"Den Laman" in the local language of Bonaire (Papiamentu) means โ€˜at the beachโ€™. Balloonfish Bonaire is nestled on the top floor of the Den Laman Condominiums and is located near several shore dive sites. It also has its own beautiful house reef (Bari Reef). This intimate complex is also home to a diving center (Dive Friends) and a brand-new pier (just completed in July 2022)! The pier includes new

STCB staff is going to swim around Klein Bonaire to raise $11,000 for sea turtle research in Lac Bay. Find the fundraiser here: https://gofund.me/99a426d9

At the end of July, our Field team โ€“ Field Coordinator Daan and Intern Extraordinaire Kate โ€“ will swim a full circle around Klein Bonaire (a whopping 11km!) to raise funds for sea turtle research in Lac Bay. Why? Well, we are in desperate need of two new research nets.

Lac Bay โ€“ with its beautiful seagrass meadows โ€“ is actually Bonaireโ€™s most important foraging ground for green sea turtles. In fact, research by Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire (STCB) over the past twenty years has shown that turtles in Lac Bay grow significantly faster than turtles on the west coast of our island. Andโ€ฆ faster growth rates allow sea turtles to reach adulthood at an earlier age, meaning they can start having babies in their twenties instead of their thirties โ€“ good news!

That said, we do notice that growth rates have been decreasing slightly in the bay. This may be caused by a number of factors, such as invasive seagrass, poor water quality and diseases; or other factors that we have yet to discover. To continue to collect data, to monitor the situation and to learn more about those potential factors affecting the growth rates of sea turtles in Lac, we need new material. The research net that we currently use to capture sea turtles is in desperate need of retirement.

So, please support our crowdfunding by making a donation and/or by sharing our โ€˜11K for the turtles in Lac Bayโ€™ campaign (https://gofund.me/99a426d9) with all of your family and friends! Thank you!

Since today is hawksbill day, we would like to put a spotlight on the biggest threat for the hawksbill turtle: turtleshell trade. In the last 150 years, approximately 9 million turtles were slaughtered for their carapaces (that is over 60,000 turtles each year!).

Hawksbills have a beautiful carapace that gives them the chance to camouflage well on the reef. However, this beautiful shell is also the reason they are now critically endangered. Hawksbill turtles are mostly captured to turn their carapaces in jewelry like rings, bracelets, or necklaces as well as glass frames.

Please make sure to never purchase any items that are made from turtle carapaces to stop promoting turtle souvenirs.

Yellow Goatfish have two whisker-like sensory barbels on their chin that resemble a goatee (hence the name) and are used to dig into, or probe, the sand or poke into holes in reefs to detect prey. Goatfish typically consume worms, mollusks, crustaceans and other small invertebrates. They usually feed on smaller fish, hunting in a school during the day, and alone at night. They always look so busy and typically attract opportunistic friends who find food in their wake!
