✨ Meet Lucia Griggi – One of our photography competition judges ✨

When judging photos, Lucia looks for a few essential qualities that elevate an image:

▪️Composition & Detail – Thoughtful framing, balance, and attention to clean, distraction-free details.
▪️Emotional Impact – A photo that stirs emotions or tells a powerful story always stands out.
▪️Creativity & Originality – Fresh perspectives or unique approaches make an image truly memorable.
▪️Technical Skill – Sharp focus, perfect exposure, and skillful use of light are a must.
▪️Effective Post-Processing – Editing that enhances the image without overwhelming it.
▪️Subtlety & Ambiguity – Images with mystery or open interpretation that invite viewers to look closer and reflect.

We can’t wait to see how you incorporate these qualities into your entries! 🌟 Stay tuned for more judge introductions and competition updates!

Photo Tip of the Month by Alan Hewitt Photography 📷

"Mastering animal behavior means anticipating the drama in every moment—even a yawn! Lions yawn in readiness for action such as a hunt, and to communicate readiness with their pride. Hippos use yawns to show power and territorial dominance. Both revealing their impressive teeth and tusks. Predicting these actions can help you capture stunning, dramatic shots. Use burst mode and be ready to snap the perfect moment!" 🦛📷

Sub-adult male lion, he's proving that males can actually multi-task!

This was one of many wonderful moments this year on our photography safaris. We were in Tuli Wilderness, Botswana where I was leading the Penda Photo Tours safari there. We had seen this pride earlier in the day and decided to head back later in the afternoon when it cooled down and the light was less harsh. As we did, they joined us on the track walking straight towards us then around our vehicle....

This photograph was taken with the Fujifilm UK & Ireland GFX100SII and Fujifilm X South Africa GF500mm. Due to a few computer related issues I've struggled to get any of the 2000+ GFX raw files looked at. But, I'm glad to say this should be corrected in the next few days and I'll be pleased to havea proper look at them, watch this space! 😎

Oh, and we;ll have two trips there in 2025, one in May visiting two different camps in the same area albeit in fascinatingly different habitats! We'll also be there in July too. Head to the Penda Photo Tours website for more info or please feel free to ask me!

“During my time in Zambia, I saw firsthand how images can transform narratives, providing nonprofits with the visual content needed to raise awareness and funds. This experience reinforced my belief in photography as a catalyst for change, highlighting the responsibility we have as photographers to represent subjects authentically and respectfully.” ✨

Heulwyn Roberts - a professional photographer from the UK - joined our nonprofit photography workshop in Livingstone, Zambia recently, and was kind enough to share some experiences and images on our blog. (Thanks Heulwyn! 🙏🏻)

“The trip wasn’t anything like I expected, in the best way possible. I had no idea how much I would fall in love with the Maasai Mara, and what shocked me most was how much I connected with the Maasai people. I went on this trip to further my wildlife photography, but I took back home with me so much more than that. The stories that the Maasai shared with us changed the way that I think about and appreciate my own life and the relationships I hold. We were fortunate enough to be invited into the home of a Maasai family – something I had no idea we would be able to do on the program. They welcomed our questions about Maasai culture over a cup of tea and a fire within walls made of sticks and mud. Despite the insane wildlife sightings we were lucky enough to encounter on the program, those profound moments of hearing about how technology and tourism impacts the local communities are what have stuck with me most from the program.”

New on our blog; an interview with - who recently joined us in Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Hunter spoke about his experience, and shared some of his stunning images. Have a look!
