The resilience of animals is truly astounding. Our Cape Leopard Trust camera traps have been picking up this female baboon with facial scarring, missing her tail and one hand. We can’t be sure how it happened – a failed attack by a leopard is certainly a possibility. But in spite of her handicap, she was recently photographed with a small baby and she seems quite at ease with the job! How amazing!

What a lucky shot of a pair of Cape large-spotted genets! This species (Genetta tigrina ~ grootkol muskeljaatkat) is solitary so capturing two together is rather special. Genets play an important ecosystem role by preying on rodents and other small mammals, and also promoting seed dispersal due to their omnivorous diet. They are opportunistic feeders and are often seen around campsites and homes on the urban edge, where they will scavenge on left-overs and even pet food. Genets can and do catch poultry, so it is important to secure hen-houses and chicken coops to ensure that these successful little hunters (along with caracals, mongooses and even otters) cannot gain entry.

The idea of a dam on top of a mountain seems to defy logic, doesn’t it? Well, one only has to explore the upper reaches of Table Mountain to discover that it’s entirely possible. Our Mother City’s magnificent mount has five dams dotted across its tabletop, the first of which was built way back...

THE BLYDE RIVER CANYON The third largest and only green Canyon in the world. For me, a hidden treasure and best kept secret of the natural world. I sat atop the mountain for hours making various images. A troop of Sykes monkeys came swinging through the canopy. Their calls were so loud it was echoing all across that landscape; a sound I won't forget, quite incredible. Later in the afternoon, I heard a leopard, very close. That was a little scary. To be up there alone when with a hidden leopard making coughing / sawing sounds not more than 100m away, certainly heightens the senses!
