Soon after municipalities introduced beer halls, first in Natal in 1909, workers referred to the experience as “drinking in a cage”.
The bleak, brick structures sold tickets to drinkers, who moved through turnstiles to collect their cans of traditional beer.
“In the minds of white officialdom Africans are innately rural, therefore all that they are allowed to consume is traditional beer,” says Nieftagodien.
By 1942 there were 45 municipalities with beer halls in South Africa.

Tumahole is a township teeming with great craft talent. Tumahole is a township that is 15km away from the Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site, a 2 billion year old impact crater. It has crafters ranging from shoes, clothing, fine art and even jewelry making. Since the dawn of democracy a lot of factories baled and left a trail of despair and poverty in the township. A new day has dawned though, with the emergence of crafters who are challenging the status quo by telling their story through craft. In this Kasi Story we meet Masejake Molobeng a crafter with a big vision, specializing in beaded jewelry and wire jewelry. This is her Kasi Story
The PDT stage. The platform on which the PDT kasi concerts will take place at Tumahole Arts Market. An initiative to celebrate great, overlooked musicians and known live musicians who are at the forefront of great music. Bringing live music concerts to the township of Tumahole. On the first Line-up we saw Monsta G offering honest accounts of life through his eyes and reminding the audience that being authentic to Kasi is not a weakness but a strength few have the muscle to carry.
