Listen to the birds around you, understand what they are telling you and you shall see.

This African Paradise Flycatcher together with some Blue Waxbill, Dark-capped Bulbul and White-browed Robin-chat were calling for a while from a nearby thicket.

It's midday and hot, this is usually the quiet time. So I went to have a closer look.

Et voilà! A Large Spotted Genet in the upper part of the thicket.

Nature is amazing. The trees are in our yard at Kalahari Sand Ridge Inn. Where do these trees get the strength from to blossom in this dryness and heat?

The yellow flowering tree is a Peeling Plane / Ochna pulchra. It commonly grows on sand dunes of the Northern Kalahari. The oil from the berries can be used to make soap.

The reddish flowering tree is a Flamboyant Tree / Royal poinciana. It's native to Madagascar. It is used in many cases such as cure for diarrhea, baldness and hair loss, menstrual cramp, leucorrhoea, piles, gout pain, scorpion poison, etc.
The Flamboyant has medicinal properties like antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antimalarial, antimicrobial, antioxidant, cardio-protective, gastro protective, and wound healing activity. It's leaves have anti diabetic properties, using its methanol extract significantly lowers the blood glucose levels. The wood is used for fuels, its flowers are used in producing bee forage. Flamboyant Trees produces a thick water-soluble gum which is then used as a binding agent in manufacturing tablets and also in textile industries.
