Montagu's gravel roads and trails are just spectacular. It will keep you busy for days, weeks. In fact, it has kept me busy for 7 years, and I still haven't explored it all.

I love the light in this picture taken by 📸 during the epic steelbike event.

Eroica South Africa 2024 - A Timeless Adventure in Montagu ✨🚴‍♀️

What a ride! April brings one of my favourite events to Montagu. The town was abuzz with the spirit of Eroica. From the challenging ascent of the Ouberg pass to the delightful Hoek-Om rest stop, every moment was a pedal through history.

The views from the Klein Karoo plateau were worth every drop of sweat.

Montagu offers the perfect backdrop of quaint streets and historic charm. The gravel roads are endless and the views just spectacular.

Thank you for bringing this event to Montagu each year. Until next year, keep the vintage wheels turning!

What is the story of Hodges Bridge?

Hodges Bridge

Cogmanskloof pass that cuts through the Langeberg mountain range between Ashton and Montagu is the gateway to the Little Karoo.
Hodges Bridge marked the beginning of the construction of the historic pass that was started from the Ashton side of the mountain and would be completed by Thomas Bain. It was the only bridge through the kloof and formed an important part of the first section of the pass completed in 1872.
The official opening of this section of road and bridge in January 1872 by Frederick Hodges, Robertson magistrate and Divisional Council chairman, was a momentous occasion. Businesses in Montagu and Robertson were closed and the population of the two towns came to witness the grand event with a 30 horsemen guard of honour for Mr Hodges and his party. He rode through the kloof and on his return was presented with an address by the people of Montagu. Hodges Bridge was named in his honour as he was responsible for persuading the Cape government to fund the construction of the pass.
This original old bridge consisted of two separate “arches” as they were called. On the arch nearest to Ashton the motto “Unity is strength” was inscribed and on the other arch “Welcome to Montagu over the Hodges Bridge”.When the new pass was built ”Hortjiesbrug” – as it was also called - fell into disuse.
Over the years increasing traffic volumes led to a general upgrade of the road that included the construction of 3 new bridges. From the Ashton end the Boy Retief bridge crossed the river. The tall Loftus bridge spanned the river beneath the tunnel and the Voortrekker bridge crossed the river at the entrance of Montagu.

"Dankie vir die prachtige fietstocht door Montagu." - Hans Vonk

What a privilidge to host Hans Vonk on the Montagu Historical Town Tour on original Dutch bicycles. We had such a great time and what a great guy.

Hans Vonk represented South Africa’s national team Bafana Bafana for no less than eight years, covering two World Cups as the team’s goalkeeper. He was also a professional goalkeeper in The Netherlands which saw him shine during the glory years of sc Heerenveen. In his heyday Hans also played some successful seasons at Ajax Amsterdam.

After his professional sporting career Hans returned to South Africa. Today his mission is to share his love for the rainbow nation through creating tailor-made travel experiences in the most beautiful and inspiring destinations throughout the country he knows so well.
