Six ways to save money on a last-minute family holiday this summer, including booking on a Tuesday.

HotelPlanner CEO Tim Hentschel explained: “Most often, the pricing teams for hotels and tour operators meet on a Monday to review what’s sold well over the weekend. Then on Tuesday morning they’ll update their systems and websites with deals and offers to increase bookings to hotels and destinations where they have more availability.”

Booking at off-peak times, such as at 6am or midnight on Saturday and Sunday, could also lead to better deals, Hentschel says.

They expected an Olympic boon. But some Paris businesses are experiencing a bust.

Those visitors who do get to Paris face high prices at hotels, leading to rooms sitting empty, according to Tim Hentschel, CEO of HotelPlanner, a hotel booking platform. Paris hotels are seeing 70% occupancy compared with 90% at the same time last year, he said this week, noting that the average rate was twice as high as it usually is — at 700 euros a night.

“The prices that they were charging for Paris hotel rooms and Paris travel over those Olympic days were just too high for consumers to bear,” Hentschel said, adding that hotels are now starting to drop rates dramatically.

Small business owners in Paris expected a boon in visitors once the Olympics arrived. Instead, some, particularly in heavily touristed areas in central Paris, say they're experiencing a bust.

“The best travel hack is extending summer into fall,” says Philip Ballard, the chief communications officer and travel expert for the online booking site HotelPlanner. “Walking on a beach is just as romantic in a nice sweater in October as it is in August, and the rates will come down.”

Nightly hotel rates tend to drop about 20 percent in fall compared with summer, he adds, and with 50 percent less occupancy, “You can get a seat at a restaurant, and it’s a more laid-back experience.” 

A pandemic-born focus on mental health also bolsters travel demand. “Travel is wellness now, and that’s new,” Ballard says. “People are reprioritizing travel in terms of annual budgeting and considering travel an essential part of health and wellness.”
