Discnothèque is an idea of bringing house music and people together by not allowing people to use their electronic devices (mobile phone, camera, etc.) Our everyday lives are bombarded by our electronic devices. Most people check their mobile devices 100 – 150 times every day; that equates to checking your phone once every 8 minutes. Will people be able to go without that constant connection for 1
– 2 hours in a day? Will people want to talk to others they haven’t yet met without that connecting device? DC9 and Discnothèque aren’t the only club and party to notice the trend. Echostage in DC and Output in NY have signs asking customers not to use their phones on the dance floor. Mister Sunday Parties’ in Brooklyn NY have a dedicated security person for the dance floor. When their staff spots a patron using their phone, the patron is asked to remove themselves from the dance floor. Morris and Spieler believe the best way to experience Discnothèque is to check your phone at the door. A dedicated phone check will be available to people that want to be free of the constant pinging that mobile devices have on our lives. There is a $10 cover charge for the dance party, but the party-goers who check their phone will receive a $5 refund off the initial cover charge.
