How to enjoy Hermanus in 10,000 Steps a Day? Easy. Get up, put your tackies on and get going. Making your way up Hoys Koppie is a lite, feint hearted friendly little challenge and provides a bird’s eye view of our little town. When ‘down to earth’ again it’s plain walking from there on. Make Gearing’s point your next stop ... Enjoy the seaview and the new FynArts Collection of Art on the Cliff ... from here you can choose a water or take away coffee pitstop. By the time you’ve crisscrossed town, discovering shops and restaurants you never knew about you’ll find you’ve done 10,000 steps without a huff and a puff. Why not wander in the direction of the tidal pool at the Marine Hotel and from there take on the cliff-path? If running out of time make your way back to the car or accommodation and plan the next day’s route! The best way to get to know a town is by walking it. Right now is a good time to put a spring in your step to help reduce those Lockdown centimeters because Spring ‘20 is just around the next corner. PS: 10,000 steps is only a number and 20,000+ steps a day is easier done than said.

He’s happy the lagoon is open, restaurants are open to serve wine, guesthouses are open - his whole town is open - and FynArts’ new Art on the Cliffpath opened this weekend. Most importantly? Hermanus Peoples’ minds are open, as usual. Time to book a breakaway ...

Despite the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic and government’s stringent lockdown regulations there’s no holding back The Southern Right Whales! As can be expected, they’ve arrived and awaiting the ooh’s and ah’s and to entertain the tourist fans they’ve become accustomed to. And, of course, the thousands of free photo opportunities!

Hermanus is ready! With all the necessary hygiene and safety protocols in place, it is with open arms the local hospitality industry invites its friends, families and national tourists to visit. United in applauding the relaxation of regulations, local businesses and families welcome fans of Hermanus from all corners of South Africa. “We miss you and look forward to seeing you back to our town!” says Frieda Lloyd, Cape Whale Coast Tourism Manager.

Hermanus is world renowned as one of the best whale watching spots on the planet, allowing you to get close to these massive animals on a boat tour, by kayak or just watching them from the shore. For those who are yet to visit Hermanus during Whale Season, there’s no better time than the first time. An experience you’ll never forget!

Hermanus is a tourist destination where its peoples and businesses rely on Capetonians and citizens of surrounding towns to explore beyond their own neighbourhoods. Guesthouses, restaurants, breweries* and wineries* – business owners from all walks of life – awaits, presenting their offerings and the diversity and natural beauty of our region to be discovered.

A short road trip offers irresistibly beautiful and mindful experiences beyond just whale watching. There are great art galleries, markets, beer* and wine* tastings to prospect. Bookshops, antique shops and vintage treasure troves in which to get lost in time ... Cliff paths, hikes, trails and reserves to traverse. Not to mention abalone farm tours, strolling our lovely beaches or just chilling glass in hand enjoying our magic sunsets and a great deal more!

In short, great personal care has gone into ensuring visitors’ enjoyment and safety throughout Hermanus town. This last two weeks, a team of business owners got together to produce a ginormous banner made from white table cloths and bed linen to be displayed at the popular Gearings Point whale watching spot. Why you may ask? To show how much we miss you and how much we care ...*If not on your next visit, it won’t be long before wine and beer will be back in on the menu! Cheers

I Love Hermanus is Back!

And so is Tanya Tiefenthaler, Founder and Editor of I Love Hermanus ... “From where I’m sitting in the UK, witnessing the strain our town suffers as a result of the pandemic is saddening. I’ve been working abroad for the last two years during which time the page activity came to a stand-still. To dust off and restore I Love Hermanus I’m now working with a team to bring back the page to help increase our town’s top of mind awareness amongst its 25,000+ followers. I’ll be back in Hermanus towards the end of August, in the meantime, we’re proud to support Hermanus Tourism’s national campaign which breaks tomorrow, 7 August. Please make sure to like and share this upcoming post on our page in support of the good of Hermanus’ peoples and businesses. Our arms, hearts, and doors are open to welcoming both old and new visitors to our beautiful town.”

Whale Mystery :-)

Lurina Eykelenboom-Fourie photographed this scene from Gearings Point on the 08th of December last year and was wondering if anybody remembers this incident?

She writes " To me it seemed as if the boat was pulling a whale across the ocean. At first I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me, but the more I looked at what was happening, the more real it seemed. The distance between the boat and the whale remained the same and also the direction the boat and whale were moving as it passed from right to left, just like a truck and trailer. It was photographed from quite a distance and this is the clearest I could get it, but of you look closely, you'll notice a line passing the left engine, from the boat to the water. Can anyone maybe shed some light on the scene? My guess is that the whale died and it's being moved to another area, but I have no idea and would appreciate your insights"

I don't recall an incident like this but if you do please let us know.

Hermanus Fynarts (y)

'Traveller' by Jaco Sieberhagen must be one of the most photographed Sculpture on the cliffs ever. She certainly was one of my all time favourites and I can't wait to see what Fynarts has in store for Hermanus this year.

This beauty found a home at the Dutch Reformed Church Onrusrivier in Berg Street according to Karin de Bruin who says they enjoy her every day. So glad to hear it.

Green Mountain Trail (y)

The Green Mountain Trail is a moderate walking trail covering 57 km's in four days. This spectacular hike traverses a tapestry of fynbos, wine, olive and fruit farms with each days hike ending up at a four star country guesthouse/farm for the night. Delicious wholesome country food, local wine and a warm bed are your reward for a day spent hiking. In the Kogelberg Biosphere Reserve you can expect to see various small buck, numerous bird species and the most amazing fynbos. The Green Mountain Trail - a cut above the rest.

Voelklip Throwback :-)

This image of Voelklip cannot be very accurately dated but is believed to have been taken in the mid-1940s. Obviously, it is an aerial photograph taken from a plane flying from right to left across the scene.

In the foreground of the photo is the bathing beach between Voelklip and Nanny’s Beaches, empty on this day. The first house above the rocks was owned by the family van Blommestein who ran a flourishing butchery business in the town. (A butchery of the same name currently operates in Swartdam Road, but it is owned by another family).

In 1952 the Luyt family built the Birkenhead Hotel on this site, retaining as much as possible of the fishermen’s cottage. In turn, this hotel itself was demolished in 1969, and the site remained vacant until quite recently when two houses were built there. Even more recently these have been remodelled as the boutique hotel, Birkenhead House Hotel.

The flat area in the middle of the image is now a formal parking area, which leads into a series of steps leading down to the beach. The original changing booths can be seen on the far right. Looking inland, it is surprising how much undeveloped land still existed. Voelklip (or Mossel River, as it was known then) was proclaimed a township in the early years of the 20th century. Forty years later it appears to be less than a third developed. Now it is all houses.

I can only guess at the cause of the ‘cloud’ in the background. I believe that it is most likely a fire rather than a dust storm. The plane from which the photo was taken could have been involved in attempts to control the fire.

Nature Oddity (y)

This rare Southern double-collared sunbird, with a Copper instead of a Green iridescence, was captured by Craig Adam in the Fernkloof Nature Reserve a few years ago.

Craig uploaded the photo to the Animal Demography Units Virtual Museum under the 'Birds with Odd Plumage' tab which is slowly building up a remarkable collection of records featuring oddities of colouration, feathers and deformities in birds across the African continent.

The Virtual Museum (VM) provides a platform for citizen scientists to contribute to biodiversity projects. Members of the public are encouraged to submit digital photographs for the Virtual Museums listed on the website, along with certain basic information. Species identifications can be made by the observers, and are confirmed by a panel of experts.

Virtual Museum records help expand the distribution databases for these taxa and, they not only confirm the presence of a species at a particular point in time, but they also provide new distribution records for species and sometimes lead to extensions of the known range of a species

There are lots of Virtual Museums on the website. Have a browse and please feel free to upload any interesting photos you might have of birds, butterflies, scorpions, etc. The website can be accessed here: http://vmus.adu.org.za/
