Summer beckons and with it, the need to dust our feathers – or more appropriately in this case, beautify the town Square in Riebeek Kasteel, in the heart of the Riebeek Valley. Ashley Stone, owner of 1 Royal Street Guesthouse, led a group of volunteers to make this space a happy place. In the words of Luther Burbank: “Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food, and medicine for the soul.”

Rarely has one seen two people embrace life with such gusto. In their eighties, Liz and Rob, after a short holiday visit to the Riebeek Valley, sold up their farm in White River and settled in Riebeek Kasteel. A prolific painter, Liz immediately opened her home gallery to the public and regularly offers Sip ‘n Paint classes. She works with speed, often completing more than one painting a day – ‘I have no time to waste’, she winks. Rob saw an opportunity to start Probus, short for Professional and Business retirees, and hosts a meeting once a month. Now there is an example to follow! Liz McQueen Studio: 072 194 5343.

Friendly owners of Krematart Restaurant, Frik and Alida, new to Riebeek Valley, saw the need for hearty cuisine in Riebeek West. After a journey of being chefs themselves, they stepped up the game and brought an Internationally acclaimed chef on board. Krematart Restaurant is named after the majestic baobab tree that graces the adjacent atrium of the Riebeek Valley Garden Centre. It is characteristic of the Swartland to see owner-run enterprises and Kremetart is no exception. Did you know? Genl Jan Christaan Smuts, born on the farm Bovenplaas near Riebeek West, was a keen botanist. Until he went to school at the age of 12, Smuts lived the life of a farm boy, taking his share in the work of the farm, learning from nature, and developing a life-long love of the land. When asked by an American botanist why he, a general, should be an authority on grasses, Smuts replied, “But my dear lady, I am only a general in my spare time.” The Smuts Museum, situated on the PPC Cement Factory, is open to public on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 to 16:30.
