Today is 🌊

The ocean covers more than 70 % of our planet and produces at least 50 % of the oxygen on earth. It is home to most of earth's biodiversity (around 80 %) and is also important to our economy because it provides many people with jobs.

Unfortunately, approximately 90 % of big fish populations are depleted, and around 50 % of coral reefs have already been destroyed. The human population is extracting more from the ocean than what can be replenished. It is, therefore, vitally important that we work together to create a balance with the ocean that no longer depletes the resources but instead restores our resources.

Today is WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 🌍

is both a global celebration and a platform for public outreach. This day encourages worldwide activism for the protection and conservation of our planet.

Unfortunately, the collection of resources extracted from the planet each year amounts to around 90 billion tonnes.

It is predicted that the world population will be too big to feed by 2050!

Furthermore, coral reefs are expected to be gone altogether by 2070!

We need to start taking care of our planet if we want to preserve an environmentally stable planet for future generations 🌿

Today is 🪸

Reefs provide food, shelter, and clean water. Additionally, reefs contribute to modern fishing and the medicinal industry.

Unfortunately, some of the most beneficial reefs have been diminishing because of:

🙃 Coral bleaching and ocean acidification (due to rising ocean temperatures)
🙃 Coral mining
🙃 Overfishing
🙃 Toxic pollution
🙃 The use of harmful sunscreens and other chemicals

On the 29th of May 2024, a Great White Shark (𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘰𝘯 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘴) necropsy confirmed Killer Whale (𝘖𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘢) predation in Cefane, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

The necropsy was conducted by Kevin Cole (East London Museum) in collaboration with Dr. Alison Towner (Rhodes University), and represents the first confirmed Killer Whale predation on a Great White Shark in the Eastern Cape.

The adult male shark (4.2m), whose stomach contained remnants of a freshly-consumed common dolphin, was found in the Nyara River Mouth and displayed injuries that were consistent with Killer Whale predation (liver missing, rake teeth marks).

This was the 14th confirmed attack on a Great White Shark by Killer Whales.

🐢 Hawksbill turtle (𝘌𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘮𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘺𝘴 𝘪𝘮𝘣𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘢) - CRITICALLY ENDANGERED

🐢 Leatherback turtle (𝘋𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘺𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘢) - VULNERABLE

🐢 Olive Ridley turtle (𝘓𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘥𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘺𝘴 𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘷𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘢) - VULNERABLE

🐢 Kemp's Ridley turtle (𝘓𝘦𝘱𝘪𝘥𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘺𝘴 𝘬𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘪𝘪) - CRITICALLY ENDANGERED

Today is WORLD ENDANGERED SPECIES DAY ‼️

is celebrated on the 3rd Friday of May each year. This day aims to bring awareness to species who are threatened with extinction. The IUCN Red List is a brilliant source that assists this aim.

Did you know that more than 44 000 species are threatened with extinction ⁉️

In particular, 37 % of all shark and ray species are threatened with extinction!

Let's use today to spread awareness for threatened species!

Today is WORLD MIGRATORY BIRD DAY...

and we are focusing on the sub-antarctic skua 🐦

The is a large seabird that breeds in the sub-antarctic and Antarctic regions. Every year, they move further north when not breeding. They primarily feed on fish, penguin chicks, other seabirds, and small mammals.

Today is WORLD PENGUIN DAY 🐧🐧🐧

is celebrated as an educational tool that encourages people to learn more about penguins and their environments. This day is also of importance because it allows people to focus on how important penguins are to our ecosystems (their disappearance will alter the occurrence and numbers of their predator and prey species) and also about the threats that penguins face.

Penguins are highly adapted to aquatic life with wings that are insulated and have evolved into flippers. They have excellent swimming capabilities, with most species being able to reach depths of 200 m. The different species also range greatly in their size, with 'little blue' penguins reaching a max height of 30 cm and emperor penguins reaching a max height of over 1 m!

Unfortunately, penguins suffer because of practices and . also affects species in the Antarctic!

Today is WORLD AQUATIC ANIMAL DAY 🐟🦀🪼🦞

is celebrated on the 3rd of April each year and aims to spread awareness about the vast array of aquatic animals on our planet. Creatures of both big and small use water (both saltwater and freshwater) for their homes, and each play their part in the ecosystem.

Today is WORLD WHALE DAY 🐋

is celebrated on the third Sunday in February every year.

For centuries, multiple species of whales have been hunted; mainly by the commercial whaling industry, for their meat, blubber, and oil. However, today, whales face even more challenges, including but not limited to pollution, and the loss of habitat as a result of human activities.

The smallest whale is the Dwarf S***m Whale (reaching a maximum length of between 2 m - 2.5 m), while the largest whale is the Blue Whale (reaching a maximum length of approximately 30 m).

World Whale Day raises awareness of the growing need to protect these diverse and majestic mammals. Let's play our part and spread the word 🐳

Today is WORLD WETLANDS DAY 🌍

is celebrated on the 2nd of February each year.

The aim of this day is to raise awareness and an understanding of what wetlands are, as well as how we can contribute towards restoring them.

A wetland can be defined as the transitional area between terrestrial and aquatic systems where the water table is either at or near the surface. Alternately, a wetland can be defined as land that is periodically flooded with shallow water such that it supports vegetation that it adapted to life in saturated soil 🌿

Examples of wetlands include:

💦 Swamps
💦 Lagoons
💦 Coral reefs
💦 Saltmarshes (mangroves)

Main reasons why wetlands are important:

🌿 They enhance biodiversity
🌿 They improve water supply
🌿 They store carbon (decreases the impacts of climate change)
🌿 They reduce flooding impacts
🌿 They enhance human well-being
🌿 They allow for the protection of agricultural resources (thereby also improving livelihoods)

Let's be a voice for these vital ecosystems.
