Today is a day to honor the father of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, on his birthday, July 18th. This special day was established by the United Nations in November 2009, with the inaugural UN Mandela Day taking place on July 18, 2010.

As South Africans, we reflect on his enduring legacy by dedicating ourselves to 67 minutes of service and kindness. 67 minutes for the 67 years he devoted to the struggle of equality in South Africa. Ethnography is a branch of anthropology. A systematic study of individual cultures and ethnicities, and when this research is conducted using photography, video, or film it is called Visual Ethnography.

This week we dive into the fascinating world of Ethnographic Art with our Winelands art specialist. Based at “The Gallery” , specializing in African Ethnographic art, she draws a parallel between the alluring narrative of the Akua’ba fertility doll to the modern-day discourse of Citizen Journalism. After successfully bearing a child the commissioned dolls are returned to the commissioner (Priest or Shaman) who will then display all the dolls as a testament to their power and abilities. She draws a comparison between the Priests' display of power to our current-day discourse of advertising, ie. social media, and compares its ability to retain an ethnographic record.
