Fansipan cable car temporarily closed for maintenance

The cable car to Mt Fansipan, the “Roof of Indochina,” and a funicular train down Muong Hoa Valley in Sa Pa Town are closed for annual maintenance.

They halted operations Monday and will resume on December 6, the page of tourism complex Sun World Fansipan Legend said.

Some tourists expressed disappointment about the month-long suspension since they have already made plans to Sa Pa during the period.

Pun Kankamon Kraisingdecha from Thailan asked in Sun World’s Facebook post: “Is there any chance to open sooner than scheduled? We have booked everything for our trip in early December, and Fansipan is the place we want to visit the most.”

The cable car starts from Hoang Lien station in Fansipan Legend, and can carry 30-35 people at a time, or 2,000 in an hour, to the peak.

From the Fansipan cable car station, visitors need to climb 600 steps to reach the very top of the peak, which is situated 3,147.3 meters above sea level.

The funicular service, starting at the MGallery Hotel in town, allows visitors to admire the beauty of Muong Hoa Valley with its rice terraces and ethnic minority villages.

Sa Pa is at an altitude of 1,500 meters above sea level.

Hanoi Railway authorities firm about shutting down Hanoi Train Street to tourists

Railway authorities have rejected Hanoi Train Street coffee shop owners’ demand to reopen on safety grounds.

There are makeshift coffee shops and so-called selfie hotspots along the track that runs just feet from buildings in the heart of Hanoi’s Old Quarter.

Two weeks ago, after they were closed down for good since the place was too risky, businesses on the street urged authorities to consider making it a fun and safe tourist destination instead of shutting it down.

But railway authorities have refused to reconsider the decision.

Now tourists are prohibited from filming on the street and drinking coffee there, and warning signs saying “dangerous area” have been installed on Tran Phu, Nguyen Thai Hoc and Dien Bien Phu streets.

Foreign tourists disappointed as Hanoi closes famed Train Street

After Hanoi closed coffee shops along its iconic Train Street and put up barriers to prevent tourists’ entry, many foreigners displayed frustration.

Australian tourist Anna Coleman visited Train Street in the heart of Hanoi’s Old Quarter on Thursday night but could not go in due to the barricades put up by police.

“I felt a bit disappointed. The train street is very interesting. We do not have anything like this at home,” Coleman told VnExpress International.

“It’s a great tourist attraction that could be managed better to remain open. Businesses are forced to shut which seems unfair.”

Coleman was one of many foreign tourists that have shown their disappointment after Hanoi authorities decided to shut down coffee shops and selfie hotspots along Train Street as a safety measure.

David Gecewicz from Singapore who visited Train Street in July also felt sad to hear that coffee shops here would be closed by the end of this weekend.

“It’s a cultural landmark and it’s one of the key reasons we made Hanoi the first choice in Vietnam,” David said.

“The coffee shop owner was very mindful of safety and reminded us to move back within the shelter area when trains came through. I saw all coffee shop owners doing this,” he said of his last visit.

Hanoi Train Street, where trains run along a track just inches away from homes and businesses alongside Dien Bien Phu and Phung Hung, has long been one of the most popular tourist sites in Hanoi and an Instagrammable tourist hotspot.

Due to safety reasons, Hanoi authorities announced coffee shops along the street will be closed by this weekend and have their business licenses revoked to ensure safety.

Nguyen Anh Quan, vice chairman of Hoan Kiem District, said local authorities would work with relevant agencies to develop tourism along the Train Street but the business must comply with railway safety regulations.

Tourism insiders do not think the street should be closed off entirely.

Mai Anh, the owner of a cafe on the street, said: “Business household owners in the area have completely complied with railway safety regulations. When the trains were about to come, we always reminded tourists to move out of the tracks to ensure safety.”

Nguyen Tien Dat, director of Hanoi-based travel agency AZA Travel, said that business activities along both sides of the train street have existed for a long time.

Dat proposed to build fences in front of cafes and install warning lights to turn the train street into a safe tourist destination.

Train streets have long existed in Asia and become tourist gems.

In Thailand, Maeklong Market that spreads over 100 meters along the railway near Mae Klong Railway Station has become a famous tourist attraction with trains running at a fixed time.

Shifen Old Streets in Taiwan is famous for its collection of lanes and alleys in and around the Shifen railway station area.

1. War Remnants Museum
The War Remnants Museum is one of the most popular museums in Vietnam, with harrowing exhibits related to the horrors of war in this battle-worn nation. The museum primarily focuses on the Vietnam War, however, some exhibits relate to the first Indochina War with French colonialists.

It’s a good idea to start on the top floor and work your way down, so you cap off your experience with the lighter exhibits on the ground floor.

Most of the displays are photographic images, and some of these are confronting – especially the graphic shots of child Agent Orange victims. Artifacts on display include a guillotine and the “tiger cages” used for Viet Cong prisoners.

Many argue that the museum’s approach is biased; however, the exhibits poignantly portray the brutality of war. The museum also includes a fascinating display on the work of war photographers, from both sides, who lost their lives during the conflicts.

Period military vehicles and weapons are displayed in the museum’s courtyard. After touring the countryside and the Cu Chi Tunnels, you’ll find these exhibits even more moving, but note that some of the exhibits are not suitable for small children.

Hue among cheapest travel destinations for Australians

Australian newspaper The News Daily has listed Vinh and Hue towns in central Vietnam among budget-friendly destinations for Australian travelers amid rising living and airfare costs.

“Australians are travel-hungry after two years of lockdowns, but the rising cost of living and airfares could put globetrotting dreams on hold,” the newspaper wrote.

It said the Australian dollar is much stronger than the Vietnamese d**g, so holiday savings could go further in Vietnam. Currently, AU$1 is worth around VND16,200.

Flights to Vinh and Hue from Melbourne both cost under US$520.

Vinh is known for its beaches and as the economic and cultural center of north-central Vietnam while Hue used to be the feudal capital of the Nguyen Dynasty, Vietnam’s last royal family (1802-1945) and famed for its royal mausoleums and other historic heritages.

Vinh International Airport is around eight kilometers from the city center while Phu Bai Airport is around 15 kilometers from downtown Hue.

Other cheap destinations for Australians include George Town, Kuching and Langkawi in Malaysia, Van and Gazipasa in Turkey.

Vietnam reopened quarantine-free international tourism from March 15 and has lifted most other Covid restrictions since.

🌺🌺🌺 PHU QUY ISLAND ❤️
🛳️🛳️ TRANSPORTATION TO PHU QUY ISLAND:
▶ ️ 9:00 a.m., we took the bus from BD to Phuong Trang (there are Minh Quan, Phuong Anh, ... but I heard there is no transfer bus to the port, so I choose PT)
▶ ️23h30 take Phuong Trang bed car to Phan Thiet (with a transfer bus to Phan Thiet port) with the fare of 160,000 VND / person / way.
▶ ️ 3:30 am arrive at PT port (because I don't know about it early so I can sit at the cafe shop near the port waiting for the ship to arrive). Then 7 am take the Phu Quy Express high-speed train with the bed fare of 400,000 VND / person / way to get to the island (you should go to bed and sleep for about 2h30 to go to the island to be healthy to have the power to go out).

After nearly a month of opening, a 632-meter-long glass bridge in Moc Chau, a popular tourist spot in northern Vietnam, was crowned with a Guinness World Record for its length.

On Saturday, a representative from 26 Moc Chau Tourism JSC (L), the investor of Bach Long (White Dragon) glass bridge, received a certificate from Guinness World Records, the world’s authority on record-breaking achievements.

With this official recognition, the Bach Long bridge has unseated a 530-meter glass bridge outside China’s Guangd**g Province, which was recognized by Guinness as the world’s longest in 2020.

Authorities in Hanoi plan to launch its second food zone in Ba Dinh District in the fourth quarter of this year to boost its night-time economy.

Ba Dinh District People’s Committee stated the entire Dao Ngoc-Ngu Xa area covering seven streets in Truc Bach Ward would be closed off from 7 p.m. to midnight to serve as a food zone every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

In the long run, the district will consider opening the food zone every day and banning vehicles from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.

Covering 4.5 hectares, Dao Ngoc-Ngu Xa area, or Truc Bach peninsula, is on Truc Bach Lake where late U.S. Senator John McCain was shot down and taken prisoner during the Vietnam War.

People from the peninsula to the surrounding areas have to travel through two small bridges at Tran Vu and Ngu Xa streets.

The Truc Bach Lake area, with its charming old-style houses in small alleys, is also home to many cafes and eateries favored by young and old alike. At night, locals and tourists typically flock here to enjoy grilled dishes and specialties like pho rolls.

HCMC to launch helicopter tour

Authorities in Ho Chi Minh City are scheduled to launch a helicopter tour that allows tourists to view the city from the sky as part of efforts to boost tourism after reopening.

The tour using a EC-255 helicopter is expected to be available during the Reunification Day (April 30) holiday to offer tourists a new travel experience.

For short tours that last from 30 to 45 minutes, tourists will have an opportunity to view downtown HCMC and Can Gio, an outlying district of the city that is famous for fresh seafood and eco-tourist sites and is home to Can Gio Mangrove Forest, a biological reserve recognized by UNESCO.

For mid-range tours that last one hour, visitors can fly from HCMC or Can Gio to the Endless Field tourist site in the Mekong Delta province of Long An.

175 Military Hospital will provide the helicopter parking area and healthcare services for passengers while Southern Vietnam Helicopter Company ensures flight safety in compliance with regulations as required by the Ministry of National Defense.

Nguyen Thi Anh Hoa, director of the HCMC Department of Tourism, said the tour was a new and special product set to improve travel experience and attract foreign visitors after Vietnam reopened inbound tourism from March 15.

The tour's price has not yet been revealed.

HCMC hopes to receive 25 million domestic and 3.5 million foreign tourists this year.

Malaysian celebrity apologizes for Vietnamese dress faux pas in Hoi An

A Malaysian model who triggered public outcry for donning an ao dai without its trousers in Hoi An has apologized to Vietnamese netizens for disrespecting their culture.

Siew Pui Yi on Wednesday apologized to Vietnamese online users for donning an ao dai (traditional Vietnamese long dress) without the long-flared bottoms in Hoi An last week.

“During my recent travels to Vietnam, there was a posting of mine that truly upset the people, and I deeply and sincerely apologize for my actions/content and the disrespect to the traditional culture of Vietnam, which I have now taken down,” she wrote on her Facebook account MS PUIYI.

“I absolutely loved my travels. I do hope to have another opportunity to return to Vietnam and of course, take a different approach to shooting my content. I apologize once again and will be more sensitive to local cultures all over the world.”

Last week, Siew flew to Da Nang from Singapore and stayed at a resort near Ha My Beach in Hoi An.

On April 4, she posted two photos of her wearing an ao dai without its trousers while releasing lanterns onto the Hoai River, and the post quickly went viral. Many Vietnamese netizens decried it as “immodest” and “disrespectful” while asking the Facebook account owner to remove the images.

Siew Pui Yi is an internet celebrity from Malaysia. Her Facebook has over 615,000 followers and her Instagram, over 17.3 million.

This was not the first time foreign celebrities had triggered public outcry in Vietnam for wearing traditional Vietnamese dress with cultural faux pas.

In 2019, Vietnamese netizens also expressed anger over American singer Kacey Musgraves wearing ao dai without its long trousers to perform in front of thousands of fans at a concert in Dallas.

The ao dai has for long been an icon of Vietnamese culture, praised for highlighting the graceful beauty of Vietnamese women.

Foreign carriers increase flights to Vietnam as inbound tourism reopens

some foreign airlines have increased the frequency of regular flights connecting to Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang after Vietnam reopened to international tourism.

From March 27, Singapore Airlines doubled its frequency on the route between Singapore and HCMC to 21 weekly flights.

Earlier, the carrier operated 11 weekly flights between the two cities.

In addition, it also resumed air services between Singapore and Da Nang, a popular tourist hub in central Vietnam, with seven flights a week. The first flight landed at Da Nang International Airport on Sunday.

Doha-based carrier Qatar Airways announced it will increase the frequency of its route connecting Doha and HCMC to five flights a week from April 12.

It currently operates three weekly flights from Doha to HCMC and Hanoi each.

Vietnam gave foreign tourists quarantine-free entry from March 15 after nearly two years of border closures.

Foreigners entering Vietnam only need to furnish a negative Covid-19 test certificate.

Quarantine, testing issues resolved, travel firms spring into action

With several uncertainties regarding quarantine and Covid-19 testing rules resolved Wednesday, travel firms have lost no time in contacting customers and getting foreign tourists to visit Vietnam.

Soon after the Ministry of Health announced Wednesday that it was lifting self-quarantine for foreign tourists entering the country with negative Covid test results, Pham Ha, CEO of Lux Group, contacted 80 groups of European tourists who’d canceled their tours to Vietnam since 2020 due to travel restrictions.

Ha said a group of Australian tourists was scheduled to visit Vietnam in May while tourists from France, Germany, and Spain would visit this summer.

Bui Quoc Dai, a representative of tour operator Annex Vietnam, which specializes in bringing Russian tourists to Khanh Hoa on the central coast, said he was happy with Vietnam’s latest open tourism policies.

Dai said his company would work with partners to bring back Russian tourists as soon as possible.

“Despite the escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, my company is expecting to bring the first group of Russian tourists back to Khanh Hoa in early April,” he said.

Nguyen Nguyet Van Khanh, deputy marketing head at major travel firm Vietravel, said Vietnam’s new entry rules were “reasonable” as many regional countries have reopened their borders with similar policies.

Her company was working with partners in Cambodia, Thailand, Singapore, France, and the U.S. to prepare the launch of new tourism products, she said.

“If everything goes well, my company will bring international tourists to Vietnam from later this month,” she added.

Vietnam fully reopened its borders Tuesday after nearly two years of closure. It has also resumed its unilateral visa exemption policy for citizens from 13 countries, including several European economies, Japan and South Korea.

Authorities in Kien Giang Province, home to Phu Quoc, have approved Vietjet Air’s proposal to fly 209 South Koreans to the island this Saturday under a vaccine passport program.

They would be among the first foreign tourists visiting Vietnam after nearly two years since the country closed its borders and canceled all international flights in March last year due to the pandemic.

Flight VJ3749 departing from South Korea’s Incheon International Airport is scheduled to land at Phu Quoc International Airport at noon, with the tourists accommodated at Vinpearl Resort and Spa Phu Quoc for four days and three nights, the government’s news portal reported.

During their holiday, they would visit tourist attractions like VinWonder Amusement Park, Vinpearl Safari, Vinpearl Golf, Corona Casino, and GrandWorld Complex.

All need to furnish certificates showing they are fully vaccinated or have recovered from Covid and tested negative within 72 hours before departure from South Korea.

They are required to install the IGOVN and PC-Covid health declaration applications on their smartphones while in Vietnam.

They would undergo rapid Covid testing on the first day of arrival and the final day before leaving Phu Quoc.

After welcoming the first group of South Koreans this Saturday, Phu Quoc plans to receive 20 international flights a month in the coming time.

Kien Giang is one of five localities to get the green light from the government to welcome back fully immunized tourists from November onwards along with Quang Nam, Khanh Hoa, Quang Ninh, and Da Nang.

On Thursday last week, Khanh Hoa Province, home to famous tourist hotspots Nha Trang and Cam Ranh, welcomed two flights from South Korea and Japan carrying a total of 429 passengers.
