Chantilly. This lovely venue just ten kilometres from Zinkwazi hosted the opening of a new Curry restaurant. Nirvana served a selection of authentic Indian dishes and Hansen’s music was very appreciated. A great day. Congratulations to Chantilly!

The little girl in this photograph is Ruby Crane.....from the age of 3 years old Ruby walked blinded soldiers around a rehabilitation centre called St Dunstans at Brighton in Sussex, where Rubys Father was the head gardener.

Ruby knew they were blinded and just returned from the first World War.....wandering in the grounds she would take hold their hand and ask them where they wanted to go ( individual workshops ) and guide them there.

People were so affected by little Ruby walking the blind soldiers around they would send her dolls and toys as a thank you for all the support she was giving to the men and women affected by sight loss.

Little Ruby was rewarded with a long life as she passed away in her late nineties, in 2011.

Ruby recalled..... " I always remember how my little hand seemed so small in their big hands....they were so pleased to have a child come and talk to them....it was something different away from the monotonous grind of not being able to see things, I think. "

Ruby was so popular that she featured on the front page of the St Dunstans first Annual Report for 1915/1916 and later Flag Day emblems incorporated a similar design that featured Little Ruby.

A must read:

Viktor Frankl, one of the great psychiatrists of the twentieth century, survived the death camps of N**i Germany. His little book, Man’s Search for Meaning, is one of those life-changing books that everyone should read.

Frankl once told the story of a woman who called him in the middle of the night to calmly inform him she was about to commit su***de. Frankl kept her on the phone and talked her through her depression, giving her reason after reason to carry on living. Finally she promised she would not take her life, and she kept her word.

When they later met, Frankl asked which reason had persuaded her to live?

"None of them", she told him.

What then influenced her to go on living, he pressed?

Her answer was simple, it was Frankl’s willingness to listen to her in the middle of the night. A world in which there was someone ready to listen to another's pain seemed to her a world in which it was worthwhile to live.

Often, it is not the brilliant argument that makes the difference. Sometimes the small act of listening is the greatest gift we can give.

In recent years, the precarious plight of the Pangolin - a shy but intelligent species, has been highlighted sadly due to its title of the world's most trafficked animal.
With four of the eight remaining species found in Africa, Zimbabwe has a strong no tolerance approach to Pangolin trafficking.

Our surrounding dune forest is inhabited by small creatures such as porcupine, genet, blue and red duiker and bush pigs which are active at night. Crested Guinea fowl and raptures are seen there in the day time.

All four bedrooms open onto decks which overlook the sea. To reach the beach a wooden walkway from the lower floor meanders through a little of the Coastal dune forest called the Admiralty reserve which is protected by the state along the Kzn coast.

I spent Saturday morning at Zinkwazi Beach which is a small town on the north coast of the KwaZulu-Natal, It is well known for its lagoon, which is an estuary of the Zinkwazi River.

Our sunny glass house is the place to be this chilly winter. Clear crisp sunny days on the deck have afforded beautiful views over the ocean. The whales are starting to return and dolphins seen frequently from the deck. We’ve had a steady flow of visitors from Gauteng. Along with walking on the beach or in our forest and village, they’ve been kept busy.
Caretaker Edward is holding the fort this August while Axon is on leave.
