Europe delays charging non-EU travelers for entry until November 2023

The European Union has postponed introducing its new travel authorization system until November 2023. As part of the scheme, some visitors who live outside the EU will have to register and pay a €7 fee.
The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) was initially slated to be rolled out in 2021 before being pushed out to May 2023. However, a recent report from the European Commission said it now won't be fully operational until November 2023.

When it was first announced in 2019, reports around the world referred to the new system as a 'visa,' which the European Commission was quick to point out is incorrect. More than 60 countries have visa-free access to the European Union, which won't change.

But residents of those countries, including the US, the UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, Israel, Singapore, Mexico, and more, will have to register to enter the EU under the ETIAS scheme starting next year and pay €7.

Residents of countries that need a visa to enter the EU for short-term stays are exempt from the new scheme.

Cheapest holiday destination around the world, from Cape Town to the Costa del Sol

Cape Town in South Africa has been named the cheapest holiday destination in the world, according to a new study.

Post Office Travel Money has revealed its 17th annual report, which compares the cost of eight travel items in 40 of the world’s most popular holiday destinations in a bid to rank the best-value locations for UK travellers across the globe.

Items assessed include the average price of a cup of coffee, a bottle of beer, a glass of cola, a 1.5L bottle of water, a glass of wine, a 200ml bottle of suncream, a bottle of insect repellent, and a three-course meal with a bottle of wine, to create a cumulative total.

Boosted by the South African rand’s sharp fall of almost 16 per cent against sterling in recent months and keen pricing in restaurants and bars, Cape Town has emerged as the best-value destination, up from fourth place a year ago.

A fall in prices of 8.4 per cent means that it’s the cheapest place in the world to get a three-course meal (£35.48) according to the Post Office study. Meanwhile, Reykjavek in Iceland ranked last – the most expensive destination surveyed – with an equivalent meal costing £135.87.

Corsica, France

Corsica’s Rencontres Polyphoniques de Calvi is one of those tiny cultural pearls that makes a trip to the old citadel of Calvi in mid-September utterly unique, as choristers and soloists from around the world join the A Filetta polyphonic choir in making the most of their cathedral setting.

By day, take the opportunity to explore the rest of the citadel, whose Genoese construction helped Calvi resist French control up until the 18th century. The former governor’s palace is particularly impressive and has a fine museum on the city.

It’s also a great time to visit if you want to take on any part of the GR20 – one of Europe’s toughest but most rewarding trails. The cooler weather of autumn makes this the perfect season to wander Corsica’s glacial lakes and imposing peaks before winter seals off many of the higher passes.

Like many popular European hot spots, Sicily is still warm in September, yet less oppressively hot, cooler in the evenings and less busy thanks to the summer holidays drawing to a close. The former is where you can find the must-visit Greek-Roman theatre: the view here is one of the most striking with Mount Etna on the horizon. For more Greek ruins, the Valle dei Templ (Valley of Temples) in Agrigento is one of world's finest archaeological examples of ancient art and architecture.

It doesn't matter where you end up on the island: you'll be able to end each day by parking yourself outside a classic Sicilian eatery to enjoy the hazy late summer evening.
