Krantzkloof Nature Reserve Opening Information

The moment we've all been waiting for is finally here!

Krantzkloof Nature Reserve is thrilled to announce its long-anticipated reopening on Monday 11 December 2023.

Please be aware that we are currently facing certain challenges, including temporary staff shortages, and this may impact the usual operations of the reserve and some trails may be temporarily limited or closed.

P̲l̲e̲a̲s̲e̲ ̲r̲e̲a̲d̲ ̲a̲n̲d̲ ̲r̲e̲s̲p̲e̲c̲t̲ ̲t̲h̲e̲ ̲i̲n̲f̲o̲r̲m̲a̲t̲i̲o̲n̲ ̲p̲r̲o̲v̲i̲d̲e̲d̲ ̲o̲n̲ ̲s̲i̲g̲n̲b̲o̲a̲r̲d̲s̲ ̲p̲l̲a̲c̲e̲d̲ ̲t̲h̲r̲o̲u̲g̲h̲o̲u̲t̲ ̲t̲h̲e̲ ̲r̲e̲s̲e̲r̲v̲e̲. These guidelines are essential for your safety and the well-being of the reserve.

Here are the details you need to know:

1. Entrance Update:

• O̲n̲l̲y̲ ̲K̲l̲o̲o̲f̲ ̲F̲a̲l̲l̲s̲ ̲R̲o̲a̲d̲ ̲e̲n̲t̲r̲a̲n̲c̲e̲ ̲i̲s̲ ̲c̲u̲r̲r̲e̲n̲t̲l̲y̲ ̲o̲p̲e̲n̲ - please use this entrance to access the reserve. Entry via alternative access points (eg Acutts Drive) is not permitted and could result in prosecution.

• Due to ongoing staff challenges, the Nkutu Entrance and Picnic Site in Valley Drive are currently closed, but are expected to reopen in the new year.

• Entry into the reserve is only from 06h00 to 13h00 daily and is subject to space availability. All visitors are required to leave by 18h00. This ensures everyone has ample time to enjoy the beauty of the reserve.

• Entrance Fee is R60 for adults (12 years and older) & R30 for children (under 12 years). For your safety and convenience, we encourage visitors to use d̲e̲b̲i̲t̲/̲c̲r̲e̲d̲i̲t̲ ̲c̲a̲r̲d̲s̲ for entrance fee payments. E̲z̲e̲m̲v̲e̲l̲o̲ ̲R̲h̲i̲n̲o̲ ̲C̲a̲r̲d̲ is also accepted, but SanParks Wild Card is not accepted.

2. Limited Parking & Visitor Numbers:

Due to limited parking & picnic site availability, numbers are restricted to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all. Please be patient as we manage entry based on space availability. Parking on the road verge outside the Reserve is NOT permitted and no entry will be granted to visitors parked outside the reserve.

3. No Alcohol Policy:

Please be aware that bringing or consuming alcoholic beverages within the reserve is not permitted. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in adhering to this policy.

4. Trail Availability:

While many trails are open, please note that some trails may remain closed temporarily. We are actively working to reopen all trails as soon as possible. Please respect any No Entry signs you may encounter on the trails! For safety reasons trails to the bottom of the gorge will not be open on rainy days.

5. Be Prepared:

As you embark on your exploration of Krantzkloof Nature Reserve, it's essential to equip yourself with the right gear for a safe and enjoyable hiking experience. Here's a checklist of the correct hiking gear to ensure you make the most of your time amidst the natural wonders:

1. Hiking Footwear: Sturdy and comfortable hiking footwear with good traction is a must. The trails may vary, and proper footwear provides stability and support.

2. Weather-Appropriate Clothing: Dress in layers, considering the weather conditions. Bring a lightweight, moisture-wicking shirt, a windbreaker or rain jacket, and a hat to protect against the sun.

3. Backpack: Carry a backpack to store essentials such as water, snacks, a first aid kit, and any additional clothing layers. Ensure the backpack is comfortable and well-fitted. Empty food and drink packaging should be placed in the backpack and disposed of in a bin back at the picnic area.

4. Water Bottle: Hydration is key - bring a reusable water bottle and stay hydrated throughout your hike. Consider the duration of your hike and bring an adequate amount of water.

5. Navigation Tools: A online version of the Krantzkloof trail map and a GPS device to navigate the trails.

6. Snacks: Pack energy-boosting snacks like trail mix, granola bars, or fresh fruits to keep you fueled during your hike.

7. Sun Protection: Wear sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect yourself from the sun's rays. Even on overcast days, UV rays can be strong.

8. First Aid Kit: A basic first aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any necessary personal medications is essential.

9. Insect Repellent: If you're exploring areas with dense vegetation, bring insect repellent to ward off mosquitoes and other insects.

10. Camera/Phone: Capture the beauty of Krantzkloof with a camera or your smartphone. Ensure your phone is fully charged and consider bringing a portable charger.

11. Wildlife Observation Gear: Binoculars and a field guide can enhance your wildlife viewing experience. Krantzkloof is home to a wide and diverse flora and fauna.

12. Trash Bag: Bring a small trash bag in your backpack to collect any waste generated during your hike. This ensures easy disposal at designated bins.

13. Emergency Contact Number: - Familiarize yourself with the emergency contact number 031 941 4070 and share it with your fellow visitors. Safety is a collective responsibility, and your prompt action can make a significant difference.

14. Weather: Remember to check the weather forecast before your hike and inform someone of your plans, especially if you're hiking alone. Always prioritize safety and leave no trace by respecting the natural environment.

Recognize that the reserve may be operating with limited resources, impacting services and access. Cooperation from visitors ensures a harmonious and enjoyable experience for all. If you have a positive experience, consider sharing your feedback with us via our website – https://kknr.org.za.

Thank You and Enjoy Your Visit!

Earth Day is an annual event on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection & create awareness about issues, including pollution, deforestation & global warming.

Our annual Welcoming of the Whales Festival creates the platform for education & awareness to the protection of our oceans.

The festival highlights the protection of the Humpback Whale Migration & recent surveys have estimated that the humpback whale population that migrate past Durban have increased from the mere 340 individuals to approximately 7000 individuals - an incredible recovery of approximately 90% of the original pre-exploitation stock!

We look forward to welcoming you to this years festival 🐋

Greetings beautiful people! 🌸

Please may we ask that you take two minutes to vote for us (Travel Bug Tours) in the inaugural Durban Tourism Awards.

It has been a tough 2 years. Gruelling lockdowns at home and the complete interruption of international travel to South Africa nearly destroyed the local tourism industry with many tour operators having to sell vehicles and retrench staff.

Durban Tourism has partnered with local government and private stakeholders to put together the very first Durban Tourism Awards, the first city-based awards of its kind in the country, to honour operators, guides and accommodation establishments who have weathered the storm and are still flying our flag high! 🇿🇦

Had my last on-air call with Nedbank and 702 Cape Talk Radio this morning as one of their Hands Up for Small Business awardees.

The experience was brilliant! It gave me hope that Travel Bug Tours and the tourism industry as a whole will weather this seemingly endless storm and come out more resilient than ever!

You don't need to travel very far into KZN to see the wildlife!

This little Painted Reed Frog was trying its best to blend into its surroundings at the airport. Yes, it's markings do resemble that of a well-known energy drink.
