Zambia is a beautiful country and at Streetwise, in making different Maps of Zambia, cities and towns, we would like to promote domestic tourism. For the next few posts we will look at snippets of Northern Zambia . We will start with my experience in Mpulungu
***********************************************************************
So here I was in the middle of Lake Tanganyika, kayaking. Me, who can’t swim in a baby pool, let alone in the middle of one of the largest lakes in Africa. My friend, Ann, had convinced me it was a good idea.
In the spirit of adventure, I got in the kayak and followed her instructions, and to my amazement, I managed and thoroughly enjoyed myself. It was so exhilarating.
This was Mpulungu, right at the Northern tip of my country, Zambia. We had arrived just as the sun was setting, in time to catch a boat across the lake to Isanga Bay Lodge.
We were met by staff, who led us into a rickety looking boat after they had safely put on our life jackets.
We saw fishermen in banana boats catching fish on the lake. Then there was a boat, where I saw one of the fishermen had a task of emptying water from their boat using a small dish. Apparently, the boat had a small leak, but fishing must go on.
By the time we docked at the lodge bay, it was dark. We were led into a bushy path using solar lamps, as there is no electricity here. We finally emerged into a nice reception and dining area where we were met by the friendly owners.
We went to our rooms after, which were thatched huts that stood on stilts. I fell asleep immediately. I woke up to the most beautiful sound of waves.
Stepping out of the room, the sight took my breath away. This was Lake Tanganyika. It’s a beautiful place. There was a sandy beach with palm trees. And that it is how my kayaking journey began.
I was also enjoyed having conversations with the fishermen, who fished where we had docked the previous night. I bought some fish straight from the lake. That was our supper.
It is such a refreshing place and I would go back again a thousand times.
