Surely, there can be nothing beyond those distant peaks... is that the end of the world?

No. There is more. Once you have driven through the Ngwangwane river valley and crossed the ridge at Kingscote, you will have entered East Griqualand and left the Umzimkulu river catchment behind. You are now in the headwaters of the Umzimvubu river, which spills into the Indian ocean a couple of hundred kilometers downstream, at Port St. Johns.

This picture is of Route 617, heading southwest from Underberg to Swartberg, Franklin, Kokstad and Matatiele. Probably one of the most remote and scenic routes in all of Africa.

The UHTFC Still Water Festival will commence from the 20th until the 22nd of September 2024.

The cost per team member is R1500 (R3000 per team). This includes fishing, snacks on Friday evening, lunch packs and supper on Saturday and lunch on Sunday.

20 Teams of 2 anglers will be fishing some of the finest still waters in and around the Underberg area.

Registration will be from 4pm on the 20th of September and prize giving will be held on the Sunday afternoon after lunch. The main venue will be held at the Polocrosse clubhouse at the Underberg Country Club.

It has now been 23 days since we opened entries for the DGT Run scheduled for the 14-19 Oct 2024. We require 20 teams in order for the event to go ahead.

At this point we have 4 teams confirmed.

There are just over 2,500 people following the DGT Run FB page and just under 1000 following on the Instagram account. As mentioned in our post on the 30th January, we would like to get an understanding from you, the runners, as to what the barriers / fears are to entering, in order to assist in removing these.

We know there are a lot of people interested and who list this event as a “bucket list” event. There has been only one comment posted. Please let us know what is “holding you back” from signing up.

The DGT is tough, but it is actually a lot more achievable than you think!

RUN, RIDE, PADDLE OR PARTY?

What are you going to be doing in Underberg on January 27th & 28th?

The Drak Adventure weekend at the end of January offers something for almost every active person in the family, with options for a trail run, mountain bike event and canoe race, as well as a quality music festival for anybody looking for some extra after-hours action.

The sporting weekend includes the Euro Steel Run the Rivers trail run; Euro Steel Drak Descent mountain bike race; and N3TC Drak Challenge canoe race. All three events are held over two days with the trail run and MTB offering shorter events for those who are looking for a less ambitious challenge.

On Saturday night, Hayden Rattray; the Black Wiskey Band; and Matt Davis x Tim Lewis will be providing the entertainment at the Flying Fish Drak Party at Underberg Country Club.

N3TC DRAK CHALLENGE LOOMING

Just over three weeks until one of the biggest events on the SA Canoeing calendar, the 2024 N3TC Drak Challenge on January 27-28 in Underberg.

In 2023 the Drak Challenge was the biggest event of the year and the 2024 event is looking to be even better. Good, soaking rains in the catchment are means the river is flowing strongly and last month's KZN MD Champs and the Fast Drak both provided paddlers with ideal conditions.
