15.3.2020 :::: Is Vietnam opened its borders to tourism yet?

🔊 The Vietnamese Government on Tuesday agreed to waive entry visa requirements for foreign nationals entering the country from 13 nations.

The details were provided in the newly-issued Resolution No.32/NQ-CP.

Specifically, the waiver would be applicable to citizens from the Federal Republic of Germany, the French Republic, Italian Republic, Kingdom of Spain, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Russian Federation, Japan, Republic of Korea, Kingdom of Denmark, Kingdom of Sweden, Kingdom of Norway, Republic of Finland, and the Republic of Belarus, who stay in Việt Nam for 15 days from the date of entry, no matter what visa types they currently hold or their purposes of entry.

The waivers will last for three years, starting from March 15, 2022 to March 14, 2025, and an extension could be tabled in line with Vietnamese laws.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is tasked with the assessment, evaluation and putting forward recommendations to the Government with regards to the extension, suspension or termination of the unilateral visa exemption policy specified in this Resolution.

The move, reinstating the waiver policy that came to halt in early 2020 in response to the emergence of the coronavirus, coincides with the day Việt Nam is set to fully resume inbound and outbound tourism activities.

The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism, which is the main coordinator of the tourism reopening plan, along with travel agencies and tourism accommodation businesses in the country have been clamouring for the resumption of pre-pandemic visa policies as well as relaxed COVID-19 protocols given the high vaccination rate in Việt Nam, to entice foreign tourists into the country after two years of severe disruptions.

Free stay permit waivers extended until October 31

HÀ NỘI — Foreigners who entered Việt Nam from March 1 can have their temporary stay permits automatically extended for another month until October 31, the Immigration Department announced on Wednesday.

It is another one-month extension to the current policy, issued in mid-May and extended twice since, to support foreigners stuck in the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The move means from now until September 30, people who came to Việt Nam under visa waiver programmes, e-visas or tourism visas from March 1 can stay or leave Việt Nam without doing any paperwork or paying any fees.

Regulations on those who entered the country before March 1 remain the same as the current policy. They can be considered for this permit extension as long as they can prove they are stranded in Việt Nam due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They need to provide certificates issued by their diplomatic mission in Việt Nam through an official diplomatic note with a translation in Vietnamese or documents issued by Vietnamese authorities to confirm they were quarantined or treated for COVID-19, among other reasons beyond their control.

Those who do not fall under these categories or have committed illegal actions have to abide by the existing laws on immigration.

Laos official currency is the Laotian Kip (LAK). Although only the kip can be used legally in day-to-day transactions, in reality three other currencies are used in trading: kips, Thai Baht (THB) and United States dollars (US $). The flow of Thai Baht and US Dollars is very important to the national economy in Laos. An estimated one-third of the money circulating in Laos bears the Thailand Baht, while another is the US$. The Laotian Kip is the preferred currency for small purchases, while for more expensive services and items the prices are in KIP, Baht or Dollars. The price will appear directly in dollars if the equivalent cost is US $ 100 or more.

Laos Extends Lockdown Until 03 May

Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith has moved to prolong Prime Ministerial Order 06/PM, effectively extending the lockdown period for Laos until 3 May.

“The situation regarding Covid-19 has the potential for further spread with 19 cases of infection now confirmed in Laos,” said Prime Minister Thongloun in a statement to the press today.

“One patient has been discharged from hospital after a full recovery, however, the threat of the further spread of the disease is very real, and therefore we have decided to extend the lockdown period under Prime Ministerial Order No. 06/PM, and all relevant regulations, by 14 days, until 3 May.”

Laos went into full lockdown on 30 March, with measures prohibiting all residents to leave their homes except for essential grocery shopping, hospital visits, and any other tasks authorized by the government, such as work undertaken by essential workers.
