your Masa Israel Teaching Fellowship in Haifa?
“I decided on Haifa because I had read that it was Israel's third-largest city. I've spent my entire life in a big city, so I'm used to walking everywhere. I was drawn to Haifa because of how walkable it is. I like how quickly I can walk to a lot of cafes, restaurants, and parks.”
2. What do you like the most about Haifa?
“I love how Haifa is always changing and growing. There are always new buildings and businesses popping up, which makes it a really exciting place to be. It feels like there's always something new to discover, which is why I enjoy it so much.”
3. Where are your favorite places to eat?
“My favorite places to eat are Shtroudl on Ben Gurion for breakfast, Pizza Linga for lunch, Eataliano for (an expensive) dinner, and Cremerie De L’eclair for dessert.”
4. How is teaching in an Israeli school?
“Teaching in Israeli schools is very rewarding. We came to school in September, majority of the kids did not speak or read a word of English. After a lot of hard work, it is now May-time and they are making small conversations. It shows that our efforts paid off.”
5. What are the main challenges that you’re facing?
“Right now, my biggest challenge is figuring out what I want to do next. I got accepted into PA school, but I realized it's not what I want to pursue. So, I'm thinking about going back to college to complete a post-baccalaureate program in another field. Hopefully, this will help me make a decision about my future.”
6. What is a word in Hebrew that new fellows should know before coming?
“A word that new fellows have to know is “נו” (Nu). Nu means many things depending on the intonation, including: to hurry someone along, to express interest, to express disinterest, if said twice to show dissproval etc.”
7. What is some advice that you would give to future fellows?
“One piece of advice I’d give to a future fellow is to check out the instagram accounts that post content of your city. Through these accounts, I found many new restaurants and cafés that I always return to.”

It’s time for another staff spotlight and this time is our Jerusalem coordinator- Nitsan😍😍😍

Her fellows shared with us “The best part about having Nitzan as a coordinator is that she really cares about us as people! She goes out of her way to make us feel at home in Jerusalem. She does so many thoughtful things for us like making us birthday brownies, planning fun events, or checking in on us. We know that we can call her whenever and she’ll be there for us, both as our coordinator and as a friend”

We love you Nitsan!

04/14/2023

It’s time for another spotlight and this time it’s from Jerusalem!

1. Why did you choose MASA Israel Teaching Fellowship in Jerusalem?
I chose to do my fellowship in Jerusalem because of the rich spiritual and cultural history! I came to Israel to explore my religious beliefs and cultural identity and Jerusalem was the place to do that.
2. What do you like the most about your city?
I love the complexity of this city. There are always things to learn and ways to grow. Jerusalem feels holy, almost everything that you do in it feels meaningful and special. It’s a great city to reflect and grow.
3. Where are your favorite places to go eat?
My favorite place to eat is Tacos Louis! I think I go there once a week and it’s worth it every time. Sushi Place is also amazing.
4. How is teaching in an Israeli school?
It’s both difficult and rewarding. I teach at two schools each with very different abilities and needs. Being in two places is hard, but the connections that I have with my students is worth it.
5. What are the main challenges you are facing?
The main challenge that I have is missing my daily routine. Life in Israel is really different and a lot of my interests aren’t available here. However, not having those things has pushed me to get outside of my comfort zone and discover new things.
6. What is a word new fellows have to know in Hebrew before coming?
Definitely “Boker Tov”. I didn’t know any Hebrew before coming on this program and this was one of the only words that I knew. Saying this at my school helped me connect with the other teachers and students even though we don’t speak the same language.
7. What is some advice you have for future fellow? Go out of your comfort zone and make friends with the people in your city! I feel so lucky to have made lifelong friends with the people in Jerusalem. You’ll need each other while you’re here and it’ll make your experience so much more fun.

This week we’re going to learning about one of our favorite fellows (and cities), Annabelle from Mitzpe Ramon! 🌵✨

1. Why did you choose MASA Israel teaching fellowship in Mitzpe Ramon?

“I chose to do MASA Israel in Mitzpe Ramon because I wanted to get a unique experience, living in a beautiful remote desert place while being useful to the Israeli kids in grade school. I also just love the Negev.”

2. What do you like the most about Mitzpe Ramon?

“I love the beauty of the desert, the kindness of the people, and I also love the energy of all the young and creative people and artists.”

3. Where are your favorite places to go eat?

“I do not know. I am not really the type who eats out. But the Sumsumiya place in Mitzpe Ramon is wonderful.”

4. How is teaching in an Israeli school?

“It is always an adventure. I never know what my day will bring. The kids are full of energy. It is a joy to be around the kids and get to know them. I know I feel appreciated from the postcards or drawings they bring me.”

5. What are the main challenges you are facing?

“The main challenge I face is not having an English teacher in my school, since I did not study anything related to children education. However, I get ideas from the English as a Second Language website, as well as from a French class I took at the University which was centered around weekly topics for vocabulary, syntax, and grammar.”

6. What is a word new fellows have to know in Hebrew before coming?

“I think one word is “די” or “die" meaning “stop". I know how it may be confusing to an English speaker.”

7. One advice you have to give to a future fellow

“Be open to change and do not be afraid to be yourself. Have fun with the kids.”

•Our fellows celebrated Valentine’s Day with a pizza party and taught their students how to write cards in English
•Tel Aviv Marathon took place and our strong and incredible fellows took part in it!
•Jerusalem visited the “Shalva” center for disability and got to learn all about their amazing work.

This Shabbat we’ll be highlighting Carly from Be’er Sheva 🤩 Keep reading to learn about this amazing fellow and her beautiful city! 🏜️

1. Why did you choose MASA israel teaching fellowship in Be’er Sheva?

“I choose Beer Sheva mainly for my volunteer opportunity to work with students with Autism! I also loved the idea of living close to Ben Gurion University to still have a college feel around the city!”

2. What do you like the most about your city?

“I love how centrally located Beer Sheva is within Israel. It is very easy to travel to other cities using the bus and train! Beer Sheva also has the most beautiful flowers and parks everywhere!”

3. Where are your favorite places to go eat?

“Beer Sheva is full of diverse food options! I love getting Kuba, italian, falafel, shawarma and even bourekas!!”

4. How is teaching in an Israeli school?

“Teaching in an Israeli school is very different than teaching in the states. I enjoy the energy the students have but enjoy the 2 recess breaks they get even more!”

5. What are the main challenges you are facing?

“It can be tough trying to find your way around when everything is not in your first language. After ulpan and lots of practice, I am able to get by!”

6. What is a word new fellows have to know in Hebrew before coming?

‎“די (die)
I think די is an important word that incoming fellows should know. This word means stop or enough. During the first week of school I was quite scared when I heard the teachers screaming “die” at the kiddos.”

7. One advice you have to give to a future fellow

“Make sure you do all of your research into what city you plan to spend your 10 months at! Take every advantage your city has to offer!”
