According to Vietnamese folklore, every year on the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month, it is the day when the Kitchen Gods, known as Táo quân, ride on carp to heaven to report all the happenings, big and small, in each household to the Jade Emperor. Therefore, on this day, Vietnamese families often prepare a feast to send off the Kitchen Gods.
In 2024, the Kitchen Gods will be worshipped on February 2, 2024, according to the Gregorian calendar.
The Kitchen Gods are believed to oversee all activities within a household and also ward off evil spirits, ensuring peace for the inhabitants. On the 23rd day of the twelfth lunar month each year, the Kitchen Gods ride on carp, transforming into dragons, to ascend to the Heavenly Palace. There, they report all the good and bad deeds of the family over the past year, allowing the Heavenly Palace to pass judgment and mete out rewards or punishments. It is only on the eve of the Lunar New Year that the Kitchen Gods return to the earthly realm to continue their duties of safeguarding the family hearth.
The tradition of honoring the Kitchen Gods has deep roots in the consciousness of the Vietnamese people. On this day, families prepare a special meal to express gratitude to the deities and release carp into bodies of water as a symbolic gesture of sending the Kitchen Gods to heaven. Additionally, it serves as an opportunity for families to reunite and bond after a year of hard work.
The ritual of worshipping the Kitchen Gods is a beautiful cultural tradition imbued with spiritual significance, aiming to bring peace to the people of Vietnam. Through this article, it is hoped that readers gain a better understanding of the origin and meaning of this longstanding custom.
