Lion sightings on a game drive are always interesting and special, particularly male lions can be rare. A small pride with cubs is extra special. Out in the open, playing and interacting with each other.

So many game sightings, so many photo opportunities on the game drives, the big and the small. The leopard in the tree, the lion pride, the elephant at the watering hole are amazing but also the go away birds, sunbirds and crested barbet.

Guided walks on safari are such a fantastic way to get a better understanding of the bush environment, the little things in nature and how the natural environment works. These brilliant field guides have such great skills, knowledge and understanding. You probably not going to get close to the big game, but you will emerge with a new perspective.

Safaris are often focused on the experience of seeing the recognized 'big five', there are however very special and unique experiences that leave a lasting impression. One of those is to come across a pack of endangered wild dogs. It is not often that we see these amazing animals and to do it on the very first game drive was just amazing. To see the interaction of pack among themselves and then with the hyena was interesting.

From the surprising and fascinating beach night walk with specialist marine guide, Judy Dixon, to the absorbing forest walk with her son Mark, this is such a thought provoking experience. You come away with an expanded understanding of nature and how it interacts. Massive fallen trees that have a positive impact on the future of the forest and tiny ploughshells that consume jellyfish are all part of the cycle of life. The Sedgefield Estuary and Knysna Forests are just a small part of the scenic Garden Route.

Up close to the southern right whale in Walker Bay with Southern Right Charters. After the fairly stormy weather in the previous few weeks in Cape Town it was a fantastic to have a perfect day to go out and find these incredible mammals. The southern wright's migrate to this coast between July and October to calve and breed, so it was a great privilege to view a mother and calf. We also saw a Brydes whale and a very brief glimpse of the humpback. They can also often be seen close in shore from the Cliff Path hiking trail.

There was so much variation in this day of the itinerary, mainly focused on a hike on the magnificent Boschendal Wine Estate followed by wine tasting at the same venue. By chance the Franschhoek Bastille Festival had been moved to this weekend due to weather related delays and we were able to browse the special craft and food market in the afternoon.

Time spent in Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens is always special. These gardens are rated as one of the top seven in the world and showcase the incredible diversity of the Cape Floristic Region. This year we got to see the Gardens from a slightly different perspective, walking in from Constantia, as an alternative to going up Table Mountain, due closure for cableway maintenance. An extra bonus was the king protea, (Protea cynaroides), South Africa’s national flower, putting on a magnificent display.

After considerable rain in Cape Town the week before we were lucky to have a perfect day for our visit to the Cape of Good Hope. The 1.5 mile (2.5km) walk was just perfect for the conditions with spectacular views and even the gift of a rainbow.

The Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve is located at the southern end of Cape Peninsula, a rugged finger of rocky peaks and valleys stretching into the Atlantic Ocean for about 80km from the city centre of Cape Town, culminating at Cape Point, with its impressive cliff faces and historic lighthouse. Our tour included the Boulders Penguin Colony and a short walk from the Cape of Good Hope to Cape Point. Sailors of the 16th and 17th century regarded this as point at which they had 'rounded' Africa on their journey to the East.
