As we left the park yesterday after our day trip around Malelane, we stopped on the Malelane Bridge for our guests to take some photos and look at the crocodiles, hippos, fish and amazing birdlife that you can see from the bridge.
Like always I started looking for interesting birds. I always first see if the pair of rare African Skimmers are at their usual spot, far down stream. As luck would have it, one of them was flying towards the bridge and I was able to get some snaps of this amazing bird skimming. Unfortunately he only did it a few times before returning to their usual spot, but this was the first time I witnessed them doing this so close by! Absolutely amazing!

A few day ago we were blessed with this epic cheetah sighting very early in the morning close to Crocodile Bridge Gate. Seeing cheetahs in the KNP is very special, their numbers are very low due to habitat restrictions & high densities of Leopard and Lion.

Bumke Family Trip Report
Day 5 of 6

It just keeps on getting better…

Our mission today was to find Rhino, however the weather was not in our favour. It was cold and very windy this morning which meant that finding rhino would prove to be a difficult task!

As expected, the first hour and a half did not deliver much, the weather was awful and the animals took cover in the thickets. Half way to where I wanted to go and look for rhino, I decided to deviate from the plan and go to an area which has more cover from the elements, figuring that the chances if finding rhino a little later would be better and see if there isn’t anything else hiding between some rocky outcrops for us to see. We found some nice general game there and a pair of klipspringer was definitely the highlite! After the klipspringer we decided its time for breakfast and coffee so we left them on the rocks. As we turned the next corner, 3 rhino were crossing the river bed! How awesome! I wasn’t expecting to see them there, but wow, what a nice surprise! These were the first rhinos we found and we were ecstatic! We continued on to go and warm up, but mother nature had other plans for us, and this time in the form of a Tusker!! What a specimen!! We spent some quality time with him but he wasn’t in the mood to turn towards us for a nice photo, but an amazing moment to enjoy nonetheless!

We then finally mad it to the picnic site and had our awesome breakfast and coffee! After breakfast we decided to take the long road back to camp. We just left when we spotted a few cars upfront… we approached and couldn’t believe our luck! A mating pair of lions! We enjoyed the show for about 35 minutes before continuing, stopping at some view points on our way back to camp.

We took a little break and digest what we witnessed on our morning drive! Absolutely insane!

At 15:00 we departed camp to just do a short drive and reflect on what we have seen over last few days, not expecting much, I mean how are we going to top what we already experienced?!?
Well mother nature was not done with us yet! In a stretch of 4km along the a river we got 3 leopard sightings, a lion on the road, another rhino, buffalo and elephant!! All of them top wuality sightings!! It was madness! And to top it off, a clan of hyenas crossed the road in front of us just before camp!

At dinner tonight we just sat in awe of what happened today!

Tomorrow we have a morning drive left and then off to the airport! There is no way we will top what we have seen, but that is ok! Tomorrow morning will just be to enjoy Kruger with the guests one last time before they head home! But who knows what the park has in store for us…

Here are some photos of our sightings today!

What a special sighting this morning of this Tusker!

From what I can gather, his name is “Nambu” which means “river” in Tsonga.

Its a cold and windy day here in Kruger and we
Decided this morning to treat our guests to a fantastic Bacon, Egg & Cheese on a Roosterkoek at Afsaal! They absolutely loved the freshly made roosterkoek!

Roosterkoek is bread dough that is cooked over an open fire! If you have never had a freshly made Roosterkoek, then definitely try it when visiting the park again! Afsaal and Thsokwane Picnic Spots make them from scratch every day!

Dinner at the Cattle Baron is always good!

Medium Rare Siloin Steak with a blackened pepper crust and salad!

The Kruger National Parks restaurants are very good! The food and service is excellent! On this trip we decided to do 1 traditional South African braai for our guests and the rest of the evenings we enjoy the fine cuisine the restaurants have to offer. All the restaurants also cater for vegetarians, vegans and most other dietaries, so there is something for everyone!

Bumke Family Trip Report
Day 4 of 6

Today we left from Satara to Skukuza, via Lower Sabie. The aim today was to see a bit more of the landscapes that the park has to offer. We went to Orpen Dam, Nkumbe Lookout & Mlondozi to admire the exquisite views over the park. That certainly didn’t mean we will not be enjoying the animals on the way! We started off with an incredible leopard sighting between Kumana and Mazithi dams, lots of elephants and general game, then we enjoyed a very delicious breakfast at Tsokwane!
Just as we were about to leave, someone told me about a male lion close to Siloweni and buffalo that were approaching him… off we went, full of anticipation of what may unfold… just to find the buffalo quite far off in the distance and him sleeping under a tree…
So we left him to snooze and went to Orpen dam where we were greated with playing hippos, loads of birds and some general game around the water, but the best was obviously the views!

On our way to Nkumbe lookout, we stopped at a small drainage line where we found a crocodile and a amzing bird, a green sandpiper!! Well our guests are not birders, so they didn’t really understand my fuss about the bird 🤣, the crocodile was more interesting for them! The rest of the drive to lower sabie was filled with stunning views and loads of general game, elephants and lots of big buffalo herds.

At Lower Sabie we took a little break to enjoy a cold drink on the deck and enjoy the elephants in the river. We left lower sabie and by now it was reaching boiling point. Luckily our drive was all along the sabie river and there were countless animals in the river! Just after Lubeylubey we found a pride of lions who just killed a buffalo, the rest of the herd was still standing on the other side watching! Incredible sighting although a bit difficult with the traffic and the location of the kill, but we managed to get some good views!

With a brief stop at Nkuhlu and a ice cream, we ended the day off with 2 male lions just before skukuza who made a half hearted attempt to show interest in the buffalo herd who came down to drink.

Another epic day in the park! Tomorrow we will be heading to a area to find some rhino!

We ended our day with a nice cold beer, a sunset and a mouth watering dinner at the Cattle Baron!

This morning started off with a bang!

We left Satara early and found this beaut of a male leopard in a Sausage tree where he has been feeding on his kill for the last 2 days.

Our timing couldn’t have been better! We just settled in and got the cameras ready when he decided it was time to get out of the wind and go higher up into the thick foliage and out of sight.

He was just north of the nwatsisonto loop on the tar just south of Kumana dam.

Day 3 of 6

Another epic day!

Today we split the day into a morning and afternoon game drive.

This morning we headed south of Satara and did the Sweni road towards Muzandzeni picnic spot. About 4 km down the sweni we found 2 male lions sleeping on an open clearing. As we arrived, one of them picked up his head. We sat there for a while just enjoying the peace and quiet. Then he started yawning and I knew they would get up soon. As luck would have it, they decided to walk directly towards us. Unfortunately the sun was directly behind them and made photography challenging, but what a moment! Having these two cross the road in front of us was absolutely epic! We continued towards the picnic spot to enjoy some coffee and rusks, little did we know we would be some great company! On our arrival, the picnic spot manager waved at me and pointed to the water hole… we couldn’t believe it! A huge pack of African Wild Dogs were playing around the waterhole! So there we were, making ourselves a lovely cup of coffee in the company of some wild dogs! After a while, 2 elephant bulls decided to pitch up and we were ready to capture some interaction, however the bulls took 1 look at the dogs and made a u-turn!
By now it was getting hot and we continued back to Satara for a lovely breakfast. Passing Nsemani dam, there was a lot of general game around so we decided to hang out there for some 20 minutes or so, to enjoy the sight. The dam levels are very low and there are pools filled with catfish, easy pickings for the crocs & birds.

After our breakfast at the Cattle Baron we took a bit of a rest during the heat of the day.

Our afternoon drive started a bit slow due to the heat, however we saw a lot of general game, elephants and buffalo. As the sun set, we approached camp, chatting about the plan for tomorrow, when we were surprised by a lioness and her two cubs walking down the road towards us! What a lovely end to another perfect day!

Bumke Family Trip Report
Day 2 of 6

What a day! Today we left Skukuza for Satara abd it definitely was a cat day! With a total of 5 good lion sightings and a leopard on a kill! After our drive we checked in at Satara in the newly renovated G circle which is on the perimeter and I treated our guests to a true South African Braai and Milktart for desert! They thoroughly enjoyed it!
Today we will split the day with a morning and afternoon drive so that our guests can get a rest during the heat of the day and also enjoy the pool here at Satara.
