Today is SHARK AWARENESS DAY 🦈

is celebrated each year on the 14th of July. This day celebrates some of the world's most magnificent species, those who often have a bad reputation. The media has continually depicted sharks as dangerous, and this is an unrealistic narrative. Instead, these resilient predators are, in fact, more scared of humans than we are of them.

You are more likely to die by the following rather than being killed or "attacked" by a shark:

• Aeroplane accidents (283 people are killed per year)
• Being electrocuted by a toaster (800 people are killed per year)
• Car accidents (1.25 million people are killed per year)

Yet, ONLY 5 people are killed globally as a result of shark-related encounters each year.

Unfortunately, human fear and greed have meant that sharks are killed and then harvested for their meat and fins. This has resulted in many shark species making it onto the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

100 MILLION sharks are killed by HUMANS EACH YEAR!

Please use today to spread awareness of the plight faced by many shark (and ray) species, as well as the importance of their conservation 🙏🏻🦈

Today is 🌊

The ocean covers more than 70 % of our planet and produces at least 50 % of the oxygen on earth. It is home to most of earth's biodiversity (around 80 %) and is also important to our economy because it provides many people with jobs.

Unfortunately, approximately 90 % of big fish populations are depleted, and around 50 % of coral reefs have already been destroyed. The human population is extracting more from the ocean than what can be replenished. It is, therefore, vitally important that we work together to create a balance with the ocean that no longer depletes the resources but instead restores our resources.

Today (and every other day), you can help the ocean in the following ways:

🌊 Learn about the ocean

🌊 Teach others about the ocean

🌊 Only eat certified sustainable seafood

🌊 Stay informed about issues affecting the ocean

🌊 Stay informed about ways in which you can assist with ocean conservation

Today is WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY 🌍

is both a global celebration and a platform for public outreach. This day encourages worldwide activism for the protection and conservation of our planet.

Unfortunately, the collection of resources extracted from the planet each year amounts to around 90 billion tonnes.

It is predicted that the world population will be too big to feed by 2050!

Furthermore, coral reefs are expected to be gone altogether by 2070!

We need to start taking care of our planet if we want to preserve an environmentally stable planet for future generations 🌿

Today is 🪸

Reefs provide food, shelter, and clean water. Additionally, reefs contribute to modern fishing and the medicinal industry.

Unfortunately, some of the most beneficial reefs have been diminishing because of:

🙃 Coral bleaching and ocean acidification (due to rising ocean temperatures)
🙃 Coral mining
🙃 Overfishing
🙃 Toxic pollution
🙃 The use of harmful sunscreens and other chemicals

Let's work together to support and protect our global reef systems 🌍🪸

On the 29th of May 2024, a Great White Shark (𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘥𝘰𝘯 𝘤𝘢𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘴) necropsy confirmed Killer Whale (𝘖𝘳𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘶𝘴 𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘢) predation in Cefane, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

The necropsy was conducted by Kevin Cole (East London Museum) in collaboration with Dr. Alison Towner (Rhodes University), and represents the first confirmed Killer Whale predation on a Great White Shark in the Eastern Cape.

The adult male shark (4.2m), whose stomach contained remnants of a freshly-consumed common dolphin, was found in the Nyara River Mouth and displayed injuries that were consistent with Killer Whale predation (liver missing, rake teeth marks).

This was the 14th confirmed attack on a Great White Shark by Killer Whales.
