Ethnic Minorities in Sapa | The H'mong

One of the main reasons travellers flock to Sapa are its diverse array of ethnic minorities. These groups and villages form a rich tapestry of cultures, with the gorgeous nature and scenery of the region acting as a back and canvas for this wealth of traditional culture and lifestyles.

The H’mong represent the largest ethnic group in Sapa, making up slightly more than half the total population of the district.
Economically, the H’mong rely heavily on agriculture and animal husbandry, and have mastered techniques for farming in the difficult and mountainous terrain by focusing on maize, wheat and barley in terraced fields.

Besides farming, the H’mong are also renowned for their weaving, producing distinctive and colourful garments that have become a signature of their culture. The specific details of these often vary considerably between subgroups, with the Black H’mong known for their indigo-dyed h**p clothing, whereas the Flower H’mong live up to their name with a more colourful and extravagantly decorated style.

Sapa Travel Guide
Choice views of the Muong Hoa valley and Mount Fansipan are the prime commodity on sale in Lao Cai's signature destination, Sapa, a hill station high in the mountains and a vestige of the French colonial era.
Sapa ranks along Ha Long Bay and Hoi An in terms of attracting tourists solely on the merit of its natural beauty and surrounding attractions. It's particularly rich in opportunities for treks, homestays and (on clear days) the kinds of panoramic views that leave travel writers searching for fresh adjectives and a larger camera memory card.

The Weather in Sapa

Sapa’s climate can be classified as sup-tropical, with generally cooler weather than the rest of Vietnam due to its position in the far north as well as its high elevation. The hottest weather arrives in July and August, with temperatures averaging at about 20 degrees Celsius, and high levels of humidity and rain. On the opposite end of the scale, January and February bring temperatures averaging at around 8-9 degrees Celsius, and even occasionally feature snowfall. During winter the area is also prone to fog and mist, which presents a double edged sword for travellers, as while it may detract from the views, it shrouds the town and valley in a gorgeous and deeply mystical air.

Peak tourist season in Sapa runs from June to August, when the weather is at its hottest. The months of April-June and September-November also have generally favourable conditions, and you can expect far fewer tourist crowds during these months. April and May in particular are great months to visit, as the rice fields will all be a bright verdant green, and the same goes for September, when they turn a rich gold as harvest approaches.

Series: Behind the Stunning Charm
Part 3: Ham Rong Mountain

Ham Rong Mountain, right next to Sapa town center, is a famous eco-tourist site in Sapa, Vietnam that attracts millions of visitors each year. The place is well-known for its beauty and fascinating and thrilling legends.

Legend has it that in the distance past, all animals lived together in a chaotic environment. One day, Jade Emperor gave an order that every species of animal had to find for them an area to live. Having heard the order, they scrambled for a place to reside. The three brothers of dragon who were living in a large lake hurriedly ran to the east but could not find any place; they then ran tothe west. The two older brothers ran fast and came to the destination first. The youngest brother ran slowly and strayed into the crowds of lions, tigers and big cats. Fearing that these animals would attack it, the dragon opened its mouth to defense itself. At that time, the order of Jade Emperor was no longer available, so the three dragons petrified. The two older dragons, which were waiting for their brother, face Lao Cai City, and the youngest one raising its head and opening mouth faces the Hoang Lien Mountain Range. So the mountain is named Ham Rong (Jaw of Dragon).

Another side, many people find Ham Rong Mountain has a legend which is much more interesting and romantic. Legend has it that, once upon a time, the place was a home of a dragon couple. They love each other so passionately that they were always together. One time, they were suddenly struck by a great flood when they were playing. All things were sunk under the water. Though the male dragon luckily escaped thanks to his strength, the female was so exhausted. She fell into the water, raising her head towards her partner who were flying to heaven. Over time, her body turned into the majestic Hoang Lien Son range while her head turned into the Ham Rong mountain.

Now the mountain is home to many different types of flora. On the way to the top of Ham Rong mountain, you can discover up to 6000 orchid vegetation belonging to 194 kinds. There are also a lot of wild and unique flowers grown alongside the paths like cherry blossom, hydrangea, geraniums, Lily of the Nile,… Besides, you also have a chance to taste many kinds of Sapa fruits like peach, plum, and pear. Ham Rong mountain looks like a heaven on the earth surrounded by the drifting clouds and echo sound from Mong boys’ bamboo flute.

Series: Behind the Stunning Charm
Part 2: The Cave of Fairies

The Cave of Fairies is related to the myth about three fairies asking their father, the king of Heaven, to let them go down to the earth for one day.

Legend has it that enchanted by the beauty of the earth, they turned out to forget their obligation to return to heaven. As a result, the kind got furious; he told another god called Thien Loi to seek and punish them. At first, the fairies hid in a cave 200 meter high above the sea level, but they could not get away from Thien Loi. He stepped on the mountain, breaking a part of it into pieces. Knowing that they could never escape and their father would never forgive them, the three fairies jumped off the cave. The river carried their bodies to its lower course, where we find Bao Nhai district nowadays.

Nowadays, inside the Cave of Fairies, the Stream of Fairies flows ethereally down from above like a strip of silk. Like a skillful sculptor, the water turned the stones inside the cave into a collection of beautiful and creative artworks: an elephant drinking water, a flying eagle, etc. About 200m away from the Stream of Fairy, there is another huge cave where stones lay on one another in layer to create a spectacular maze. Walking on for 500m, visitors can spot the sparkling stalactite towers of different sizes reflecting the lights from outside of the cave. After visiting the cave, visitors can swim in the sunshine of Floral Island, a small island on the side of the mountain.

If you happen to want beauty, resilience and wealth to come to you, do not forget to ask the fairies to give you all of those when visiting the Cave of Fairies, your wishes will come true.

Series: Behind the Stunning Charm
Part 1: Love Waterfall in Sapa

Talking about Sapa, travelers often remember its peaceful fresh atmosphere, terrace fields stretching from mountain to mountain or colorful valleys while many others memorize romantic waterfalls, and Love Waterfall is the outstanding one.

Located in San Sa Ho Commune with 4km to the Northwest of Sapa Town, Love Waterfall deserves to be a must-see in this allured town. The name of this waterfall, Love, originates from a legendary love story that has been told to generations in this land. The story tells that long time ago, this waterfall was the bathing place of fairies from heaven. One day, a fairy was mesmerized by flute sound of a young boy near the fall, so she spent every night listening to his melodies. Not long time after, her parentscame to know the secret, and forbade her from coming back to the fall. The passionate fairy transformed herself to a bird so that she could live with her love forever. From then on, the name Love is born.

Travelling on a soil road offragrantflower on the two sides of it to the fall, tourists might be more and more curious about how beautiful the waterfall is. From far sight, Love Waterfall looks like a sparkling stream of light.

It has a height of about 100m, and starts from the peak of Fansipan Mountain and rush noisily into the Gold Stream like a never-ending song. Under the waterfall, the Gold Stream runs along with green grass plots and bamboo clusters, forming a poetic image. The stream flows to the forest endlessly, to some places that only passionate people dare to venture into.

Handicraft of Sapa

In Sa Pa, clothes, basketwork, metal and wooden objects, jewellery, pottery, etc, were made locally according to techniques that were often specific to an area or an ethnic group. These objects are still made today for family use and occasionally offered for sale.

– Fibres: h**p, cotton and silk dyed with natural dyes
The Tày grow cotton, spin it, weave it, and dye it to make the traditional blankets for the wedding dowries. The Hmong grow h**p and use its strong fibres to make their clothes, which they dye with indigo. In certain villages, people raise silkworms to make the beautiful silk thread they use to embroider their clothes. The Dao (Mien) women and the Hmong make veritable pictures with their incredibly precise embroideries. Lots of traditional fabrics can be found in the SaPa and Bac Ha ethnic markets. Most of the patterns embroidered by the Hmong and the Dao or woven by the Tay and the Thai carry a meaning. They often symbolise a baby, a tree, a bird, a snail, the moon, etc.

– Basketwork: from forest to kitchen
Rattan and bamboo are the raw materials used for basketwork. Each ethnic group and each area has its own techniques and own patterns. The Tays’ are square-shaped, often decorated with floral patterns, while the Dao’s (Mien) and the Lao’s are raised designs with colour strokes.
For their domestic use, the Nung and the Tay make very fine baskets for sorting rice or legumes. In order to protect them, they store them over the wood fire where the smoke makes them more resistant. The Vietnamese shoulder piece is the most popular carrying device in the lowlands, while the back-basket is found everywhere in the mountains.

– Wood, steel and silver: traditional skills, still unrecognised
Thanks to the wide diversity of wood species and to the carpenters and joiners’ know-how, the houses, furniture and all the wooden objects are still made locally. One of the most famous wood species in the Lao Cai area is peumou (Fokienia Hodginsii), a species of slow-growing cypress whose wood is rot-proof. Chinese buyers have been paying a heavy price for it for over a century.
Using reclaimed materials, blacksmiths used to make ploughshares, knives and trivets. Despite the competition of industrial products, the high-quality knives and pruning knives made by the Hmong are still much sought-after by farmers from all ethnic groups.
Silver jewellery is still made by numerous ethnic groups. The Hmong from SaPa and the Dao are renowned for their necklaces consisting of several silver circles put together – the weight of the jewel is also a wealth and status symbol as silver metal used to be one of the main ways of hoarding wealth. The Tày from Văn Bàn make beautiful silver bangles. Depending on the area and on the subgroups they belong to, the Hmong and the Dao are distinguished by the shape of their earrings.

– Incense
Virtually all ethnic groups produce their own particular sort of incense. The Tày from Van Ban (Văn Bàn), use powdered cinnamon bark to make a brown incense with a warm, sweet fragrance. The Pa Zi from Muong Khuong make pale green incense out of powdered wild leaves, whose fragrance is greener and a little sharp. The Hmong from Bac Ha gather tree bark to make ochre-coloured incense with a powerful scent.
