Guide in the spotlight - Stephen Banda, Safari Guide

"Stephen was not only an exceptionally gifted guide, able to read the wilderness in a way that was astounding, but he was also great company.

He has lived in the area his whole life, making it possible for Stephen to truly bring the bush alive. There is a warmth and authenticity to the guiding here is like nowhere else; it is the Zambian people who give these safaris their unique flavour. "

The Tafika Fund is something that Carol and John Coppinger set up in 1998 to give back to the Remote communities we work closely with in our Remote areas, to provide opportunities for growth.

The Fund has grown from strength to strength, having supported an incredible number of individuals directly over the years, with the annual contribution to the fund sitting at around $65 000.

This money is raised through generous guest donations, bed-night contributions from tourism occupancy and additional support from RAS, ensuring there is continuity of support year on year.

Recently, the Fund unlocked a tax-deductible donation option for American guests through Generosity In Action.

Jen has taken over management of the Fund and all of its dependents, and is bringing very exciting new ideas to the table.

At a glance, in the Fund supports the following annually:
8-10 college students
12-15 scholarships
A medical clinic assistant
250 football players, coaches and assistants (50% female)
School teachers and classroom supplies
Ladies empowerment club
Village vegetable gardens
A community beehive project
Children's conservation education

Olimba and her female cub have provided countless hours of exceptional game viewing and photographic opportunities for guests at Tafika Camp this year.

It was no surprise then that our last drive for 2021, as well as our 28 staff members who went on a night drive to enjoy the wildlife got to watch mother and cub interact.

From finding the mother high up in a mahogany tree and calling into the wilderness, to watching them reunite in loving embrace and lastly watching them walk off in the sunset.. pausing every few meters to play.

Stay strong and healthy until next season.

Well done to our exceptional staff for another year of safaris at Remote Africa.

And another warm round of applause to our actors and actresses in the valley -πŸ¦πŸŠπŸ†πŸ’πŸƒπŸΈπŸπŸ¦“πŸ˜πŸ¦πŸ€πŸΎπŸ¦‰πŸ¦ŽπŸ¦—πŸͺ²for providing us all with such special entertainment again in 2021.

November is a special time of year for a number of reasons. Game viewing can be spectacular, and it has been. It's also a time of closing, cooling, rain, regrowth and life.

After the first few showers the Luangwa's vegetation is coming to life. The sweet smell of the leadwood blossoms and the budding of new leaves throughout.

Many animal species time the arrival of their next generations to coincide with this cooler, more lush and food abundant time of year. Most notably impala calves represent the coming of the rains.

Elephants don't have a seasonality to their breeding. We just had the fortune of coming across this female and very freshly born calf early one morning at Tafika. Later on in our afternoon drive we picked them up again along the riverside in the setting Luangwa sun. The calf was still very wobbly on its feet and extremely dependent on the mother to guide it and feed it at regular intervals.

Slow down. Take it in. Enjoy a safari at nature's pace.

The Milyoti wild dog pack in South Luangwa's Nsefu Sector have provided great game viewing for a number of visitors to this sector of the park this season.

Many people will know that buffalo are way beyond the fighting weight of wild dogs. But recently the Lower Zambezi's impressive Jeki Pack was seen taking down and feeding on adult buffalo on a number of separate occasions (go have a look at and ).

A few days ago, Tafika guide Mukupa Ben Zulu and his guests had some great moments watching the milyoti pack of 13 dogs (6 adults, 7 pups). On this afternoon the cheeky pups chased a fully grown Buffalo for some distance before it got into combretum thicket and they gave up.

Wild Dogs are only one of the focus species of the impressive work done by

The sun is setting on the 2021 safari season at Remote Africa Safaris.

This hippo couldn't help stepping in to photo-bomb this shot of carmine bee eaters with the Kate afternoon sun on them.

Shoebill, Takwela and Mwaleshi are wrapped up for the season, and Stephen is busy with the last safari at Chikoko.

A few more weeks at Tafika before the wet green curtain closes on the valley and wipes the slate clean until 2022.

Jackpot game drive at Tafika

Last night our expert guides provided more spectacular game viewing at Tafika Camp.

Apart from boasting a 100% leopard sightings rate for this year to date, one particular drive last night offered game viewing out of the top drawer.

It's the time of year where lions park themselves along the banks of the Luangwa, lying in wait for the weak Buffalo and hippos to be caught off guard.

As a result they are seen frequently but noth game drives and walking safaris.

Luangwa's Northern Nsefu Sector is home to the expansive Mutanda Plain.

This vast open area connects the game rich Luangwa riverside from the oasis that is the Chichele salt pan. Wildlife can be seen moving between these two contrasting areas during the drier months.

During the wet months, this is an impassable quagmire. The seasonal contrast is staggering.

For the next 5 weeks we will enjoy accessing this unique area from Tafika Camp.

Tafika Camp guide Mukupa Zulu and his guests recently had a fantastic experience watching a fishing party.

On this occasion the party consisted mainly of marabou storks and pelicans.

"It was my favourite moment of this safari - watching these pelicans which had eaten so much that they were unable to take off and fly."

Some of the over-full and muddy pelicans waddled to the river to rinse off the mud and let the food settle before taking flight again.

Great photos Mukupa πŸ™Œ

When slowing down on safari you very often get more than you bargain for by immersing yourself in nature.

On this afternoon at the Tafika carmine hide, visitors were spoilt to have this mother and daughter elephant walk behind the hide in a glowing sunset, through the carmines on the beach and up a shoot between the nests onto the bank above.

Slow down.
Take it in.
Enjoy your safari at nature's pace.

Animal interactions make sightings.

Our guests have been spoilt with some exceptional sightings in the past few weeks - as should be expected at this time of year!

One of our favourite things to do is to slow down and take in the interactions between individuals within the same species, as well as between species.

From a family legacy of leopard, to the harsh call of a pair of lilac-breasted rollers and the tapping and low rumble as bull elephants test each other.

Come and join us on a safari at nature's pace.

This new group of males has been spending a lot of time around Tafika lately πŸ™Œ and on an afternoon drive via the carmine Colony, guests were unable to access the canoe to get to the carmine hide...

One male was enjoying the breeze on the bank, while another brother was lying down near the canoe in some damp river sand to keep cool.

Things are hotting up more every day in the Luangwa.

It's a great time of year to see leopard up trees catching a break from the heat.

This beautiful young leopard was spotted on the way to our carmine bee eater hide at Tafika Camp, just 2minutes into the drive.

Cats don't mind a little water once in a while.. especially with the temperature having shot up.

Yesterday morning two males walked in between the accommodation at Tafika Camp. Nick got in a vehicle and followed them to see where they may bed down for the day and watched them keep going across the beach down to the water.

They slowly worked their way through the first bit of the crossing, and after the bigger brother glanced back at the distant beach behind him, realized he was committed - and entering the deeper stretch of water. They launched themselves forward and quickly swam the deep stretch the get to the other bank.

On reaching the opposite bank, the third brother (who's been mating with a River Pride female across the river at ) came out of the treeline to greet the others.

The very same day, the boys came straight back across to Tafika in the afternoon, settling back near the carmine Colony.
